At substations of Shinkansen, three-phase power received from the utility power system is converted into a pair of single phase power sources with different phases. When a Shinkansen car passes the boundary of two power sources with different phases, the power source for Shinkansen instantly switches from one to the other. Vacuum switches have been used as changeover switches so far. It takes about 300 msec for switching. By this system, Shinkansen cars can pass the boundary of two power sources under powering.Generally speaking, when a vacuum switch is closed at a voltage-phase of 90°, the inrush current into transformer will become small. On the other hand, although the power from substation is not supplied to Shinkansen at no-voltage of power source switching at the changeover section, counter electromotive force by auxiliary motor appears on the main transformer on the car. Due to the counter electromotive force, it is difficult to suppress the inrush current into the main transformer by the conventional vacuum switch. In contrast, the use of static switch such as semiconductor device can decrease the exciting inrush current into the transformer of Shinkansen car, when the turn-on timing of changeover switch is controlled. We investigated the control method for suppressing the exciting inrush current into transformer when a static switch is used as a changeover switch instead of vacuum switch. To verify the control method, we built and tested a mini model to simulate a changeover switch.

Optimal linear feedback controller synthesis methodologies have the potential to become a worthy alternative to standard design methodologies, particularly for high-end complex systems. Although these design methodologies have been around for more than two decades, the majority of industrial control engineers are still reluctant to adopt this new design paradigm. Motivated by these observations, the MECO Research Team at KU Leuven is developing a Linear Control Toolbox (LCToolbox). LCToolbox is an open-source ᴍᴀᴛʟᴀʙ toolbox providing a high level of abstraction to apply linear optimal controller design methods. Its key features are the signal-based modeling framework that allows the user to construct the control configuration, the identification module that interfaces several routines in a uniform manner, and the control module that allows the user to specify an optimal feedback controller design problem in an intuitive way and solve it as such. Moreover, LCToolbox supports state-of-the-art B-spline-based linear parameter-varying (LPV) modeling and controller design techniques, unlocking the true potential of advanced feedback controller synthesis methodologies. The design of an LPV controller for an overhead crane is used as a running example throughout the paper to illustrate all features of LCToolbox.

This work discusses the feasibility of series/parallel switching circuits with power MOSFETs to minimize the reduction in the output power of photovoltaic power systems due to the partial shading problems by connecting shaded panels and adjacent panels in parallel. The following observations were made on the basis of the experimental results: 1) When at least one of the photovoltaic panels is shaded, 50% of the reduction ratio of the solar radiation intensity becomes the lower limit of the threshold value for the series/parallel switching control. 2) The effect of the series/parallel switching control can be expected to be higher when more than two of the photovoltaic panels are shaded. However, the sum of the solar radiation intensities applied to the panels in the parallel circuit should be less than 150% of the maximum intensity of the photovoltaic power system. 3) The shaded panel, which should be connected to the adjacent panel in parallel, can be detected using bypass current measurements rather than direct measurements of the solar radiation intensity. The authors developed a prototype of a switching circuit module and performed the operation tests by using three photovoltaic panels. The results showed that the switching circuit module successfully detects the partial shading conditions and switches from the series operation mode to the parallel operation mode.

The resonant DC link invertors have been developed these years for avoiding the switching loss of the conventional multi-pulse PWM invertors. This paper proposes a three phase VVVF power invertor using resonant pulse density modulation for induction motor speed-control. The invertor is composed of a cascade connection of a resonant DC-DC convertor and a multi-pulse PWM invertor. The output waveform depends on the gate pulse patterns of the invertor valves. This paper proposes three kinds of pulse patterns for obtaining the outputs of trapezoidal waveform and of sinusoidal waveform, and describes also the experimental results. The V/f characteristics for induction motor speed-control and the regenerative braking operation will be examined and the circuit behaviors will be discussed.

Analysis of NOx removal by a discharge plasma is made with an equivalent circuit. The used NOx reduction system consists of a neon transformer and a plasma reactor based on a dielectric barrier discharge. Impedance of the neon transformer has been determined experimentally, The equivalent circuit based on a series connection of two capacitors is used for the plasma reactor. The capacitances are obtained from experimental V-Q Lissajous diagram. Comparison with experimental data of consumed energy and the dependence of NO removal on gap length is successfully done.

