Climate emergency has triggered environmental concerns in different forms of architectural practice. Shenzhen Biennial of Urbanism and Architecture (UABB) provides the framework to question obsolete models that still shape our cities. This report aims to provide a design methodology that addresses the intersection between green resources and the urban environment by examining two pavilions designed by Atelier Bow-Wow + Tsukamoto Laboratory at UABB 2017 and 2019. These projects are the means to reveal the possibility of transforming green waste into resources for reconstructing urban commons based on existing livelihoods. Potentialities and failures are shown, rethinking commons in the contemporary metropolis.

I clarify the operational characteristics of the Nagasaki Urban Design System and the unwritten design manners in this report. I can point out as operational characteristics that the fixed members give advice while long-term, that it is applied to both of public and private projects, that it has no guideline, that they advise after watching the site and the actual product, and that the planners who can understand this system are chosen. vertical louvers of buildings, white tones, rooftop greening and voluminous green, hiding fences, reuse of historic materials, and similar designing are unwritten design manners.

According to the building management and sanitary law, large office buildings of which floor area exceeds 3000 m^2 are to be maintained so as to keep indoor environments with high quality. However, small buildings have been exemplified. In this study, large buildings and small buildings were investigated on air quality and thermal environment. It was then found that both thermal environment and air quality in the small buildings were necessary to be improved due mainly to insufficient ventilation.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics and utilization of the plan of temporary child protection centers, and to grasp the evaluation by users. In the analysis, the characteristics of the floor planning and the trend of the area composition in the facilities in the local area were grasped. Through the evaluation of the living environment, it was clarified that the bedroom serves as a base for children to calm down and to have private conversation with staff. On the other hand, children are forced to spend time in limited space and daily routine.

We constructed a database from published materials and other data on base-isolated buildings. The database contains some items that have not been analyzed before, for example, clearance and design earthquake waves which show the performance of base-isolated buildings. Using the constructed database, we analyzed the present situation and trends of base-isolated buildings in Japan.

The conventional workflow for producing wooden parts requires the wood workpiece to be firmly secured in the position predetermined by a processing path generation step. As a result, it is difficult to process curved raw wood pieces using machines. To overcome this difficulty, we developed a single-shot posture estimation technique using pre-reconstructed 3D points and features, as well as a processing path transformation technique that adjusts the path according to the actual posture of the fixed workpiece. A curved beam named “taiko bari” was processed and subsequently tested. The results demonstrated that the proposed techniques are suitable for practical applications.

In NIIZIMA Island, we can see characteristic stone constructions of MINKA that had been built until the 1930's. We researched 62 cases in NIIZIMA HON village, and measured 18 stone constructions. As a result, we got 13 typology of stone construction.

In this report, the condition to utilize citizen's hole, which is referred to as KOHMINKAN in Japan, as primary shelter in disaster is studied. The case studies for the KOHMINKAN in Funabashi-shi, Chiba prefecture are performed. The rate of learning room and the rate of open space are utilized as the analysis parameters to identify the conditions of shelter. As the result, it is clarified for the taking capacity of refuge people when the KOHMINKAN is utilized as shelter and the condition to utilize the facilities as the base for disaster support activites.

A tap test is used to inspect the full surface of exterior walls, and its results can vary depending on the investigator’s senses. In this study, it was examined how to improve the testing accuracy for detecting lifting of RC wall tiles. Research has shown that diagnosis techniques must be considered from the perspective that judgment results vary, that diagnostic accuracy can be improved by accumulating techniques, and that work time varies greatly among individuals. As a result, it is beneficial for the investigator to confirm the diagnosis criteria with several people during the preliminary on-site meeting.

This report is an analysis of the general catalogs of nine major house builders in Japan. Among the elements in the general catalogs, we mainly analyze the “text” and “images”. The method used is text mining analysis. This analysis shows that in addition to “product introduction”, “corporate philosophy” is an important matter. This result indicates the characteristics of the appealing points that the medium of general catalog emphasizes.

