Background: Abnormalities in autonomic control are a feature of neuroendocrine activation in HF and are responsible for dysregulation of biological rhythms. The purpose was to investigate the presence and the prognostic significance of long-period heart rate (HR) rhythms in heart failure (HF) patients. Methods and Results: In the study, 92 HF patients were enrolled (age 53±14 years and left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF] 37±10%). A rhythmometric analysis was used to assess the HR rhythms in 7-days (7D) Holter recordings. Rhythms properties were quantified by mesor and amplitude, in beats/min and by acrophase, in hours. Cardiac death or HF decompensation were registered. All patients had 24-h rhythm, 61 patients (77%) had 8-h rhythm, and 66 patients (83%) had 7D rhythm. Twelve patients (15%) experienced events. Among rhythm parameters only 7D median amplitude was different between patients with or without events: 1.1beats/min [0.5–1.5] vs. 2.0beats/min [0.0–3.9], P=0.049 respectively. After multivariate adjustment, LVEF (per 1%, hazard ratio 0.92, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.87 to 0.98, P=0.01), N-terminal portion of pro-natriuretic hormone type B (per 100pg/ml, hazard ratio 1.036, 95% CI 1.005–1.069, P=0.022), and 7D amplitude of the HR ≤1.71beats/min (hazard ratio 5.4, 95% CI 1.2–34.4, P=0.047) were independent predictors of events. Conclusions: A 7D HR rhythm is present in most patients with HF, and has prognostic significance.

This paper describes a new metric for evaluating the cost effectiveness of software reviews. The proposed metric is based on the degree to which costs needed for detecting all faults from software are reduced by software reviews in a project. The metric can be interpreted as combining two conventional metrics proposed by Fagan (1976) and Collofello and Woodfield (1989). As the proposed metric is normalized by virtual testing cost, we can compare the values of it among any different kind of projects. Using an experimental evaluation of the conventional metrics and the proposed metric for data collected in an industrial environment, we show the validity and usefulness of the proposed metric. In addition, we present a method to estimate a value of the proposed metric by using only the values which can be computed during the software reviews.

To investigate the long-term effect of feeding royal jelly (RJ) on the testicular function, 32-week old male golden hamsters were fed diet containing RJ at doses of 0 μg/g diet (control), 50 μg/g diet or 500 μg/g diet for 12 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the hamsters were assessed for testicular function in terms of the amounts of intra-testicular free testosterone (TS) and histopathological changes. RJ diet groups showed higher TS levels and more intensive spermatogenesis than the control group in a dose-dependent manner. The intensity of spermatogenesis and TS levels in the 500 μg of RJ/g diet group showed significant differences of p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively, when compared with those in the control group. These results indicate that the long-term feeding of RJ inhibits the age-associated decline in the testicular function of male hamsters.

The northern snakehead Channa argus, native to China, Russia and Korea, is currently found widespread throughout Japan following its original introduction during the 1920s. A parasitological study of 10 snakeheads fished from the Fushinogawa River running through Yamaguchi City, Japan, detected 2–101 (average, 23.7) metacercariae per 100 g of trunk muscle from each fish. The trematode was identified as metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum sp. (Strigeidida: Diplostomidae) morphologically and characterized genetically based on the ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA). Phylogenetic trees were constructed on the basis of either the 18S, ITS or 28S region of rDNA to assess the relationship among members of the family Diplostomidae. The addition of genetic data from more diplostomid taxa, particularly Posthodiplostomum cuticola recorded from a variety of freshwater fish in Eurasia, would facilitate the precise identification of the present species.

