Butadiene and isoprene are important raw materials for synthetic rubbers, resins and other products.Nippon Zeon developed unique processes to recover high quality butadiene and isoprene monomer respectively by extractive distillation using non aqueous dimethylformamide as selective solvent with a special polymerization inhibitor from C4 stream and C5 stream, respectively (GPB and GPI process).The characteristics of these processes are quite low energy consumption, high recovery rate, high product quality, no environmental problem, easy operation and maintenace-free processes.GPB process has been licensed all over the world and more than thirty plants are now under construction or operation. Recently, attention is being focused on the solvent conversion in existing plants for energy saving and operation improvement.GPI process has no chemical treatment which seems necessary in other processes, and other useful C5 components such as dicyclopentadiene and pentadienes can be easily recovered with additional equipment. These components can be used for various new products in synthetic rubber, resin and fine chemicals industries.

Behaviors of metal enzymes, especially of Fe-porphyrin ones are considered from the quantum-biological view point. In the introductory section, historical background of quantum biology and the inevitable role ought to be played by quantum biology in studying the enzyme reaction mechanism are described, in the light of the splendid success of quantum chemistry in explaining organic reaction mechanism.In Section 2, the physical and chemical properties of the porphin and Fe-porphyrins are explained on the basis of the electronic structures of these molecules, placing special emphasis on the HOMO and LUMO and also in relation to the interaction between the molecular orbitals of Fe and porphin.In Section 3, reaction mechanism of cytochrome P-450 is discussed. By comparing the transition energies and oscilaltor strengths calculated by means of the P-P-P method with the observed optical data, the stacked models are proposed as the plausible spacial orientation between P-450 and the substrates.

Two types of reactions with organomanganese have been examined. The first is a reaction of manganate reagents with carbon-carbon multiple bond. Catalytic version of these reactions is also disclosed. The second is a reaction of gem-dibromo compounds such as gem-dibromocyclopropane and dibromomethyltrialkylsilane with trialkylmanganate (II). The reaction was initiated by bromine-manganese exchange.

Various organic compounds containing SH and/or SS are found in organisms, and are playing important roles to maintain life. In this review, the nature of the groups and their reactions of biological importance are described surrounding following topics : evolution of hydrogen sulfide from boiled egg, disulfide interchange, stereostructure of disulfide group, thioester linkage and its biological significance, role of acyl carrier protein, and metallothionein.

Innovative carbon radical generation from hydrocarbons through a catalytic process under mild conditions has been achieved by the use of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) as a catalyst. This method can be successfully applied to a wide variety of functionalizations of hydrocarbons. Thus, alkanes are converted into alcohols, ketones, carboxylic acids, nitro alkanes and alkyl sulfonic acids through alkyl radicals generated by the action of NHPI. Hydroxysilylation was first performed by the addition of hydrosilanes and oxygen to alkenes bearing electron-withdrawing substituents. A new approach to oxyalkylation based on the concomitant addition of carbon radicals derived from alkanes or alcohols and molecular oxygen to alkenes or alkynes has been described.

In the previous paper, the products from formaldehyde by the Bucherer-Bergs synthesis was reported.In this paper, studies on the reaction about the effects of the reaction compositions and conditions was reported.Reaction of glycolonitrile and ammonium bicarbonate was studied and the result resembled to that of formaldehyde. When the mixture was refluxed with mineral acid, hydantoin was obtained in a 82% yield.In the case of formaldehyde the reaction temperature was elevated to give a rather higher yield of glycine. But the yield of glycine was at most 69% by direct heating at 170°C.It was considered that the driving force of the hydrolysis reaction stemmed from sodium carbonate, the equilibrium of the reaction had to be changed by the removal of the formed carbon dioxide. By this means, glycine was prepared in 86% yield which was as good as ordinary one using 2 moles of sodium hydroxide.

The review describes about the compounds which can enhance the generation of superoxide (O2-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the biological systems and about the novel metal complexes which can have superoxide dismutase activity in vivo. Some compounds are readily reduced by one or two electron (s) to produce their reduced forms. When these reduced forms can react with dioxygen, the compounds often have the potential to increase the production (s) of O2- and/or H2O2 in living cells. The review shows that hypervalent heteropentalenes, 3, 4-diaza-1, 6, 6 a-trithiapentalenes (TTP) and 1, 6-dioxa-6 a-thia-2, 5-diazapentalenes (HEP), are capable of this in studies with electrochemical reactions and Escherichia coli, respectively The hypervalent structures may be essential for enhancement of O2- and/or H2O2 generation in living cells. The review also shows that novel metal complexes, Fe (II) -tetrakis N, N, N'- (2-pyridylmethyl) ethylenediamine (Fe-TPEN) and Fe (III) -tris [N- (2-pyridylmethyl) -2-aminoethyl] amine (Fe-TPAA) act as potent superoxide dismutase mimics in vivo. The iron complexes appear to have the possibility of being applied therapeutically.

