This paper aimed to examine the calculation method and the standard for area necessary for after-school children's day-care center. It was shown that the examination only depending on the evaluation by staff resulted in an indefinite outcome, and the indicator focused on kinds of children's plays was effective. Moreover, multiple foundations of the calculation were found, and the process of calculating the standard for necessary area based on the combination of these foundations was suggested.

This paper aimed to clarify the relationship between family communication and the structure of dwelling space in the period of growth and development (the 2nd grade of elementary school - the 2nd grade of junior high school). Consequently it was shown that 1) College students period: If the path of flow always passes through the family living space, a high percentage of families enjoy each other's company once a week or more, only for women and the total of men and women, 2) Growth period: there was no significant correlation between the structure of dwelling space and actual family communication, 3) Growth period: a relationship in terms of location between the parents' room (not the children's room) and the family living space correlates to the psychological distance of children to their parents.

This study investigated the evaluation of ‘impression’ and sound environment for open plan type classrooms by elementary school children and teachers. From the results, it has been found that the children and teachers have good impressions for open-plan type classrooms. From evaluation of teachers, there was indication that an area around a desk of a child was narrow. From the evaluation of children, we understand that good ventilation, moderate brightness, sufficient space and adequate room temperature were important elements for classroom environment. In cases of schools, which were designed in consideration for acoustical environmental benefit, there were no effective evaluation given by children even though the acoustic characteristics improved. The challenge for the future design of open-plan classroom in elementary school is the realization of open-plan spaces with visual connections that retain the good impressions with high level of acoustic environment.

Through this study, the important issues for planning open-plan learning environment were summarized as follows:1. Teachers are satisfied with ‘open space’ for various learning style and they want to use open spaces more conveniently.2. Teachers recognize advantage of open-plan learning environment in terms of learning effects and psychological aspect. However, if the indoor environment such as acoustic condition has significant problems, teachers don't highly evaluate the open-plan.3. Open-plan learning environments work properly in the cooperative teaching management system by each grade.4. When student numbers exceeds the capacity of learning environment, it is difficult to manage a grade as a group. In this case, class activities are mainly managed by each class and the class uses open space as an extension of its classroom.5. Teachers require the classrooms that can be both open and closed condition with appropriate acoustic performance for open-plan learning environment.

In this study, we will focus on the “Sea Cat Study Abroad System”, which has a 22-year history of actually operating the studying abroad island system. As a result, it is worth noting that children’s daily life and school life are not completed only at home or school, but are carried out throughout the region, so that learning and experiences that can not be obtained only at home or school can be obtained. The actual situation was caught. However, there are problems with the adoption of foster parents, such as the aging of the foster parents.

This study aims at considering about planning of primary schools through the investigation works that observed the actual conditions of pupils' activities were undertaken at Utase Primary School since 4 years ago when it established. This paper reported the feature of the way to use spaces and the actual conditions of pupils' grouping (; they were analyzed from the viewpoint of furniture arrangements and pupils' activities). This work revealed as follows:, 1) In Utase, there were some various spaces in learning spaces. It is different from learning spaces as before that were composed by only 'class spaces' and 'open spaces'. 2) The various spaces were composed in the spaces of each grade, but it has been changing continually by increasing the number of pupils and classes. Finally, it showed the relations between learning activities, the various spaces and the groups of activities.

By surveying pupils and school personnel on their evaluations and actual usage of the spaces, this paper aims to obtain information that will provide details on future proposals. The surveyed case was Elementary School A has various forms and settings of workspaces (WSs). As a result, it was found that the open spaces (composed of a series of small spaces of different scales and settings, which is a feature of elementary schools), have promoted pupils' spatial recognition and diverse activities. It is then, we believe that implementing these open spaces will promote various activities related to living, learning, and playing and expand schools' range of educational activities and choice of places.

In order to study the acoustical problem in open-plan type schools, the relationship between space planning and sound environment was investigated for three open-plan type elementary schools. Acoustical conditions of classrooms were measured by sound propagation property between classrooms and sound level during class activities. Besides, questionnaire survey on teachers and children and inquiring survey on teachers were performed. From the results, it was confirmed that the lack of acoustical design worsens the sound environment of classrooms and induces the restriction of space use.
