Although a causal relationship has been suggested between Team Identification and Place Attachment, it may be necessary to verify the existence of the parameters between them. In this research, "The rise of Team Identification is accompanied by the rise in the evaluation of the social environment of the community, and leads to the rise of Place Attachment," was aimed at the hypothesis to be verified.    As a result of the two-way analysis of variance based on data from three longitudinal surveys, we determined that Team Identification ascending group significantly increased both Place Attachment and the bonds of the community as compared to the non-ascending group, and it was suggested that the evaluation of the social environment of the community rose in the ascending group. It can be said that the hypothesis was supported, considering the fact that "regional attachment influence structure" was confirmed in Imabari-City, the area of survey on this study.

This article presents the results of research designed to explore the coach dispatch programme which was conducted by the committee of the Japan Gymnastics Association to promote men′s rhythmic gymnastics outside Japan. Although men′s rhythmic gymnastics has been developed for over fifty years in Japan, the existence of this sport has been endangered since around 2001, when global success came to be considered essential for every competitive sport. To bring this sport to more athletes and a wider audience, the committee sent top gymnasts to some countries from 2001 to 2006. However, the details of the programme and the reasons why the programme was terminated in 2006 were not publicly recorded. Thus, this article investigates what the representatives accomplished and what problems and future tasks the coaches recognised to identify the structure of the problems that have occurred in the process of the global diffusion of the sport.    Interview data were analysed according to the principles of the SCAT (Steps for Coding and Theorization) Qualitative Data Analysis Method. Results show that the defects were inherent in their organisation and the programme itself, which were recognised by most of the coaches dispatched, such as lack of close consideration before the programme was set out, and the fact that the coaches were supposed to carry out their mission on a fairly low budget and in an unfamiliar culture, mostly without any support from the committee in Japan. Research indicates that the coach dispatch programme was aborted as a result of a combination of those factors. Additionally, this paper argues that further tasks of the programme suggested by the informants are significantly affected by their understandings of the characteristics of this sport and their philosophy of it.

Although studies conducted to understand why athletes do not use Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) are becoming more common, little is known about the problem from the “elite” athlete’s perspective. This study qualitatively identified the factors that had influenced the decisions not to dope of twelve retired Japanese elite athletes (six males and six females) who won Olympic medals after the Athens Games in 2004. Thematic analysis was used to extract meaning from the semi-structured interview data using MAXQDA11. Personal and socio-environmental factors underpinning their decisions not to dope were identified in the accounts. Personal factors included: (1) personal moral stance; (2) judgment from a wide perspective; (3) intrinsic motivation; (4) task orientation; and (5) resilience. Socio-environmental factors were: (1) education from parents; (2) education from coaches; (3) social pressure; (4) fair play culture in Japan; (5) secure elite sport climate; (6) monetary benefit from winning a medal; (7) access to and knowledge of PEDs. The above-mentioned factors might be useful for developing future anti-doping strategies under a situation where there is a growing social need for actively engaging in promoting elite sports as a national strategy in order to generate success in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, and in view of the fact that the pressure for athletes to engage in doping may be increased.

Opposing clubs involve not only sports competitors but also economic partners that are likely to influence fan behavior. Therefore, it is important to understand rivalry in team sports to ensure the financial viability of the leagues and teams. However, much of the study on rivalry in sports has focused either on professional or high-level men’s collegiate team sports in the US. The research in this study explored the perceptual rivalry of a Japanese professional sport club’s supporters against other clubs and the reasons for the rivalry. Data were collected via an email survey of the official fan club members of Alvark Tokyo, a Japanese professional basketball team in the B.League (N=377). Respondents were asked to rank up to five of the biggest rival clubs in the B.League first division and assess their subjective intensity of rivalry on a 100-point direct rating scale (RP). Next, they were asked to answer the reasons for their rivalry perception, based on 17 rivalry element items. The intensity of the rivalry against each club was calculated as the average value of the RP. A Kruskal-Wallis test was used to assess the differences in the reasons why each club was recognized as the biggest rival. The Chiba Jets was selected as the biggest rival team (RP=84.0), followed by the Tochigi Brex (RP=82.1), the Ryukyu Golden Kings (RP=61.2), the Kawasaki Brave Thunders (RP=56.0), the Seahorses Mikawa (RP=27.4), and the Sunrockers Shibuya (RP=16.9). The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that the reasons for supporters’ perception of rivalry differed significantly across the six clubs. The empirical results suggested that the rivalry against other clubs may be amplified by the overlapping of conditions such as comparable competitiveness, geographical proximity, and historical relationships. Some practical implications are provided.