This paper presents a new vector control for induction motor drives in full block mode, so called One-Pulse mode, of inverters. For traction drives the inverter usually operates in this mode in a high speed region. The amplitude of voltage vector is restricted constant in the mode. The conventional vector control is not applicable as it requires controllability of both the amplitude and the phase of the voltage vector for all time. The proposed scheme provides quick torque response even in the One-Pulse mode. Experimental results are shown to validate the effectiveness of the control.

Recently, we are concerned with security because picking and imitation on computer network are increasing. Then, the approach to individual identification from biometric is expected, because it can realize high reliability and it's a natural method. This paper's proposition is to construct individual identification system with the facial skin thermogram (FST) which is robust about illumination condition. FST has no shadow with illumination because it catches infrared rays light and makes an image. Then, we extract individual feature from FST by image processing and examine evaluation method to identify individual. However, facial skin temperature is ruled by autonomous nerve system. Especially, nasal skin temperature is affected by a mental influence like stress and arousal level. And we limited identification object to the measurement of face image in the rest state. We applied two dimensional discrete fourier transform (2DDFT) as a method of extracting individual feature, because we tried to convert the individual feature of FST into spatial frequency feature. Afterwards, we identified individual by pattern matching. Identification experiment was done in 30 registered patterns and 200 input patterns, consequently correct acceptance rate 91.0[%] and correct rejection rate 91.0[%] was able to be obtained. Moreover, we confirmed individual feature appeared in low frequency element of FST.

A digitized phase sensitive detecting system(DPD)have been developed for precision measurement of voltage ratio. The system is composed of a personal computer, an analog-to-digital converter(ADC)and a software for mesurement and data treatment. Two sinusoidal voltages of a frequency applied to the DPD are converted into discrete data, and expressed as vectors by data treatment following to the principle of usual phase sensitive detector. Then an amplitude ratio and a phase difference of the two input voltages are calculated. Estimeted uncertainties of measured values by the DPD are less than 0.008[%]for amplitude ratio and 0.05 [mrad] for any phase difference at frequency of 50[Hz].The errors of the DPD caused by harmonic distortion of the applied voltages and asynchronus sampling by the ADC are also examined using a two-phase voltage source.

Recently the wind power generation has attracted special interest and many wind power stations are being in service in the world. In the wind power stations, induction machines are mostly used as a generator. Since induction machines can become unstable during a fault in power system, like a step-out of synchronous machines, it is important to analyze the stability of power system including wind generators. This paper presents a consideration on the stability of induction generators from a point of view of voltage stability.

In conventional bill money recognition machines, we develop the recognition algorithm according to the transaction speed and diffierence of various specifications. However, development of the algorithm for the recognition has been based on the trial and error method. Many researchers have reported that neural networks are suitable for pattern recognition because of the ability of selforganization, parallel processing, and generalization. In this paper, we present a new bill money recognition method with neural network and show the effectiveness of the present algorithm compared with the conventional method by discrimination functions. Furthermore, we transform bill money data by FFT into frequency domain to reduce influence of the noise due to conveyed fluctuation. Then we adopt these Fourier coefficients or its amplitudes as input of the neural network. We show that the ability of recognition can be evaluated in detail by introducing a new measure of reliability.

The paper descries a novel method to extract line segments and circular arcs from the image taken by CCD camera for object recognition. Model based matching is one of the widely used techniques of the object recognition in computer vision, and the position and orientation of the objects are decided with referring the extracted line segments and circular arcs. For the precise and stable decisions of the position and orientation, the accurate extractions of characters are required. These characters are. fast and accurately extracted in the proposed method, while its validity is confirmed in some experiments.

Synchronous switching controller (SSC) for gas circuit breakers (GCB) has been developed. SSC is able to close and open a GCB at the appropriate point on wave for minimizing the switching surges. This paper proposes the new synchronous switching algorithm to minimize the control delay time, and the control error for the desired point on wave. New algorithm for (1) detecting voltage and current zero crossing points and (2) predicting the next operation time of GCB is introduced. 145kV GCB with SSC built in new algorithm has been tested several condition. SSC performed well from-30 degrees C to 60 degrees C at various control voltage condition and the standard deviation from the taget phase is within 0.5msec. And the closing at two target points with voltage zero and peak works well in a capacitive load circuit at 145kV.
