Measurements of gas exchange while breathing gases of different O2 concentrations are useful in respiratory and exercise physiology. High bias flows required in flow-through indirect calorimetry systems for large animals like exercising horses necessitate the use of inconveniently large reservoirs of mixed gases for making such measurements and can limit the amount of equilibration time that is adequate for steady-state measurements. We obviated the need to use a pre-mixed reservoir of gas in a semi-open flow-through indirect calorimeter by dynamically mixing gases and verified the theoretical accuracy and utility of making such measurements using the mass-balance N2-dilution method. We evaluated the accuracy of the technique at different inspired oxygen fractions by measuring exercising oxygen consumption (VO2) at two fully aerobic submaximal exercise intensities in Thoroughbred horses. Horses exercised at 24% and 50% maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max) of each horse while breathing different O2 concentrations (19.5%, 21% and 25% O2). The N2-dilution technique was used to calculate VO2. Repeated-measures ANOVA was used to tested for differences in VO2 between different inspired O2 concentrations. The specific VO2 of the horses trotting at 24%VO2max and cantering at 50%VO2max were not significantly different among the three different inspired oxygen fractions. These findings demonstrate that reliable measurements of VO2 can be obtained at various inspired oxygen fractions using dynamic gas mixing and the N2-dilution technique to calibrate semi-open-circuit gas flow systems.

This paper presents a new sliding mode controller based on the theory of model following control for semi-active suspension systems with Magnetorheological (MR) dampers which have undesirable nonlinear properties. In the proposed controller, a desired semi-active suspension system is chosen as the reference model to be followed, and the control low is determined so that an asymptotically stable sliding mode will occur in the error dynamics between the plant and the reference model states. The advantages of the proposed controller are : (1) measurement of the damping force is not required, (2) the reference model specifies the desired performance considering the passivity constraint of the damper, (3) it is highly possible to maintain the sliding mode and achieve high robustness against the nonlinear properties of the damper. Numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the controller.

2017年5月に西南学院大学にて研究会議を開催し、研究代表者である北垣徹が司会を務め、先ず自身が、「労働する生-優生学の政治的無意識」と題する報告を行い、その後、研究分担者、連携研究者、及び、研究協力者が各自の研究計画を発表した。7月には西南学院大学生命倫理研究会分科会「生命倫理の学際的研究」を西南学院大学にて開催し、『日本が優生社会になるまで』(勁草書房, 2015)の著者である横山尊を招聘し、「拙著『日本社会が優生社会になるまで』が生命倫理の学際的研究に為しうることー相模原障害者殺傷事件から1年を踏まえて」と題する講演を行って頂き、研究分担者である中馬充子が討論者として、書評を含みつつ、この講演に対する批評を行った。その後、横山氏と参加者達との白熱した討議が展開された。当分科会には自立生活センター久留米代表の古川克介氏も招待し、障害者の観点からこの講演に対する感想を述べて頂いた。2018年3月には、西南学院大学大学院にて公開シンポジウム「優生保護法下で何が行われたのか」を開催した。立命館大学生存学研究センターの利光惠子氏、福岡合同法律事務所弁護士の久保井摂氏をシンポジストとして招聘し、前者は「戦後日本における障害者への強制的な不妊手術をめぐって」と題する報告を、後者は「優生保護裁判と国家賠償への展望」を題する報告を行った。また、前述の横山尊氏と分科会員である、日本薬科大学元教授、波多江忠彦氏にコメンテーターを務めて頂いた。加えて、前述の中馬充子もシンポジストとして登壇し、「優生思想を支えた戦後の保健科教育」と題する報告を行った。当シンポジウムにはマス・メディアの記者も招待し、熊本日日新聞の4月8日付けの記事でこのシンポの内容が紹介された。

Physical disturbances are common in dogs with canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD). However, the relation between these physical disturbances and CCD has not been clarified. The aim of this study was to clarify the physical disturbances in CCD by questionnaire survey. The questionnaire consisted of items of general information, physical disturbances (gait and posture abnormalities, and deteriorating perception) and a CCD assessment scale named the CCD rating scale (CCDR). The survey was conducted toward owners of dogs aged 10 years or older in two ways: A web-based (Web survey) and a paper-based (Paper survey) survey. To determine which physical disturbances were associated with CCD, ordinal logistic regression analyzes were performed. Through the Web survey, 726 valid responses were obtained, and the test results revealed that vision impairment, smell disturbance, tremor, swaying or falling and head ptosis were significantly associated with CCD. These items, except for head ptosis, were also significantly associated with, or tended to be associated with, CCD in 103 valid responses to the Paper survey. The prevalence of CCD was increased in the elderly dog population, especially in dogs aged 16 years or older. In contrast, physical signs gradually increased from 10 years of age. These results suggest that physical disturbances may appear in the early stages of CCD. In conclusion, the present study revealed new clinical signs of CCD linked to physical disturbances and suggested that these signs could be useful for detecting early stage of CCD.

We systematically investigated perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in bilayers comprising ultrathin full-Heusler Co2FeSi (CFS) alloy and MgO as an insulator. The MgO layer was fabricated using two different sputtering techniques: reactive sputtering and radio-frequency sputtering. The characteristics of the layers fabricated using the different methods were compared. Irrespective of the MgO fabrication technique, the CFS/MgO bilayers exhibited PMA when the CFS surface was exposed to oxygen, which resulted in additional Fe–O bonds at the interface. Additionally, we characterized PMA in the bilayers while varying the substrate temperature TS for CFS sputtering. CFS samples that were 0.6-nm thick exhibited PMA when they were formed at TS as high as 300°C. The bilayer formed at 350°C exhibited in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Quantitative analysis of the magnetic anisotropy energy density revealed that the dominant magnetic anisotropy contribution in PMA differed between the bilayers formed at 300°C and 350°C. We expect these findings to be useful in the further development of high spin-polarized ferromagnetic electrodes containing PMA for next-generation spintronics devices.

Turfgrasses may inhibit germination and growth of weeds through competition for such as water, nutrients, light and space, and also through allelopathy. Manilagrass is an important warm-season turfgrass, but no information is available on the allelopathic effect of manilagrass on weeds. Since water is the solvent for extraction of allelochemicals in nature, in this study aqueous extracts of shoots and decomposing manilagrass were examine for allelopathic potential.

This study examines the relationship between employee consciousness of the job-related atmosphere and motivation at work. Expectancy theory is used here to develop a framework for the analysis of possible effects. Supportive supervision (`S') and social support of co-workers (`C') are identified as two major factors of employee consciousness of the job-related atmosphere. Employee job awareness regarding its pleasantness and acceptability (`J') is considered here as a moderating variable for the relationship of `S' and `C' with motivation. Several hypotheses are developed upon possible relationships of the above three factors (`S', `C', & `J') and employee motivation. These hypotheses suggest the existence of positive effects of supportive supervision and co-worker social support and their moderating effects due to the pleasantness and acceptability of the job on motivation. A questionnaire survey administered to Japanese manufacturing employees considerably supported the validity of hypotheses. Particularly, the result suggests that the supportiveness of supervision is highly effective in improving employee motivation when the job is perceived rather unacceptable.
