The present studies focused on collective efficacy (CE) among Japanese athletes. The purpose of study I was to compare psychological performance CE between individual and team sports, or whether or not athletes had a rival on their team. The aims of study II were to collect, organize, and consolidate enhancement strategies for psychological performance CE. In study I, data were analyzed from 251 athletes who responded to an Internet-based cross-sectional survey. Based on t-testing, no significant difference in psychological performance CE was observed between individual and team sports; however, based on ANCOVA, significant differences were observed regarding whether or not there was a rival on the team. In study II, fifty participants were recruited to participate and a bottom-up approach was adopted by categorizing the types of CE enhancement strategies collected from the participants. The strategies to enhance psychological performance CE were collected through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviewing. The strategies reported by the participants were categorized via arrangement and adjustment by four workers using the KJ method. The data were classified into 10 to 18 strategies for each psychological performance CE item. This study may provide valuable information for enhancing psychological performance CE among athletes.

The purpose of this paper is to explain why the number of participants in the Tour de Okinawa has been increasing during the past twenty years, focusing on the supply-side. Previous research has mainly analyzed participants’ incentives and judgments about the event product’ s overall excellence from the demand-side perspective, which does not clearly explain the marketing effectiveness of the Tour de Okinawa. Because the Tour de Okinawa organizer was not a profit organization, its marketing activities confronted resource constraints that indicated we should consider the effects of the situation. Therefore, we focused upon the marketing activities and methods to overcome the resource constraints. The result shows that the organizer incorporated their organization as a nonprofit corporation, which stabilized their finances so that marketing mixes were improved. The improvement of the marketing mix was also aided by accumulated marketing know-how about the event, which occurred after hiring experts because of the financial stability. These activities by the organizer explain the reason why the number of participants in the event has been increasing.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the features of domestic marathons, and to present the problems and remedial measures of each feature. 51 domestic marathons were classified into four groups, based on the time limit, the hosting institution, the size of the turnout, and the rate of female participants. The features from the results were considered, and the rallies that made the best use of the characteristics of the game and of the region were presented.

Flexibility is one of the important properties of running shoes. This function has been evaluated by the bending stiffness of the shoe sole. However, this evaluation method seems to be insufficient because it cannot consider the deformation behaviors of the human foot and the shoe sole. The human foot can flex at the metatarsophalangeal joint only. This indicates that deformation of shoe sole must be considered. In this study, a new evaluation method for the flexibility of running shoes based on shoe sole deformation is proposed. In this method, curvature distributions of the plantar surface and shoe soles were measured at heel 100 mm up. The proposed flexibility is evaluated from the comparison. The influences of groove position and depth upon the sole curvature distribution were measured by both the experiment and the finite element method. Then, based on the analytical results, several shoes were made and these were evaluated by sensory evaluation test. From these results, it is suggested that matching the maximum flexion point of the shoe sole with that of plantar surface is important.

In recent years, the relationship between sports teams and the local community has been gaining attention among researchers. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effects of sense of community and team reputation on team identity. We conducted a questionnaire survey at a stadium, targeting fans of a J-League soccer club, to collect data on team reputation and sense of community. Analyzing this data revealed that although there was no statistically significant difference in the direct effect that sense of community has on team identity, it was shown that team reputation had a significant, positive relationship with team identity. Furthermore, while there was no direct, significant relationship between sense of community and team identity, the fact that sense of community had a significant and positive effect on team reputation clearly demonstrates that team identity will increase in sports teams in local communities that have a strong reputation.

In this research we aimed to find out the effect of professional baseball teams on the attendance of J. League clubs.    We conducted a regression analysis of the dates of attendance. The dependent variable was the number of spectators per game. In the selection of independent variables, we added 2 baseball variables ( “Baseball game” and “Baseball team franchise” ) to the variables used in existing literature and extracting 16 independent variables.     As a result of regression analysis we found that “Baseball game” had a negative effect on attendance of J. League clubs, and “Baseball team franchise” did not have an effect on it.