Generally, the use of public funding for constructing stadiums and arenas is justified by the expected region-wide economic impact, or positive externalities and public-goods aspect of sports. However, it remains unclear whether these impacts or benefits are fully supported by academic evidence. This study, therefore, presents a systematic mapping review of literature to assess the impacts and benefits of sports facilities. Quasi-experiment studies published in peer-reviewed journals since 1997, presenting evaluations of the impact of sports facilities and professional sports teams as well as monetary assessments of their intangible benefits, were reviewed. A structured overview of 52 selected studies, conducted primarily in the United States, is provided. The review presents the scope and type of impact, outcome variables, methodological approaches, and main findings of these studies. The paper presents a series of implications for policymakers and researchers on sports facility management in Japan.

In order to carry out the management of sports leagues stable, the stadium business is focused on. Customer satisfaction of the stadium has been described by the quality of service in the prior paper. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between customer satisfaction and seating arrangement. I went the analysis of the following three. 1. Survey for watching and satisfaction seat arrangement according to questionnaire in professional baseball stadium. 2. Correlation analysis of the seating arrangement and satisfaction in each of the "seating arrangement area of default" and "seating arrangement group of satisfaction". 3. Multiple regression analysis of satisfaction as the dependent variable seating arrangements at each of the "seating arrangement area of default" and "seating arrangement group of satisfaction". The results of the analysis, there is a correlation seating arrangement and customer satisfaction. It is necessary to examine more about the structure of customer satisfaction.

Building consensus among numerous stakeholders is an important yet difficult step in stadium construction projects. Understanding who the stakeholders are and their characteristics is necessary for the success of construction projects. Using archival materials and semi-structured interviews, we identified and characterized the most salient stakeholders associated with the subsidization decision for the stadium construction plan in Kitakyushu city. Stakeholder classification was carried out using a framework designed by Mitchell et al. (1997) that characterized salient stakeholders using attributes of power, legitimacy, and urgency. Definitive stakeholders identified as having all three attributes included the J. LEAGUE, the Kitakyushu City Assembly, and the Kitakyushu City Public Works Evaluation Committee. Although these groups were classified into the same stakeholder categories, their detailed features or roles were different. The Giravanz Kitakyushu, the city’s professional football team, was considered a dependent stakeholder with legitimacy and urgency, but limited power. Our findings highlighted the importance of stakeholder analysis as a strategic tool, especially in the initial planning phase. Practical implications and ideas for further research were discussed.

The Local Authority Act of Japan was revised in September 2003 in order to reduce the costs and improve the quality of public services. As a result of the Act, all local authorities had to introduce CCT for public sports facilities by September 2006. The aim of this research was to clarify the change in the number of full-time employees in public sports facilities before and after the introduction of CCT. The pre-CCT data were collected in March 2005 and the post-CCT data were collected in September 2007. In total, 333 respondents in both 2005 and 2007 were asked to complete the questionnaire. The mean number of full-time employees was significantly higher after the introduction of CCT than before it.

In recent years, social demands and academic interest in the environmental and social contribution activities of professional sports clubs have increased. This is due to the spread of the idea that building good relationships with various stakeholders is essential for clubs to enhance their corporate value. However, it is not easy for professional sports clubs to continuously implement sustainable environmental initiatives (ESI) due to the financial burden. It is unclear to what extent consumers are aware of the ESI implemented by professional sports clubs and how much they are willing to spend afterwards, and there are no studies on ESI by professional sports clubs in Japan. Furthermore, it is significant and extremely important to clarify the results of ESI conducted by professional sports clubs on their teams from a marketing perspective. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between consumer attitudes and behavioral intentions toward professional sports clubs that conduct ESI. To achieve the objective, stakeholder theory and social identity theory are applied as a theoretical background to examine the impact of perceived ESI on intention to support a club and intention to attend a game. Data were obtained from a sample that included potential as well as existing consumers, and it was found that the perception of ESI influenced the intention to support a club and the intention to attend a game. The results of the multiple-group structural equation modeling revealed that the perception of ESI influenced the intention to support a club and the intention to attend a game, even among consumers who had no experience of attending a game. In the future, it will be necessary to elucidate the mechanism and causal relationship by which the perception of ESI enhances intentional loyalty, through what kind of psychological process.