The old-fashioned orangutan house in Sapporo Maruyama Zoo was renovated with a concept of “environmental enrichment” in 2008 spring. The concept was stretched for not only the orangutan but also visitors and a zookeeper as well. In the outside field for the orangutan, there are soils, many natural plants, and some play equipments such as ropes, beds, seat swings, and ponds. On the other hand, at the observation area for visitors, they can see the movement and the condition of the orangutan at close range through the full-height glazing. In summer solar shading strategies as Sudare and louvers can provide the cool spots for the orangutan, visitors, and a zookeeper as well.

The Hokkaido brown bear house in Sapporo Maruyama Zoo was designed with the concept of “environmental enrichment”. To consider the environmental elements which enrich bear’s behavior ‘Evaluation grid method’ was used to draw wide range of ideas from zoo keepers. In the outside exhibition area all ground is covered by soil and there are a hill, a pond, caves, many natural plants and dead trees for bear’s play. In the two observation spaces visitors can see the bear at close range and hear and smell of the bear through the pipes fixed in the wall. Many characteristic behaviors of the bear and visitors were observed including their communication through the window with a large and thick acrylic resin.

Recently, the importance of public spaces has been pointed from the view of establishing the character of the area. In Otaru, some parks planed in Meiji and the beginnig of Syowa era are functioning as central park, forest park, green belt and so on. It is important to reveal the history of these park, because the changing of the roles of these parks had present the transition of their functions in urban structure. This paper, thus, explores planning processes of Otaru park, Temiya park and Hiraiso park, that are originally planed in Meiji and the beginning of Syowa era.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a design method of environment-oriented house to optimize natural energy use such as natural ventilation and sun radiation throughout a year, by switching the combinations of several established passive design techniques as ‘Mode’. In this paper, according to the annual record of switching the modes by dweller with the measurement of temperature and energy, the cost of equipped architectural elements, contribution of workload by dweller, and the ratio of saving energy on air conditioning are evaluated as a reference.

The purpose of this study is to extract the information useful for the countermeasure of the industrial accidents by analyzing the data of industrial accidents at construction sites by text mining. The analysis is based on the past 10 years’ data of 2,413 accidents in the construction site. As a result of the analysis, it was possible to extract the situation of the industrial accident which was more detailed than the previous research. This paper shows the possibility that analysis of industrial accident information described in natural language is effective, when countermeasures for industrial accidents are considered.

This paper is described about the failures of waterproofing membranes for underground structures applied on earth retaining walls prior to wall concreting. In this waterproofing system the quality of waterproofing work may become worse and failures increase because waterproofing membrane is applied to irregular surface of the earth retaining wall, waterproofing work is complicated with demolition work of earth retaining wall and concreting work. So it must be recognized the note of this system and needs to make standard of this system. Before standardizing, we researched the failures of this method and classified.

The impression of space and perception of distance may be different in real space, 3D space on the flat display (DP space), and 3D space on the immersive head-mounted display (HMD space). In this study, the mean value and standard deviation were calculated and verified based on the data obtained from the experiment. The difference between DP space and HMD space for the real space is described. The results showed differences of the perceived distance and, in psychological evaluations, differences of the openness and the presence of the object.

In real space, 3D space seen on the display (DP space), and space seen on the immersive head head-mounted display (HMD space), the impressions of space and perceptions of distance are different. In this study, the t-test was carried out based on data obtained from experiments to clarify the difference of DP space and HMD space from real space. The results show that there is a significant difference between the DP space and the HMD space, and it became clear that the DP space gives a perception close to the real space.

In recent years, learning commons spaces have become prevalent in university libraries throughout Japan. The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics and operational status of learning commons by focusing on spaces where students can eat and drink, which are thought to contribute to their active learning. The study targets 125 university libraries across Japan, and clarified that students use the spaces in different ways depending on their spatial characteristics, as well as operational issues. It suggests the possibilities and challenges of effective use for active learning.

This report deals with the "MASTER ARCHITECT" method as a means of collaboration in the design. The purpose is to make clear the profession of the "MASTER ARCHITECT" through the case study of the campus design of the University of Shiga Prefecture In this study, we set aim at the "DESIGN CORD" adopted in the designing process. We examined and analyzed the interpretation of the "DESIGN CORD" by the participating architects and also the results in their works. The analysis shows the function and the effect of the "DESIGN CORD". With the result of this report, we are able to acknowledge the professional character of the "MASTER ARCHITECT" being responsible to the variety and unity of the spacial environment.