This paper proposes a measurement system and computation method for 3D motion analysis in sports. The measurement system that consists of inertial and magnetic field sensors is able to measure 3-axis angular velocity, 3-axis acceleration and 3-axis magnetic field. We can easily perform the experiment in sports because this system is directly attached to the body. Introducing the sensor fusion algorithm using Kalman filter, we can avoid storage error by the drift of the gyro sensor. The computation method provides the angles by compensation of centrifugal and tangential acceleration and sensor fusion.     In order to confirm the accuracy of this proposed system and computation method, we compared the value obtained by this system with the value obtained by a rotary encoder. It was found that the measurement system and computation method provided the accurate value. It is shown that the proposed method can be used for motion analysis in sports.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between experiences in a high school athletic club and resilience. One hundred and ten high school athletic club students (58 first year students ; 36 males, 22 females, 52 second year students ; 30 males, 22 females) completed an athletic situational skills scale, a life skills scale (Ueno and Nakagomi, 1998) and an adolescent resilience scale (Oshio et al., 2002) . Both the athletic situational skills scale and the life skills scale are used to evaluate the psychological skills of students in both their athletic club and school life. The adolescent resilience scale has three subscales, including novelty seeking, emotional regulation, and positive future orientation. Structural equation modeling method was used for the analysis in this study. From the results, it was found that psychological skills in an athletic club relate to resilience through psychological skills in school life. The relationship between experiences in an athletic club and resilience of the second year students was stronger than that of the first year students. This suggests that experiences in a high school athletic club strengthen the resilience of the students if the coaches can work to integrate psychological skills that have been acquired through participation in athletic clubs into school life.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of the Japanese professional baseball industry on the regional economy. In the 21st century, the shift from political centralization to decentralization seems to be promoted, and local governments are expected to bear a large responsibility for the regional economy. On the other hand, many kinds of sports are regarded as encouraging regional economic growth. This paper shows, by input-output analysis, that the Japanese professional baseball industry makes a significant contribution to the regional economy. In this paper, we investigate four issues in the Japanese professional baseball industry and estimate the effect of each on the economy; the strike, new establishment of team, interleague play between the Pacific and the Central leagues, the economic impact of the victory of Hanshin Tigers. First, the economic loss of the strike is estimated at 3.3 billion yen for two days, and 10.3 billion yen for one month. Second, the economic gain of the new establishment of a team in Miyagi Prefecture is about 13.6 billion. Third, the earnings from the interleague play between the Pacific and the Central leagues is about 5.9 billion in total. According to our calculation, the Pacific league will earn 2.8 billion, and the Central league will lose 0.2 billion. Lastly, the economic impact of the victory of Hanshin Tigers team on the Kansai economy is estimated at 148.1 billion yen in 2003, and 64.3 billion yen in 2005. This economic impact of the Hanshin Tigers team on the regional economy is much bigger than that of other teams. Many local governments are eager to attract many kinds of enterprises to encourage economic growth. Nevertheless, we showed that attracting baseball teams and other kinds of sports clubs is also useful to encourage economic growth in the region.

Japan's first professional basketball league, the bj-league, was launched with 6 teams in 2005. The league has expanded its scale since that time. Many organizations in local cities intend to apply to expand franchise opportunities because the operation expense of a bj club is estimated to be 250∼300 million yen annually, which is much lower than that of other major professional sports leagues. However, it is still not easy for the organizations to enter the bj-league. Since the businesses of most local cities in Japan are still suffering from the long economic recession, finding enough investors to cover the expenses is not easy for them. Akita City also faces this situation. Even though an organization in Akita City has prepared to enter the bj-league, it suffers from a lack of investors. It is assumed that to present the economic impact of a bj club to the local business society would be very useful to getting the business society interested in the bj-league. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to estimate the economic impact of the proposed basketball club on Akita Prefecture. According to the results of the input-output analysis, economic impact, including the direct effects and the primary and secondary ripple effects, of the operation expenses of the club and hosting games at the home arena would be 253 million and 172 million yen, respectively. Thus, the total economic impact of the proposed club, was estimated as 425 million yen. The total economic impact will generate income of 170 million yen for companies and individuals, and tax revenues at 5 million yen for local governments in Akita.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the geographic distribution of public sports center users with regard to the distance decay model, and to verify the difference of the parameters of the use frequency level. The findings of the analyses are summarized as follows ;     A logarithmic relationship was observed between the distance from sports center and number of users (R2=.572) . This suggests that the distribution of public sports center users is affected by the distance.    And the distance decay parameter of low frequency users is much smaller than that of high and middle frequency users. This suggests that there is a possibility that users who live a short distance from the sports center would be higher frequency users than those who live a long distance from the sports center.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the variables determining the attendance in J-league matches, using the 2, 699 J-league matches held between 1993-2005 season as a sample. There have been many studies about attendance demand in other countries, but there have been no such studies in Japan. By making a regression equation consisting of dependent variables such as attendance per match, and independent variables such as variables which determine the number of attendance, we clarified attendance demand. In the selection of independent variables, we added 4 J-league variables (“Existence of Professional Baseball Team”, “Distance from Professional Baseball Team”, “April”, “October”) to the variables used by existing literatures and extracting 21 independent variables. The result of regression analysis showed that the attendance demand model accounting dependent variable "Attendance" was about 51%. Except for 2 variables (“Population” and “Income”), the effect signs of variables agreed with existing literature. The results of variables such as “Distance”, “Income”, “Population” and “Existence of Professional Baseball Team”, suggested the conditions which can boost up attendance in the future.

This study aimed at clarifying the differences between the biggest and smallest attendances in the J. League, as influenced by away club. The background is that case management using the popularity of the away club was reported, and precedence research was done to analyze the attendance according to away club.    We analyzed the J. League from 1993 to 2010 to clarify the influence of the away teams on away game match attendance. We searched for the differences between match attendance in away games and the season average match attendance of home clubs over 18 seasons.    The following results were obtained. In 18 seasons, 4 clubs had maximum differences and 8 clubs had minimum differences. The difference between maximum and minimum attendances was 10,000 to 15,000. Regarding the trend since 2001, we found that the differences tended to be larger.    From the obtained results, it was considered that club management in the J. League should consider the influence of the popularity of away clubs on attendance.