The objective of the study was to examine changes of intraocular pressure (IOP) undergoing anesthesia in Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta) with Laser-induced Ocular Hypertension. Twenty male rhesus macaques (hypertensive glaucoma eye in OD; normal eye in OS) between 6 and 20 years of age were used for the study. The monkeys were anesthetized with ketamine hydrochloride (10 mg/kg intramuscularly) and 1% isoflurane and then IOP in both eyes was measured by a single investigator using a calibrated TonopenTM applanation tonometer (Mentor, Norwell, MA, U.S.A.). The mean IOP with ketamine anesthesia was 36.70 ± 12.04 (right eye: OD) and 15.88 ± 2.84 (left eye: OS). The mean IOP with isoflurane anesthesia was 19.98 ± 6.67 (right eye: OD) and 15.32 ± 2.15 (left eye: OS). Undergoing isoflurane anesthesia, the IOP of OD was significantly decreased. Conclusively, careful examination of IOP is required to prevent unexpected contraindication on glaucoma patient with isoflurane anesthesia.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the primary causative agent of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome. Two major PCV2 genotypes, PCV2a and PCV2b, have been identified. To explore the prevalence of different subgroups of PCV2 in Taiwan, 37 PCV2 isolates collected during 2002–2011 were analyzed. The genotypes of the PCV2 isolates collected before 2007 belonged to either PCV2a or PCV2b. However, all of the isolates collected after 2008 were PCV2b. Most of isolates obtained since 2008 have been classified into a novel genotype within subgroup of PCV2b based on complete ORF2 sequence analysis. Moreover, analysis of the PCV2 isolates from the same pig farm but from different years revealed that the viruses shifted from a PCV2b genotype to a novel subgroup of the PCV2b genotype. Collectively, PCV2b was the dominant PCV2 genotype in Taiwan currently and that the viruses have shifted into a new emerging subgroup within the PCV2b genotype.

Adult urodele amphibians such as newts are capable of regenerating lost structures including their limbs. In these species, dedifferentiation of myofiber is essential for the regenerative process. Upon terminal differentiation, nuclei of myofiber (myonuclei) are withdrawn from cell cycle, but prior to dedifferentiation, myonuclei reenter the cell cycle. In contrast with urodele amphibians, it is generally accepted that mammalian myofibers are not able to dedifferentiate in response to muscle injury. A recent study has suggested that electroporation can induce dedifferentiation response of skeletal muscle in newt limbs. In the present study, we examined whether myonuclei of skeletal muscle of mammals are capable of reentering the cell cycle by means of electroporation. Electroporation was applied to tibialis anterior muscle of the rat with or without plasmid DNA. Histological analyses revealed that, while electroporation induces degenerative/regenerative responses in skeletal muscle irrespective of the presence of plasmid DNA, the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in myonuclei was observed only in the presence of plasmid DNA. The present results indicate that myonuclei of skeletal muscle are capable of reentering the cell cycle and suggest that in vivo electroporation can induce dedifferentiation of mammalian skeletal muscle.

This study deals with the variation in the content of lipids and cholesterol in the tissues of a prawn, <i>Penaeus japonicus</i>, with the molting stages, postmolt, intermolt, and premolt.<br> The lipid content was highest in the eyestalk and hepatopancreas among the tissuesexamined. The hepatopancreatic lipid content varied during the molting cycle, reaching a maximum value at the premolt stage. In contrast, that of the eyestalk remained almost constant throughout the molting cycle.<br> The cholesterol content was highest in the eyestalk among the tissues examined. In addition, the hypodermis had a considerably high cholesterol content. During the molting cycle, the cholesterol content of the eyestalk varied, reaching a maximum at the intermolt stage.

Besides, one of the modes of infection and propagation of butt rot was discovered by dissecting in detail decayed butts and roots of Sakhalin fir (Abies sachalinensis MAST.) grown in the natural forest in the Tokyo University Forest, Hokkaido.

釣られやすさの種間差を明らかにすることは, 天然個体群保全や放流指針策定において重要である。本研究では, 野生化したニジマスと天然のイワナが生息する自然河川において餌釣りとフライフィッシングを行い, 釣られやすさの種間差を比較した。その結果, 餌釣りではイワナの方がニジマスよりも釣られやすかったが, 逆にフライフィッシングではニジマスの方がイワナよりも釣られやすかった。放流直後のニジマスは非常に釣られやすいと考えられてきたが, 自然水域に馴化した個体や再生産された個体では, 釣られにくくなることが示唆された。

