There has been a marked decline in the hunter population in Japan. For the success of wildlife management, local governments should build a sustainable wildlife population management system (SWPMS). Here, I show the trend in the hunter population over the past 40 years and discuss the programs for building SWPMS. The decline in the hunter population started simultaneously across the whole of Japan from 1979. One of the reasons for this decline was that the hunting and gun ownership regulations were strengthened in 1978. As a result of these revisions, gun hunters have been declining since 1979. In contrast, the number of trappers, who desire to kill nuisance animals, has been increasing since the 1990s. According to our questionnaire surveys, which were conducted in 2012, the average retirement age of trappers (64.2 years) was younger than that of gun hunters (69.5 years). However, the average hunting career of trappers (9.3 years) was considerably shorter than that of gun hunters (40.0 years). These results suggest that the increase in trappers may not be effective for SWPMS. Three programs are necessary for SWPMS. The first is to increase the bag per hunter. The second is to increase and educate the candidates for hunting. The third is to provide economic incentives for population management activities. Implemented in combination, these programs would make it possible to build SWPMS.

The Japanese hunter population has been declining and aging since the 1970s. As hunters' removal of nuisance animals is important for the prevention of agricultural damage, their retention is critical for sustainably managing Japan's wildlife. In order to understand the reasons for the decline in the number of hunters and propose appropriate retention measures, we surveyed 1,409 people who did not renew their hunting licenses in 2008 and 2009. The respondents who revoked their trap hunting licenses were younger and had significantly shorter hunting careers than those who revoked their gun hunting licenses. The former had mostly carried on hunting for nuisance control until the cost of hunting became too expensive for them to continue. Therefore, provision of economic incentives could be an important retention measure. While the main reason given by both big game and bird hunters was the reinforcement of gun holding regulations, bird hunters indicated that the reduction in the number of game birds and loss of hunting area were also problematic factors. Thus, in order to retain bird hunters, it is important to improve the environmental conditions of bird hunting.

41歳女性がパロキセチン5,740 mgを服用後,発熱,散瞳,腱反射亢進,眼球クローヌス,ミオクローヌスを呈しセロトニン症候群と診断した。翌日torsades de pointes(TdP)が出現したが,硫酸マグネシウム投与で消失した。血中KやMg値の補正にもかかわらずQTc時間延長の改善は乏しく,最終服用後7日目に測定したパロキセチン血中濃度は異常高値を示した。ベンゾジアゼピンとシプロヘプタジンによる対症療法でセロトニン症候群は軽快し,またQTc時間は正常化した。本例はパロキセチンの大量服用以外に明らかな誘因なくTdPを来した初めての報告である。パロキセチンはselective serotonin reuptake inhibitor(SSRI)の中でも安全性は高いとされるが,高用量を服用すると代謝酵素CYP2D6の働きを阻害することで血中濃度が非線形的に上昇した結果TdPを起こしたと推測した。

Congenital maxillomandibular fusion is a very rare congenital anomaly in which the maxilla (medial orbital wall or maxillary process) and mandible (mandibular process or lateral lingual swelling) adhere via bony or soft tissue. It is also called congenital maxillomandibular fusion or congenital syngnathia or congenital oral synechia, but is referred to as congenital maxillomandibular fusion in this paper. We describe a case that developed in a 2-day-old male infant with cleft lip and palate. He was born at 40 weeks, 4 days’ gestation and weighed 3046 g. The Apgar score was 8/9. His condition was diagnosed as lactation disorder, cleft lip and palate, and a funicular structure from the lower lip to palate at birth, and he was admitted to our department in Okinawa Chubu Hospital. We resected the funicular structure extending anteriorly from the left lower lip to the left incisive bone. To date, five kinds of desmoplastic attachment areas have been reported, which are the residual ridge interval, floor of mouth and hard palate, tongue and hard palate, tongue and soft palate, and lower lip and the hard palate. Cleft palate is the most commonly reported complication of congenital maxillomandibular fusion, and syndromes such as Van der Woude syndrome (cleft lip and palate, lower lip fistula), popliteal pterygium syndrome (cleft lip and palate, lower lip fistula, genital malformation, limb malformation, popliteal pterygium) have also been reported. Only two cases of congenital maxillomandibular fusion in which the palate adhered to the lower lip in association with popliteal pterygium syndrome have been reported. We recently encountered a patient with bilateral cleft lip and palate who had adhesion between the lower lip and hard palate, and report this case along with a review of the literature.

25年来の統合失調症の既往があり,入退院を繰り返している54歳男性が,常用薬の自己中断により異常行動を引き起こし,その後に昏迷・発熱を来たした.悪性症候群と悪性カタトニアの鑑別に苦慮したが,悪性カタトニアの治療的診断として少量ベンゾジアゼピンの投与を行い,症状の改善を認め,悪性カタトニアと診断した.

振り子の流体励起振動を用いた革新的な水流発電機を開発してきた.本研究では,円柱振り子の渦励振を用いた従来の方式に代わり,半円柱や半楕円柱の振り子に生じるギャロッピングを採用した新方式を提案した.この新方式において,半円柱振り子は円柱振り子の5倍,半楕円柱振り子は半円柱振り子のさらに2倍のエネルギー取得性能を発揮した.半楕円柱振り子の無次元仕事率は,低流速域では,振り子長さに関係なく一本の回帰直線に沿って無次元流速とともに線形的に増加し,高流速域では,無次元流速に対してほぼ一定値を示すことが明らかとなった.

Mail survey is the most well used method for understanding public perceptions of certain topics. However, low response rate has been pointed out as the disadvantage of this method. We compared perceptions and socio-demographics of early respondents and late respondents to predict characteristics of non-respondents as well as to reveal issues that mail survey method entails. We used data of the mail survey conducted to retired hunters of all over Japan in 2012. Multiple regression analysis revealed that respondents who were interested in re-acquiring hunting license tended to be late in responding to survey (p<0.05).

The adsorption mechanisms of nitrate ion on chemically and physically treated activated carbon (AC) were investigated. The commercial activated carbon (NORIT R1 EXTRA) was first de-ashed with both acids of HCl and H2F2. The de-ashed AC was then treated with nitric acid to introduce acidic functional groups on the surface, subsequently outgassed at different temperatures of 600, 800 and 1000 °C in helium flow to eliminate acidic functional groups. Also, the out-gassing treatment at different temperatures of 500, 700 and 1000 °C was conducted for the de-ashed AC to increase Cπ electon site on the graphene layer. The results obtained in this study showed that the introduction of acidic functional groups on the surface of AC could be achieved through acid treatment with nitric acid. Carboxylic and lactonic groups could be completely removed by out-gassing under the temperature over 800 °C. Also, Cπ electron site was increased accompanying to higher temperature in the process of out-gassing. The surface acidic functional groups such as carboxylic and lactonic groups prevented the adsorption of nitrate ion, while no interruption for the adsorption of nitrate ion by phenolic hydroxyl group was observed contrastive to carboxylic and lactonic groups. The amount of nitrate ion adsorbed on the carbon could be increased with the expansion of basic site.
