We present a model-independent calculation of hadron matrix elements for all dimension-6 operators associated with baryon number violating processes using lattice QCD. The calculation is performed with the Wilson quark action in the quenched approximation at β=6/g2=6.0 on a 282×48×80 lattice. Our results cover all the matrix elements required to estimate the partial lifetimes of (proton,neutron)→(π,K,η)+(ν̅ ,e+,μ+) decay modes. We point out the necessity of disentangling two form factors that contribute to the matrix element; previous calculations did not make the separation, which led to an underestimate of the physical matrix elements. With a correct separation, we find that the matrix elements have values 3–5 times larger than the smallest estimates employed in phenomenological analyses of the nucleon decays, which could give strong constraints on several GUT models. We also find that the values of the matrix elements are comparable with the tree-level predictions of the chiral Lagrangian.

We carry out a feasibility study for the lattice QCD calculation of the neutron electric dipole moment (NEDM) in the presence of the theta term. We develop the strategy to obtain the nucleon EDM from the CP- odd electromagnetic form factor F-3 at small theta, in which NEDM is given by lim(q2 -> 0 theta)F(3)(q(2))/(2m(N)), where q is the momentum transfer and m(N) is the nucleon mass. We first derive a formula which relates F-3, a matrix element of the electromagnetic current between nucleon states, with vacuum expectation values of nucleons and/ or the current. In the expansion of theta, the parity-odd part of the nucleon- current- nucleon three-point function contains contributions not only from the parity-odd form factors but also from the parity-even form factors multiplied by the parity-odd part of the nucleon two- point function, and, therefore, the latter contribution must be subtracted to extract F-3. We then perform an explicit lattice calculation employing the domain- wall quark action with the renormalization group improved gauge action in quenched QCD at a(-1) similar or equal to 2 GeV on a 16(3) x 32 x 16 lattice. At the quark mass m(f)a = 0: 03, corresponding to m(pi)/m(rho) similar or equal to 0:63, we accumulate 730 configurations, which allow us to extract the parityodd part in both two- and three- point functions. Employing two different Dirac gamma matrix projections, we show that a consistent value for F-3 cannot be obtained without the subtraction described above. We obtain F-3(q(2) similar or equal to 0:58 GeV2)/(2m(N))= -0:024(5) e . fm for the neutron and F-3(q(2) similar or equal to 0: 58 GeV2)/(2mN) = 0:021(6)e . fm for the proton.

A new numerical method of calculating the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) and time-dependent HFB (TDHFB) with the Gogny interaction is proposed. The three-dimensional harmonic-oscillator (3DHO) basis functions are replaced by one-dimensional spatial grid points of Lagrange mesh plus two-dimensional harmonic-oscillator basis functions in the perpendicular plane to the direction of the spatial grid points [Lagrange mesh and harmonic oscillator (LMHO)]. By using the LMHO, the calculations of the HFB and TDHFB are carried out in the typical nuclei of 20O and 34Mg as an illustration of the feasibility of the TDHFB formulation with the LMHO. The strength functions of the quadrupole vibrations (K=0) are obtained and are compared with the ones calculated with the 3DHO.

We propose a new theoretical approach to ground and low-energy excited states of nuclei extending the nuclear mean-field theory. It consists of three steps: stochastic preparation of many Slater determinants, the parity and angular-momentum projection, and diagonalization of the generalized eigenvalue problems. The Slater determinants are constructed in the three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate representation capable of describing arbitrary shape of nuclei. We examine feasibility and usefulness of the method by applying the method with the Bonche-Koonin-Negele interaction to light 4N nuclei, 12C, 16O, and 20Ne. We discuss difficulties of keeping linear independence for basis states projected on good parity and angular momentum and present a possible prescription.

We show the formulation and the result of test calculation of the overlap of excites states in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation for calculating the nuclear matrix elements of the neutrino-less double beta decay. Our method uses the ground states of the QRPA explicitly. The feasibility of that calculation is demonstrated, and the effectiveness of the truncation used in our method is shown.

1. Kawaraban in the Edo Period In the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, many kinds of Kawaraban (used as News sources of the commonalty) were published in the metropolis like Edo and Osaka. In the past, it was said that the oldest Kawaraban prints were published in the days of the Osaka War (1615), but the recent research has brought a new theory that they were made in earlier period. Kawaraban had several distinctive features. * news were their main contents * people paid money to read them * instant prints* publisher was anonymous * no fixed format and low quality prints There were many kinds of news printed in the Kawaraban such as catastrophe (fire, earthquake and eruption), murder cases (Katakiuchi (vengeance) or Shinju (double suicide)), strange incidents (appearance of monster or ghost), and the arrival of the foreign ships called Kurofune. The Edo-bakufu strictly prohibited production and selling of the prints that dealt with such topics. But in the end of Edo-era, enormous amount of public prints were produced for the mass while the censorships by Edo-bakufu became nominal, and Kawaraban were published openly. In particular, big fires broke out frequently in Edo and the Kawaraban often reported their damages. The disaster information of the Kawaraban was relatively credible, and therefore served to calm people's fears and also transmitted the situations of the damages from Edo to provinces. 2. Kawaraban of Black Ships (Kurofune Kawaraban) In 1853 (Kaei-6), Admiral Perry voyaged to Uraga, and urged Japan to start commerce. Edo was thrown into an uproar, and hundreds of Kawaraban which informed this incident were produced. These "Kurofune Kawaraban" told the people the circumstance by the stereotypical images and some fultual information. The Kurofune Kawaraban were non-censored illegal prints, and many of them were one-sheet-type. It was rare that such printings containing political information were published in a large quantity and were purchased by the general public. In this paper, I will analyze the image of the Kurofune Kawaraban, and examine their roles in the public world.

In the various teachings found in the Nikāyas, there is no consistent, systematic explanation about the process or method for how Buddhist practitioners achieve the “fruits of the saints” or attain emancipation. Since the descriptions of the same subject in different parts of the Nikāyas do not show clear correlation, and are somewhat fragmented, it would seem that the elements of the system of practice outlined in the Nikāyas are discordant with each other to a certain degree. However, by analyzing the different contexts that a certain subject is taught in, it is possible to understand these various teachings as a unified system. With this framework in mind, this paper explores the concept and attainment of cetovimutti (emancipation of the heart) and paññāvimutti (emancipation by wisdom), both states achieved by arahants, based on their relation to the system of “The Four Noble Truths” and “The Noble Eightfold Path.” Doing so will clarify the following points. It is thought that cetovimutti is derived from the expression of meaning “release in the mind,” or in other words “complete emancipation.” However, it does not appear to carry the same meaning in every case. When cetovimutti and paññāvimutti appear as a pair, cetovimutti is placed at the midway point to emancipation, while complete emancipation is identified as achieving paññāvimutti. In this way, when cetovimutti and paññāvimutti both appear as a pair they both are regarded as the state of complete emancipation of an arahant. In other contexts, cetovimutti means “the release of the heart from lust (rāga) by achieving the eighth item in the Noble Eightfold Path (i.e sammāsamādhi or the four jhānas),” while paññāvimutti means “the release from ignorance (avijjā) by the attainment of wisdom that is the complete realization of the Four Noble Truths, attained by completing the Noble Eightfold Path.” It is thought that by achieving the ninth and the tenth qualities of the ten qualities of arahant (dasa asekhā dhammā), right knowledge (sammāñāṇa) and right emancipation (sammāvimutti), the first eight items of this system are none other than the Noble Eightfold Path. In this case, paññāvimutti comes after cetovimutti, in the same way that wisdom (paññā) comes after meditation (samādhi).