Revaprazan is the first acid pump antagonist with a function similar to that of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It has a dual action, active suppression of gastric acid secretion and gastric mucosa protection. While PPIs are known to enhance the prolongation of prothrombin time by warfarin, no research has been done on the drug interaction between revaprazan and warfarin. This study was conducted in order to verify the potential drug interaction between revaprazan and warfarin. Omeprazole, a representative PPI, was used as the control for revaprazan. We searched for patients who were given either revaprazan or omeprazole along with warfarin using the medical record database of Seoul National University Hospital between July 2007 and June 2010. Among the 15 patients who took revaprazan and warfarin together, 73.3% (11/15) showed more than 30% reduction of anticoagulation effect by warfarin after revaprazan was added. The revaprazan group showed a significant shortening of prothrombin time during revaprazan administration compared to pre- and post-revaprazan medication (P < 0.05) while the omeprazole group did not show such difference. Revaprazan seems to have cumulative dose-dependent anti-warfarin or anti-coagulation effect, as judged from the fact that the longer medication with revaprazan showed correlation with the shortening of prothrombin time (R = −0.632, P < 0.05). This study shows a possible interaction between revaprazan and warfarin and suggests that revaprazan can cause shortening of prothrombin time. Therefore, when revaprazan is prescribed to patients on warfarin therapy, prothrombin time should be frequently monitored.

The roots of Sophora flavescens (Sf) have been widely used as a herbal medicine for the treatment of diarrhea, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and eczema. Cytochrome P450 (P450) forms including CYP1A2, CYP2B, CYP2E1, and CYP3A participate in the oxidative metabolism of theophylline, which is an important bronchodilation agent with a narrow therapeutic index. To assess the interaction of Sf with theophylline, the effects of Sf extract on theophylline-metabolizing P450s and on the pharmacokinetic profile of theophylline were investigated in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Oral treatment of rats with the Sf extract caused dose-dependent increases of liver microsomal oxidation activities toward 7-ethoxyresorufin, 7-pentoxyresorufin, and nifedipine. However, nitrosodimethylamine N-demethylation activity was not affected. The ingestion of Sf extract stimulated theophylline 8-oxidation and N-demethylation activities. The increases of oxidative activities were in consensus with the elevation of the protein levels of CYP1A2, CYP2B1/2, CYP2C11, and CYP3A. Sf-treatment increased the clearance of theophylline and decreased the area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) and the area under the moment curve (AUMC). These results demonstrate that Sf reduces blood theophylline concentration through facilitating the elimination of theophylline. In patients taking Sf, possible P450 induction-induced drug interaction should be noted to decrease the risk of therapeutic failure or adverse effects resulting from the use of additional therapeutic agents.

1.静的視野検査の施行により、視放線の障害部位が臨床的にあらかじめ推定可能であった脳出血による視野障害症例に、機能的磁気共鳴イメージング法および拡散テンソル画像法をおこなった。2.機能的磁気共鳴イメージング法による視覚皮質における網膜位置情報レチノトピーの検討と、視放線の視覚皮質への接続性評価をおこなった。レチノトピー情報は、視野障害を正確に反映した結果が観察された。3.上記結果を、高磁場3T装置に応用し、シーケンスの最適化をおこなった。従来の1.5T装置と同程度の撮像時間内での撮像と、3T装置の長所である高空間分解能が可能となった。実際には、撮像時間は同じであるのに対して、機能的磁気共鳴イメージング法では、従来の1.5T装置では、3mm四方の空間分解能に対し、3T装置では、2mm四方の空間分解能が実現可能であった。拡散テンソル画像法では、1.5T装置では、2.5mm四方の空間分解能に対し、3T装置では、1.5mm四方の空間分解能が実現可能であった。4.緑内障性視野障害は、視覚野における形態変化を伴うことが剖検例で報告されている。緑内障症例に対して高空間分解能機能的磁気共鳴イメージング法および拡散テンソル画像法を施行した。先天緑内障症例において、視覚野、および視放線における形態変化を伴うことが示された。実際には、視覚野において、前方皮質の減少が観察され、視野障害に一致した。視放線に一致した白質の減少も同時に観察された。

Although the Tunnel Field-Effect Transistor (TFET) is a promising device for ultra-low power CMOS technology due to the ability to reduce power supply voltage and very small off-current, there have been few reports on the control of VT for TFETs. Unfortunately, the TFET needs a different technique to adjust VT than the MOSFET by channel doping because most of TFETs are fabricated on SOI substrates. In this paper, we propose a technique to control VT of the TFET by putting an additional VT-control doping region (VDR) between source and channel. We examine how much VT is changed by doping concentration of VDR. The change of doping concentration modulates VT because it changes the semiconductor work function difference, ψs,channel-ψs,source, at off-state. Also, the effect of the size of VDR is investigated. The region can be confined to the silicon surface because most of tunneling occurs at the surface. At the same time, we study the optimum width of this region while considering the mobility degradation by doping. Finally, the effect of the SOI thickness on the VDR adjusted VT of TFET is also investigated.

