The purpose of this study was to obtain useful knowledge for constructing new Japanese Long-Term Athlete Development Program by a text mining analysis. Subjects were comprised of four countries, Germany, Hungary and Denmark as world top class, plus Japan. The main results were as follows: 1) Germany: Based on their physical advantage, Germany aimed to improve predictive ability by nurturing their decision making in the speed. So that they could acquire the ability to take an initiative in a game. 2) Hungary: Hungry aimed to encourage their physical strength as most important concept to improve team tactics which focuses on group combinations. 3) Denmark: Denmark aimed to improve predictive ability through trainings in numerically unequal situation at early stage. 4) Japan: Japan set the categories in broad age ranges and aimed to bring up from sensory play to intentionally play to reach worldʼs top level.     When creating new Japanese Long-Term Athlete Development Program, these results suggest that necessities of drafting instruction contents and instruction plan which can achieve “Japanese Total Mobility”.

This study aimed to develop a “questionnaire for shared mental models of a basketball team”, based on the classification of shared mental models by Cannon-Bowers et al. (1993), and examine its reliability and validity. We conducted a questionnaire survey with 453 players from university basketball clubs in Japan. Based on an exploratory factor analysis, four factors and 16 items were extracted. The four factors corresponded to the classification of the shared mental models. The following results were obtained regarding the reliability and validity of the “questionnaire for shared mental models of a basketball team”: 1) Its reliability was confirmed via sufficient internal consistency, temporal stability of Cronbach's alpha, and retest reliability coefficients. 2) A significant correlation was found between the developed scale and factors of an existing scale. The average score of each factor of the team with a high competition level was significantly high. Therefore, the scale's criterion-related validity was supported. 3) As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, the goodness-of-fit of the model was recognized. Additionally, the validity of the construct of the developed scale was supported. Thus, the “questionnaire for shared mental models of a basketball team” had high reliability and validity. Furthermore, it appropriately evaluated shared mental models in basketball. In conclusion, we developed a new simple scale that conformed to the classification of shared mental models by Cannon-Bowers et al. (1993) and could be used in the field of competition. The results of this study provide a new perspective on team building in basketball.

The rule was revised in 1994, and the serving zone was enlarged and two consecutive contacts was allowed in the first contact. Samples were taken from 190 sets played in the 1995 spring Kyushu league of intercollegiate women's volleyball and analyzed to clarify the influence of the rule revision on service and serve-reception.    Main findings were as follows:    1) We divided the 9 meter new serving zone into three 3 meter segments to compare in this study. No considerable difference was found among the three segments in the statistics on the direction of service and the evaluation of results. Service from the previous serving zone accounted for more than half (52.42%) of the whole services.    2) Directions of services which were instrumental in winning/losing the set differed among the three serving zone segments. It was inferred that the direction of service is very important in the game under the newly revised rules.    3) The overhand serve-receptions accounted for very small part (1.46%) of the whole serve-receptions.    4) No considerable difference was found in the evaluation of underhand serve-reception and overhand serve-reception. Almost no influence of the newly revised rules on serve-reception was observed.

This study aimed to develop the assessment of muscle strength and endurance in climbers, and clarify the profiles of muscle strength and endurance in Lead climbers, in relation to performance levels. Muscular strength and endurance, using a traditional hand grip strength dynamometer and an original new climbing-specific grip strength and endurance test, were determined in 12 male non-climbers and 40 male Lead climbers who were categorized into four groups (control, beginner, intermediate and expert). All muscular strength and endurance test were significantly associated with climbing performances (ρ=0.674 -0.747, p<0.05). Differences among the four groups were more marked in climbingspecific strength and endurance than in traditional hand grip strength. Traditional hand grip strength was significantly higher for control group than for beginner and intermediate group. Therefore it is insufficient to evaluate muscle strength of Lead climbers only by traditional hand grip strength, whereas the climbing-specific strength tests used here can be used to evaluate the muscle strength and endurance profiles of Lead climbers in relation to climbing performance.

