The present study assessed the susceptibility of Candida albicans strains, collected from HIV-positive patients with oral candidiasis, to a commercial 20% ethanol propolis extract (EPE) and compare it to the inhibitory action of the standardized antifungal agents nystatin (NYS), clotrimazole (CL), econazole (EC), and fluconazole (FL). Twelve C. albicans strains collected from MV-positive patients with oral candidiasis were tested. The inhibition zones were measured with a pachimeter and the results are reported as means and standard deviation (M ± SD). Data were analyzed statistically by the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test. EPE inhibited all the C. albicans strained tested. No significant difference was observed between the results obtained with NYS and EPE, while significant differences were observed between EPE and other antifungals. The C. albicans strains tested showed resistance to the remaining antifungal agents. The propolis extract used in this study inhibited the in vitro growth of C. albicans collected from HIV-seropositive Brazilian patients, creating/forminginhibition zones like those ones formed by NYS. This fact suggests that commercial EPE could be an alternative medicine in the treatment of candidiasis from HIV-positive patients. However, in vivo studies of the effect of EPE are needed to determine its possible effects on the oral mucosa.

Cr2O3 is a magnetoelectric antiferromagnet, and its antiferromagnetic domain state is controllable by the simultaneous application of magnetic and electric fields. In the 2000s, that is, more than 50 years since the discovery of the magnetoelectirc effect in Cr2O3, efforts were initiated apply this effect to engineering applications. In this article, we review the recent progress of the magnetoelectric control of the antiferromagnetic domain state and the related phenomena of Cr2O3, in particular, in an all-thin film system, an essential step to the application.

A decade since the discovery of insulin, the increasing prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has underscored the prevailing inequalities in the provision of essential care for T1DM worldwide. However, the details on the availability of insulin types and associated medical devices remain unclear. A cross-sectional electronic survey was distributed across a global network of pediatric societies under the umbrella of the International Pediatric Association (IPA). Access to and availability of pediatric diabetes care were investigated using standardized questions. Responses from 25 of 132 pediatric societies across six regions were included. Pediatric endocrinologists typically manage T1DM together with pediatricians or adult endocrinologists. Nonetheless, 24% of the respondents reported pediatricians to be the sole healthcare professionals. According to the respondents, the patients were either partially or completely responsible for payments of insulin (40%), A1C (24%), C-peptide (28%), and antibody testing for diagnosis (28%). Government support is generally available for insulin, but this was merely 20% for insulin pumps and 12% for continuous glucose monitors. There are considerable disparities in the access, availability, and affordability of diabetes testing, medications, and support between countries with significant out-of-pocket payments for care. Country- and region-specific improvements to national programs are necessary to achieve optimal pediatric diabetes care globally.

Culture and language are interrelated aspects of a society and represent the society's social reality. As differing societies come into contact, they are exposed to different social realities and need to alter their language to accommodate the new elements. Often this is done by adding loanwords. While this phenomenon is common to all languages, the concern here is with the borrowing of Japanese words by English-language mass media.Although individual English speakers who come into direct contact with a foreign culture are most affected, the mass media have a greater influence over the language as a whole. This is due to the increase in intercultural contact as the mass media creates a global community. The media are caught between the languages in that they must use English and yet report on things that are non-English. Closer observation of the media shows that the Japan-based media tend to use more Japanese words than do the media outside of Japan. In this way, one can see how closely language is tied to social reality and that increased cross-cultural contact changes each person's social reality proportionately. Cross-cultural contact through the mass media changes the language in a similar way.

Atorvastatin, a second generation synthetic 3-hydroxy 3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme-A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, reduces both intracellular cholesterol synthesis and serum cholesterol levels, and this could have a potential negative impact on gonadal and adrenal steroidogenesis. Hypercholesterolemia in type 2 diabetes, even when mild, must be treated in an aggressive way, due to the more strict therapeutic goals than in the non diabetic population. Since the wide use of 3-hydroxy 3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme-A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor (statins) in type 2 diabetes, the main aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of “therapeutic” doses of atorvastatin on gonadal and adrenal hormones in 24 type 2 diabetic patients (16 males and 8 postmenopausal females), with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia (LDL-cholesterol = 150.1 ± 32.0 and 189.9 ± 32.9 mg/dl, respectively) studied before and after a 3 months treatment with atorvastatin (20 mg/day). In all patients, lipids and serum cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), androstendione and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were measured, with the addition, only in males, of testosterone and free testosterone index. After atorvastatin treatment a significant decrease in total and LDL cholesterol was observed (p < 0.05), while HDL-cholesterol did not significantly change ( p = N.S.), as no significant difference was found between steroid hormones measured before and after atorvastatin either in male and females. In conclusion, our data suggest that, in type 2 diabetic patients, the use of atorvastatin has no clinically important effects on either gonadal or adrenal steroid hormones.