The catalytic applications of Nafion-H, a superacidic perfluororesinsulfonic acid in organic synthesis are reviewed. Nafion-H, the acid form of a commercial Nafion-K ionomer, is a highly acidic (H0≥-12) solid catalyst superior to conventional resinsulfonic acids such as sulfonated polystyrenes in its catalytic activity, thermal stability and chemical resistance.Nafion-H catalyst is effective in a wide range of liquid and gas phase reactions, including electrophilic substitutions on aromatic nuclei, dehydration of alcohols, rearrangements, polymerizations and so on. Nafion-H and related perfluoroalkanesulfonic acids are not only much stronger acids but are also stable in corrosive environments and at temperature up to 210°C. Furthermore, specific advantages of using insoluble resins as catalysts include i) ease of by-product separation from the main reaction product usually by simple filtration; ii) prevention of intermolecular reaction of reactive species or functional groups by simulating high dilution conditions; iii) the possibility of reusing recovered reagents as well as eliminating the use of volatile or noxious substances.

Recently, opportunistic fungal infections are becoming more important in the compromised patients.The review summarizes current attempts to find new and useful antifungal antibiotics mainly active against opportunistic fungal pathogens. Based on the chemical structures, antifungal antibiotics reported since 1987 are conveniently classified into 12 types : 1) polyene macrolide and related antibiotics, 2) lipopeptide antibiotics, 3) glycolipid antibiotics, 4) glycolipid/lipopeptide related antibiotics, 5) alkylphenol antibiotics, 6) terpenoid antibiotics, 7) cyclodepsipeptide antibiotics, 8) peptidonucleoside antibiotics, 9) amino acid antibiotics, 10) condensed polycyclic aromatic antibiotics, 11) halogenopyrrole antibiotics and 12) miscellaneous antibiotics. Finally, the principles and strategy for screening of antifungal antibiotics are discussed.

沸騰無水酢酸中でトリクロロ酢酸とアゾキシベンゼンが反応し, Wallach転位が進行することは以前に報告した。(1)2.2'-および4,4'-ジメチルアゾキシベンゼンはかなりの収率で相当する。4-および2-ヒドロキシアゾ化合物を与えた。(2)α-p-メチルおよびα-p-メトキシアゾキシベンゼンではいずれの場合もp-ヒドロキシアゾ化合物より高収率でo-ヒドロキシアゾ化合物が得られた。(3)β-p-ニトロアゾキシベンゼンは全く反応しなかった。(4)モノおよびジクロロ酢酸は2,2'-ジメチルアゾキシベンゼンに対し触媒作用を示したが, 収率はきわめて低かった。

Carbon dioxide has been widely used in society for a century or so. In the light of today need to save resources, it is an urgent task for us to reexamine this basic material from every possible standpoint. This paper, in which data on its physical and chemical characteristics in particular are compiled and handling methods for high pressure product are listed, has been prepared as referential data for technical people who are interested in carbon dioxide.

Methods for preparation of organofluorine compounds are reviewed from the view point of the reagent system consisting of fluoride ion and an oxidant. Reagents like N-halo imides are often used as the oxidant, which may be replaced by electrochemical oxidation. These methods provide us with various types of fluorinated compounds efficiently and selectively under mild conditions.

Syntheses of hardly available ring structures through ring enlargement reactions are illustrated with the emphasis on the methods of high utility from the synthetic point of view.I One-Carbon Ring Enlargement. The molecular rearrangements involve active species such as carbonyl-diazomethane adducts, β-hydroxycarbenium ions, β-oxidocarbenoids, and β-bromo alkoxides respectively. Oxidative rearrangement is performed by means of cyanogen azide or thallium (III) nitrate. Bicyclo [n. 1.0] alkanes also are key intermediates for the one-carbon homologation. Photolysis of bicyclo [n. 2.1] alkanones having a carbonyl bridge undergoes Norrish Type I reaction resulting in ring expansion.II Two-Carbon Ring Enlargement. This methodology consists in the reaction of enamines of cyclic ketones with ketenes or acetylenes, acyloin condensation of cycloalkane-1, 2-dicarboxylic acid esters followed by thermolysis, and [1, 3] sigmatropic rearrangement.III Three-Carbon Ring Enlargement. Photolysis of α-cyclopropyl ketones and β, γ-unsaturated ketones, and fragmentation of bicyclo [n. 3.0] alkenones are discussed.IV Four-Carbon Ring Enlargement. Typical examples are the oxy-Cope rearrangement and fragmentation of bicyclo [n. 4.0] alkanes.V Miscellanea