The purpose of this study was to clarify effective tactics of attack on the sport of rugby sevens using notational analysis of game performance on the menʼs rugby sevens at Olympic games 2016. The main results of this study were as follows; 1) The rate of attack to the open-side and reverse-direction are higher. 2) To breakthrough the defence-line is more difficult than the gain-line. 3) In the number of passes before contact, the rate of breakthrough the defence-line unused pass were the lowest and the rate of unused pass in the Top6 teams was lower than the bottom6 teams and therefore the attack option using pass is effective. 4) In the attack options, the rate of breakthrough the defence-line under the overlap situation is the highest and therefore the attack option to carry the ball at vacant space is effective. 5) In the starting points in attack, the rate of breakthrough the defence-line in attack from turn-over and therefore turn-over is one of the effective starting points.

The aim of this study was to investigate the coaching beliefs of foreign high-performance track and field coaches in South East Asian countries. Five foreign coaches from Germany, Portugal, and New Zealand who represented Malaysia and Singapore in track and field events at the South East Asian Games in 2017 were asked to participate and were interviewed in this study. For the purposes of this research, the factors believed most important for coaching from the coach’s perspective were asked. The results showed that the coaching beliefs of foreign high-performance track and field coaches in South East Asian countries were divided into 3 categories. These were (a) goal oriented: developing athletes’ competence and developing athletes’ character; (b) coaches’ knowledge oriented: professional knowledge, and interpersonal and intrapersonal knowledge; and (c) coaching context oriented: coaching context.

This study investigated the occurrence frequency of accelerations (Acc), decelerations (Dec), and changes of directions (CoD) during the actual handball game and their frequency under high intensity events (HIE) circumstances, using inertial measurement units (IMU).     Participants were female handball players in Japan. 10 players (Age: 24.7±2.3 years old, height: 167.0±8.1 cm, body weight: 65.2±6.1 kg) belong to womenʼs division of Japan Handball League (upper group), 10 top-level university players (Age: 20.6±0.8 years old, height: 165.1±5.9 cm, body weight: 61.0±5.6 kg) from the division 1 of Japanese university handball league (middle group), and 8 university players (age: 20.0±0.8 years old, height: 157.9±5.8 cm, body weight: 54.3±5.5 kg) from a team belong to division 2 of the league (lower group).     As a result, the upper group displayed the highest occurrence frequency in all items, the middle group was second highest, and lower group was the lowest. The result indicates that in competition sites, it is important to implement specializing training based on the understanding of the characteristics of handball as a sport and on the scientific knowledge that we could acquire from the actual games.

The purpose of this study was to clarify visual search behavior and decision time in continuous decision tasks of the toss direction and spike course in volleyball. Volleyball players, ball game players, and non-ball game players (10 in each group) wearing eye-movement trackers watched video images of combination attacks from three directions and made decision about whether the toss direction was left or right and the spike course was straight or cross. The results revealed the following:     1) In comparison to ball game and non-ball game players, volleyball players had a faster decision time for toss direction and the spike course. Furthermore, volleyball players made excellent decision-making even in situations involving continuous decisions.     2) Volleyball players have quiet eye characteristics. In other words, they gaze for long periods at the body, including the face, and torso of players, including setters and spikers who pass the ball.     3) It was revealed that after deciding the toss direction, volleyball players quickly glance at the spiker before the spiker steps in with both his feet and decide the spike course from the opponentʼs upper-body turn or arm swing.