Topological spin textures on artificial pinning landscape may show unique static and dynamic properties. Here, we computationally show that the helicity of frustrated skyrmions on an artificial square-grid obstacle pattern can be switched by a spin current pulse. The obstacle pattern is formed by defect lines with enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which could protect the skyrmion from being annihilated at the sample edge. It is found that the skyrmion driven by a moderate current shows a circular motion guided by the boundary of the obstacle pattern, while it shows an almost straight motion toward the sample edge in the absence of the obstacle pattern. By applying a short pulse current to drive the skyrmion in a sample with the obstacle pattern, we find that the helicity of the skyrmion could be switched between Bloch-type configurations favored by the dipole-dipole interaction. Besides, we demonstrate the possibility of switching the helicity of an array of skyrmions on the square-grid obstacle pattern using the same method. Our results could be useful for the helicity control of topological spin textures, and may provide guidelines for building future helicity-based spintronic functions.

The juvenile of Indonesian coelacanth, Latimeria menadoensis is here described for the first time in detail with comparison to embryos of Latimeria chalumnae. The juvenile was found in free swimming at 164.6 m depth off Manado, Indonesia on the 6th October in 2009. Because the total length of the juvenile is 31.5 cm, which is smaller than the embryos of L. chalumnae, it is speculated that not much time has passed from its birth. The depth at which the juvenile was found is within the range of the depth where adult L. menadoensis were observed, hidden in a narrow and long overhang where large predators could not enter. The juvenile has a more slender body, smaller orbit, shorter and deeper posterior part of the body (caudal peduncle) between the second dorsal and the anal fins and anterior ends of the dorsal and ventral lobes of the caudal fin (the third dorsal and second anal fins), longer dorsal and ventral lobes of the caudal fin (the third dorsal and second anal fins), broader peduncles of broader lobed fins, larger first dorsal fin and longer supplementary lobe of the caudal fin (caudal fin) than embryos of L. chalumnae. This indicates clear differences in the first ontogenetic stages of the two species, although adults have almost the same morphological features. Latimeria menadoensis appears to reproduce in a rather confined area, because both the juvenile and adults have been found within the same area inside of Manado Bay.

In this paper, we present a path planning approach for mobile robots using semantic maps. Semantic mapping is qualitative description of the robot’s surroundings, that aims to augment the navigation capabilities and task planning for robots operating in human-robot scenarios. It presents a knowledge layer over an existing map representation such that the knowledge information can be used by robots to learn tasks in a human friendly way. We present a planning scheme using such semantic maps, in order to improve the goal reaching capabilities of the robot in a task-planning scenario. Our method can integrates existing path planners into the topological graph planner that produces faster goal searches.

Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) are sporadic atypical parkinsonian disorders associated with 4-repeat tauopathies. These neurodegenerative conditions closely overlap in their clinical information, pathology, and genetic risk factors ; therefore, it is difficult to accurately diagnose CBS and PSP. Recently, an unsupervised machine-learning technique, called Subtype and Stage Inference (SuStaIn), has been proposed to reveal the data-driven disease phenotypes with distinct temporal progression patterns from widely available cross-sectional data. To clarify the differences in the temporal white matter (WM) degeneration patterns between CBS and PSP, this study applied SuStaIn for fractional anisotropy (FA) in regional WM, which was sensitive to WM degeneration, based on cross-sectional brain diffusion MRI (dMRI) data. We obtained dMRI data from 15 healthy controls, 26 patients with CBS, and 25 patients with PSP. FA was calculated after fitting the diffusion tensor model to the corrected dMRI data for susceptibility and eddy-current induced geometric distortions and inter-volume subject motion. SuStaIn was applied to the cross-sectional regional WM tract FAs to identify both the disease subtypes and their trajectories with distinct WM degeneration patterns. To assess the performance of SuStaIn, the classification accuracy and sensitivity for CBS and PSP were calculated. SuStaIn revealed that the CBS degeneration started from the fornix and stria terminalis (FSTs) and corpus callosum (CC), followed by the posterior corona radiata (PCR), posterior thalamic radiation (PTR), and cerebral peduncle (CP), and subsequently extended to the cingulum. Finally, it reached the superior cerebral peduncle (SCP) and corticospinal tract (CST). In contrast, the PSP degeneration started from the SCP and cingulum, followed by the CST, and subsequently extended to the FST and CC. Eventually, it reached the PCR, PTR, and CP. Accordingly, SuStaIn classified CBS and PSP with 0.863 accuracy (sensitivity : CBS, 0.885 ; PSP, 0.840). The results suggested the utility of SuStaIn for classifying patients with CBS and PSP and identifying temporal WM degeneration patterns in patients with CBS and PSP.

[Purpose] The acquisition of motor skills are fundamental to human life. There is a lack of research on whether knowledge of performance or knowledge of result as augmented feedback is more effective. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of knowledge of result and knowledge of performance in the learning of a skilled motor activity by healthy young adults. [Subjects and Methods] A total of thirty healthy young adult males and females without any neurological or musculoskeletal impairment, between the age of 18–30 years were the subjects of the study. They were randomly allocated to 2 groups: group 1 was given knowledge of result as feedback, and knowledge of performance was given as feedback to group 2. Both the groups practiced the task of throwing a soft spongy ball for 6 days per week for 4 weeks, with 40 trials each day. The outcome measure used was the distance of the throw. [Results] The results were analyzed using the t-test. The mean distances thrown by both the groups showed highly significant improvements and throwing distance of group 2 showed better improvement than that of group 1. [Conclusion] Both types of augmented feedback were effective at improving skilled motor activity, but the knowledge of performance group showed better improvement than the knowledge of result group.