There have been some quantitative studies about the economic impact of professional sports teams on local regions, but there hasn’ t been any study in Japan that quantified the value, including the intangible or public goods value of a professional sports team, for a city. The objective of this paper was to estimate the money value, including intangible value, of a professional sports team for a city by using CVM (Contingent Valuation Method) and to find if the evaluation of the public goods aspect of a professional sport team by local residents has a positive effect on WTP (willingness to pay) . We selected the Japanese professional baseball team “A” and conducted CVM surveys in “B” city in which “A” team locates its home stadium. We estimated that the value of “A” team for “B” city is 141~341 million yen minimum, and 488~1,175 million yen maximum for a year and the present value as 2.4~5.9 billion yen minimum and 8.4~20.3 billion yen maximum. And we found that the evaluation of the public goods aspect of a professional sports team by local residents has a positive effect on WTP.

The aim of this study was to verify the hypothesis that the inhabitants who have higher spectating intention or behavior at sporting events in their hometown hold higher place attachment.     Through the comparison of place attachment among the inhabitants, significant differences have been found. The inhabitants who have higher spectating intention hold a higher degree of place attachment. Moreover, the inhabitants who have experience of spectating behavior hold a higher degree of place attachment than those who do not have it.    The results of this study indicate some existence of the relationship between spectating intentions or behaviors at sporting events, and place attachment. However, the cause and effect relationship between them has not been established clearly. It is necessary to make continuous research targeted at the inhabitants.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the total economic value and value structure of professional sports teams through the CVM approach. The results of the survey showed that the average of willingness to pay (WTP) was 587 yen, and the population of WTP was about 3.28 billion yen. From the weighting of use value and non-use value, the value as private goods was estimated to be 217 yen for WTP and the value as public goods was estimated at 316 yen. The results of this study have academic significance in that the professional sports teams quantitatively showed the values of public goods as well as private goods, while leaving certain problems in the model. In the future, it will be necessary to develop value categories that match the field of sports science, and the development of a scale for social benefits provided by professional sports teams will also be an issue.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Although previous researches have suggested that Team Identification (Team ID) and Place Attachment are positively correlated, the causal relationship between them has not been clarified sufficiently.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In this research we attempted to verify the hypothesis that &ldquo;inhabitants who have raised the Team ID will raise Place Attachment, compared to the inhabitants who have not raised it.&rdquo; The investigation method was a longitudinal survey focused on inhabitants of Imabari City, designed to assess the change in the Team ID and Place Attachment.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The results of the two-way ANOVA showed that there was a significant difference between the Place Attachment of inhabitants who had raised the Team ID and those who had not. Place Attachment of the former increased, and thus the hypothesis was supported.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The causal relationship between Team ID and Place Attachment been clarified by this research, however, the existence and the influence of other parameters have not been clarified. In order to clarify the mechanism between Team ID and Place Attachment, accumulation of expert knowledge will be required.

The present research aimed to clarify the changes in financial expenditures and the number of users of public sport centers before and after the introduction of compulsory competitive tendering (CCT) in one city in Japan as a case study, and to compare performance data before and after the introduction of CCT. The "before CCT" data were collected in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and the "post-CCT" data were collected in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. The mean number of users of public sport centers after CCT was significantly higher than that before CCT. Mean financial expenditures after CCT were significantly lower than those before CCT.

Why do athletes choose to become second-career teachers? This qualitative research explores the factors influencing elite athletes’ choice of becoming a teacher after retirement. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ex-professional athlete teachers (7 baseball players and 7 football players) to discuss the reasons for career choice and factors influencing their decision. The data, which were recorded, transcribed and analyzed through the application of principles from Grounded Theory, resulted in 20 concepts in 9 categories. Examples of categories include achievement of a stable livelihood, desire to remain involved in their sports, and influence of significant others. Ex-professional baseball players samples “needed” to become teachers in post-retirement to lead high school club activities due to the former student baseball eligibility restoration system. Meanwhile, former J. League players tended to become teachers to secure a stable future for themselves.