The purpose of this study was to develop a knowledge test for in-game situational awareness to evaluate the presence or absence of knowledge about fast-break situations in basketball. Because the amount of knowledge, which is the basis for making decisions, reportedly affects the superiority of decision-making ability in ball games, the presence or absence of basic knowledge for athletic performance is thought be related to in-game decision-making ability. First, we developed a 44-scene, 88-question original test that included plays on the backcourt and frontcourt for three typical fast-break offensive situations. Seven coaches who had participated in the all Japan intercollegiate championships and 190 college basketball players classified into national championship and local tournament groups completed the original test. As a result, 33 scenes and 45 questions were selected that satisfied the criteria of reliability, internal consistency, and criterion validity. A cross-validity evaluation of this 33-scene, 45-question test conducted by 60 different college basketball players found a significant difference between the national championship group and the local tournament group, thereby validating the test's applicability. This test, which evaluates the presence or absence of knowledge about decision-making for tactical actions in basketball games, could be used to determine the acquisition of necessary knowledge for appropriate decision-making in fast-break situations in basketball games.

We aim to clarify relationships between longitudinal changes in aerobic and anaerobic energy metabolism capacities and training in well-trained 800-m runners, and to identify strategies for effective 800-m training. Eight male middle-distance runners (800-m seasonal best time, 1′53″7±1″6) participated. Their 800-m running performances were set the best competition time in April-June and July-November, and calculated average running velocity. Three running tests on a treadmill were conducted to determine aerobic (maximal oxygen uptake [VO2max], lactate threshold [LT] and running economy [RE]) and anaerobic (maximal accumulated oxygen deficit [MAOD] and maximal blood lactate accumulation [LAmax]) energy metabolism capacities in July and November. Δ (%) represents changes in 800-m running performance and aerobic and anaerobic energy metabolism capacities. Training during this period was used to evaluate length of training time, and training ratio by three intensities; below the LT (zone 1), at or above the LT and below the VO2 max (zone 2) and at or above the VO2max (zone 3). Δ800-m running performance showed a positive tendency relationship with ΔRE and ΔLAmax ( r=0.67 and 0.70, respectively), and a negative tendency relationship with zone 1 training ratio (r=-0.70). Further, ΔRE and ΔLAmax were negatively associated with zone 1 training ratio (r=-0.90 and -0.79, respectively), and positive associated with zone 3 training ratio (r=0.79 and 0.75, respectively). Thus, improved RE and/or LAmax may improve 800-m running performance, and increasing high-intensity (>VO2max) training during a competitive period can improve these energy metabolism capacities.

This study focused on the takedown movements of female Japanese World Champion wrestlers in competition. Take down time which conducted from touching leg to getting point and these movements of two World champions were compared with those of other of other high level athletes.     As a result, World Champion had much higher number of effective takedown and much shorter the takedown time than other wrestlers. The following four findings were obtained as characteristics of a successful takedown movement. 1)Stayed in a forward leaning stance. 2)Head direct movement toward trajectory with little up and down motion. 3)The step back (jab step) of the trail leg was short. 4)Takes a leg attack with the opponentʼs loss of balance.     It is thought that a practical application of these findings could result in more effective coaching and training.

This study delineates the common characteristics of pitching motion in professional baseball players (Top and Minor groups) by focusing on their upper body. With an aim to gain insight into the development of athletic abilities, the pitching motion of the Top group was compared with the Minor group, resulting in the clarification of upper limb issues in the Minor group and amateur pitchers. The subjects were 47 pitchers belonging to the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). The experiment was a fastball pitch with maximum effort. The analyzed trial was the highest ball velocity (average ball velocity 38.9 ± 1.8 m/s). Post-analysis, the following commonalities and differences were identified. (1) There is a commonality in the sizeable external rotation of the shoulder joint during MER (Maximum External Rotation), which is considered a factor in pitching speed compared to amateur pitchers. However, after evaluating the professional baseball pitchers, it was suggested that this movement had a low influence on the ball velocity. (2) There was a commonality in the movements in which the maximum shoulder horizontal adduction angular velocity was more significant than the upper trunk angular velocity. (3) However, in terms of differences among professional baseball pitchers, the Top group pitchers had a greater horizontal adduction angular velocity of the shoulder joint during MER and a more significant extension angular velocity of the elbow joint during REL (Ball Release) by suppressing the forward tilt angular velocity of the trunk during MER.