Plasma profiles of glucose, insulin and lipids were examined in the male WBN/Kob-Leprfa (fa/fa) rat, a new model of type 2 diabetes (T2D), in comparison with age-matched original male WBN/Kob (lean) rats. The fa/fa rats developed hypertriglycemia, obesity and hyperglycemia from 5, 7, and 9 weeks of age, respectively. Plasma insulin levels in fa/fa rats were significantly higher than those in lean rats at 5 weeks of age, but after 11 weeks of age gradually declined to the levels in lean rats. HOMA-IR, a measure of insulin resistance status, showed that fa/fa rats had insulin resistance. The fa/fa rat has the potential to become an important animal model of T2D with obesity.

We examined the effects of porcine granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (pGM-CSF) on the in vitro development of porcine embryos produced by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) for the first time. We evaluated the effects of pGM-CSF on SCNT-derived blastocyst formation and investigated gene expression. A total of 522 cloned embryos in 6 replicates were treated with 10 ng/ml pGM-CSF during in vitro culture (IVC). This treatment significantly (P<0.05) increased blastocyst formation and total cell number in blastocysts compared to the control (12.3% and 41.4 vs. 9.0% and 34.7, respectively). However, there was no effect on cleavage rate. The number of cells in the inner cell mass and trophectoderm were significantly higher in the pGM-CSF treatment group (6.0 and 43.0, respectively) compared to the control (4.4 and 31.9, respectively). Treatment with 10 ng/ml pGM-CSF significantly increased POU5F1 and Cdx2 mRNA expression in blastocysts. In addition, Bcl-2, Dnmt1, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) mRNA expression were up-regulated in blastocysts in the pGM-CSF supplemented group compared to the control. These results suggest that pGM-CSF improves the quality and developmental viability of porcine SCNT embryos by regulating transcription factor expression.

The in vitro activity of 15 antimicrobial agents against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pasteurella spp. and Streptococcus canis from dogs was investigated. For Staphylococcus spp., the highest frequency of resistance was observed for penicillin, followed by ampicillin, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol. The highest frequency of resistance in E. coli isolates was recorded for tetracycline and streptomycin. Pasteurella spp. and S. canis had the highest resistance rate for tetracycline and chloramphenicol. Most isolates showed full susceptibility to low-level resistance to colistin, florfenicol and fluoroquinolones. Further studies using larger number of isolates from both healthy and diseased dogs would provide a broader picture of antimicrobial resistance at a national level and promote prudent use of antimicrobial agents in companion animals.

アマランサスにおけるデンプン合成酵素遺伝子群の解明及びアマランサスの利用の高度化を目的として、以下の研究を実施した。1.アマランサスにおける低アミロース性の合成メカニズム解明:GBSSII遺伝子を確認することはできなかった.現在,デンプン呈色反応で低アミロース性を示す原因として,アミロペクチンの超長鎖の確認を進めている.A. cruentus(PI 433228)のSSSII,SBE遺伝子を同定した.SSSII,SBEは種子発達過程を通じて,貯蔵器官および非貯蔵器官において継続的に発現していた.世界各地に由来する68系統の子実用アマランサスのSSSIを同定し,GBSSIの多様性情報と合わせてそれぞれの種に固有な制限酵素認識配列を検索し,栽培3種の同定が可能なマーカーを作成した.2.低アミロース性品種の作出:M3栽培および調査を行い,これまでに早生性を示す3系統を確認した.今後,残りの系統の形質調査を継続して行うと共に,早生変異系統については早生形質の安定性について確認する.3.加工適性および食味試験評価:性質の異なるアマランサス(モチ性,ウルチ性,低アミロース性)の,生粉およびポップ粉の物性の違いを明らかにした.その結果,モチ性の生粉は小麦粉に非常に類似した特性を示し,小麦粉代替素材として利用できる可能性があること,モチ性ポップ粉は,水を加えてこねると小麦粉のパン生地のような状態になるため,パン加工やクッキーの生地等への応用できる可能性があること等を明らかにした。食味試験評価を,モチ性,低アミロース性およびウルチ性の3系統で,白米との混炊による食味評価試験を行った結果,低アミロース性の評価が高かった.今後嗜好性の高い品種を普及させることにより,消費者の利用拡大に繋がる可能性がある.
