Recently, much attention has been focused on the syntesis of dehydrooligopeptides (DHP), containing one or more α-dehydroamino acid (DHA) residues, and the correlation between the structure and the bioactivity of DHP. This article is intended to give a brief review of synthetic methods of penems, ranging from Woodward's first penem synthesis to the most recent penem synthesis appearing in current papers. The antibacterial in vitro activities of a variety of penem derivatives are also described, together with structure-activity relationships of penems prepared in our laboratories.

Recently much attention has been focussed on ene reactions, and their synthetic utility has been increased because of their high regio- and stereospecificity. Ene reaction is based on addition of a compound with electron-deficient multiple bond (an enophile) to an olefin possessing an allylic hydrogen (an ene).Intermolecular ene reactions are classified by functional groups in enophiles. The differences between thermal reactions and Lewis acid catalyzed ones are discussed.Intramolecular ene reactions including metallo-ene systems are reviewd according to the classification (Type I- III) reported by Oppolzer.

This account describes the CD exciton chirality method which is useful for determination of absolute stereochemistry of various natural and synthetic chiral compounds. Chiral exciton coupling between two or more chromophores gives rise to two split CD Cotton effects of opposite signs to each other, from the signs of which absolute configuration of chiral compounds is nonempirically determined, if the direction of transition moments in interacting chromophores is known.Applications of this versatile chiroptical method to various organic compounds are exemplified ; in Part II, chiral exciton interaction between different chromophores are discussed.

Technology for a continuous ethanol fermentation process was developed by means of immobilized living cells using yeast cells and specially designed artificial resins.Yeast which has the ability to produce ethanol was screened from Saccharomyces genus and mixed with prepolymers of photocrosslinkable resin, then illuminated with an active ray (for example, chemical lamp) to change the prepolymers into three dimensional cross-linked polymers in which yeast was entrapped. Immobilized yeast processed into appropriate thinner sheet was packed in a fermentor and a diluted molasses solution fed to the fermentor. The fermentation temperature was kept at about 30-32°C and the pH at 4-5.As a result of a bench scale test (10 litres of ethanol a day) and pilot plant test (250 litres of ethanol a day), the constant activity of the yeast and high ethanol yield on sugar during long-term operation was confirmed and it was also established that the ethanol productivity was several times that of conventional suspended state batch system fermentation.

A variety of 3, 4-dihydroisocoumarins (3, 4-DHI) naturally occur as constituents of plant or as metabolites of fungus or bacteria. Most of them have been found to have various important biological activities. This article summerizes our study on the syntheses, reactions, and biological activities of 3, 4-DHI and isochromans along with a review of recent progress in this field.

Withanolide, a group of naturally occuring C28 steroidal lactone isolated from the plants of Solanaceae family, has been paid attention for their biological activity, e. g. antitumor and insect antifeedant. The syntheses of jaborosalactones, withaferin A and other several withanolides were achieved. The key steps in the synthesis involve introduction of the desired substituent at C-25 and stereoselective construction of the A/B rings by a facile allyl sulfoxide-sulfenate rearrangement. The biological activities and neighbouring group effects of the A/B ring are also described.

The purpose of the present research is to establish new methods in the commercial production of cyclopentenones. Cyclopentenones are very important compounds for fine chemical industry. (agrochemicals, perfumes, pharmaceuticals)The present paper is concerned with syntheses of cyclopentenones through a molecular rearrangement of 2-furylcalbinols, which was discovered by G. Piancatelli. On this reaction, several improvements are achieved from the industrial viewpoints. This article describes carbon-carbon bond forming reactions utilizing trialkylsiloxy substituted heterocyclic aromatic compounds and their synthetic applications. Siloxyfurans synthesized from buten-4-olides or succinic anhydrides reacted with dienophiles to give corresponding Diels-Alder adducts. In the presence of Lewis acids they also reacted with orthoesters, acetals, α, β-unsaturated ketones, aldehydes, and ketones to give corresponding buten-4-olide derivatives or bislactones.Similar reactions of siloxyoxazoles synthesized from 2-oxazolin-5-ones are also described.

The reaction of γ, δ- or δ, ε-unsaturated carboxylic acid with halogen afford halolactone in high yield. This halolactonization reaction generally proceeds in a high stereo- and regiospecific manner. This makes the reaction one of the most important procedures for the functionalization of the carbon-carbon double bond.This review provides illustrative examples of the synthesis of natural products where halolactonization reaction plays an important role.Some related reactions are also described.

Directed metalation has recently been recognized as an efficient new synthetic methodology for the regiospecific construction of highly substituted aromatic systems. In this review, the utility of the directed metalation strategy for the synthesis of a variety of complex aromatic compounds, especially natural products, is described.

Nitrones are well-known to behave as 1, 3-dipoles and readily undergo thermal [3+2] cycloaddition reactions with olefins to produce isoxazolidine derivatives, which can be converted into β-amino alcohols by subsequent reductive N-O bond cleavage. The synthetically significant features of these reactions are carbon-carbon bond formation and introduction of nitrogen and oxygen functionality with concomitant high siteselectivities, regioselectivities, and stereoselectivities. Although this reaction mode has been alloted a more limited role in organic synthesis, more recent studies have demonstrated its general utility in the synthesis of a wide variety of natural products, particularly alkaloids. It is the purpose of this review to indicate the usefulness and synthetic aspects of nitrone methodology applicable to the natural products synthesis.

Following reactions of various allylic compounds catalyzed by palladium-phosphine complexes are surveyed. Allyl carbonates react with nucleophiles under neutral conditions at room temperature. Allyl alkenyl carbonates and allyl β-keto esters undergo decarboxylation and regioselective intramolecular allylation to afford allylated ketones. 1, 3-Dienemonoxides react with nucleophiles to give 1, 4-adduct with high selectivity. Palladium-catalyzed cyclization of methyl (E) - 3-oxo-8-phenoxy-6-octenoate gives 3-vinylcyclopentanone-2-carboxylate, which is useful starting material for steroids and jasmonate syntheses. Allyl alkenyl carbonates and allyl β-keto esters are converted to α, β-unsaturated ketones by decarboxylative dehydrogenation in acetonitrile using diphosphine. Allylic compounds are converted to mainly 1-olefins by hydrogenolysis with formates. Allyl carbonates are carbonylated under mild conditions to give β, γ-unsaturated esters. Conjugated dienes are formed from allylic compounds by palladium- catalyzed elimination reaction.

Various organic compounds for conventional color photography by chromogenic development are reviewed.Compounds concerned with the dynamic processes of color development, i.e., color forming coupler, colored coupler, development inhibitor releasing (DIR) compounds and quinone-diimine scavenger, and with the static properties of color image such as hue and dye stability, are briefly described.

Three types of Rh (I) hydridotrialkylphosphine compounds, trans-RhH(N2) L2(L=P(t-Bu)3, PPh(t-Bu)2, PCy3, P(i-Pr)3), Rh2H2(μ-N2)L4(L=PCy3, P(i-Pr)3), and RhHLn(n=3, L=P (i-Pr)3, PEt3 ; n=4, L=PEt3), were prepared by reducing RhCl3·3 H2O with Na/Hg in THF. They were proved to be extremely strong nucleophiles and serve as efficient catalysts for hydrogenation of nitriles, ketones, and alkynes, and H-D exchange reaction of H2 and H-C(sp2, sp3)bond with D20 through activation of H2 and water, respectively. They also catalyze the hydrogenation of carbonyl and nitro compounds with H2O-CO and the hydroformylation of olefins with formaldehyde.
