This paper examines interactional processes through which personal difficulties or problems as experienced are defined and through which claims are made. First, I look into the constructionist idea of “claims. ” Then, the interaction between claimants is viewed as a reality-definition contest. I examine and develop the description of reality-definition contests formerly given by Loseke (1987). With an illustration of a case of claims-making regarding “fufu-bessei” (an argument against changing a married woman's surname to that of her husband), I discuss and show how one's experience and definitions of problems are involved and invalidated in the mechanism of reality-definition contests.

This article is based on the data of a survey of Iranians currently living and working in Japan. Using Portes' theoretical framework, the author provides an analysis and discussion of several aspects relating to them in view of their strategies for survival and future life chances. The conclusions presented are that; 1) The group of Iranians living in Japan are composed of differing classes of origin and that there is a significant correlation between class of origin and purpose of coming to Japan; 2) The major factors that affects their working conditons are the point in time in the economic cycle they entered the labor market and the extent of their own social networks; 3) They see the Japanese society through the frames of reference that have been produced in view of their expected life chances; 4) Despite the persistence of the economic recession, some Iranians are gradually becoming permanent residents.

Artificial Insemination by Donor (AID) has been performed in secret in Japan for about 50 years. However, we have recently seen an increasing number of problems regarding the welfare of people conceived through AID. The aim of this paper, which uses a social constructionist approach, is to clarify how these people became “claims-making actors.” By analyzing newspaper articles, it was found that Japanese newspapers forced donor offspring to become “actors” who had to go through the newspapers to claim the right to know their origin. Also, the paper suggests, newspapers in Japan both perform the social function and possess the political power to set agendas for the society as a whole.

This paper considers who is “Tojisha” (the person concerned) in the problem of “hikikomori” (socially withdrawn Japanese youth). Through critical reconsideration of the definition of “Tojisha” by Ueno Chizuko, it becomes clear that “Tojisha” by Ueno means individuals who recognize and identify themselves as “hikikomori” with respect to their own needs. Then we examine the “Tojisha” in the “hikikomori” problem and point out that family needs are much more expressed than the needs of those who experience “hikikomori”. Finally, we discuss in what meaning socially withdrawn youth themselves are “Tojisha” and we conclude that we can regard the “hikikomori” subjects as “Tojisha” with an alternative formulation of “Tojisha”: ”the subjects who take their experiences not as something anonymous and but as their own experiences”.

Until recently a distinction between history and historical sociology made little sense, but now, with the contemporary tendency to prefer the present reality of the past constructed from collective memories or narratives of one's experience over factual accounts verified by historical inspection, there seems to be a more notable distinction between the "sociology of history" and historical sociology.<br>To grasp the situation with respect to sociological methods as whole, this article introduces some presentations from workshops and symposiums organized by The Kanto Sociological Society during the last two years. We argue the interaction between historical materials and the sociological imagination and the reflexivity of historiography and "lived history".

In this study, I interviewed people who recovered from eating disorders. This revealed that individual understanding of their illness experiences had changed before recovery and after recovery. Heretofore, the research emphasis in the field of medical anthropology and medical sociology has been on “Illness Narratives” by individual suffering. In contrast, this study has focused on “Healing Narratives” by individual recovery. By showing the sociological research issues found in these “Healing Narratives”, I give meaning to hear the voices of people who have recovered from illness and difficulties.

This paper examines, from a sociological point of view, the religious movements in modern Japan—in particular, the Buddhist movements which proposed to make this world a utopia by the unity of religion and politics.The focus is placed upon the movement started by Tanaka Tigaku (1861-1939) who, before the Second World War, organized the Kokuchukai Society. His movement aimed to unify Japan and the rest of the world by the unity of religion and politics (Houkokumyogo). The movement is, here, defined as “the Nichiren-ist movement of the original theory of national polity” based on his original “theory of national polity of Nichiren-ism”. The special note of this movement is taken to the period of the 1900's to the 1920's.

In this article, an analysis of the discourse on the reading is evaluated as the sociological research on the printing medium in order to clarify the communication and the structure of the social group. The study of reading is classified into the research of the practice and the discourse. The former aims to reconstitute the practice through historical traces, and the latter to clarify the thinking style to guide the practice. Both are expected to be accumulated in Japan, where the study of reading is under way. An analysis of the discourse aims to clarify the way of seeing on the reading. Its attempt is also to anatomize a mechanism of the modern way of thinking.

"Autobiographical acts" not only describe or narrate a particular individual's life but also embody the norms and values acceptable to their (imagined) readers' community. Considering their own sociability, they have to be understood, not as a retreat or withdrawal from the public sphere into privacy or secrecy, but as a prefigured invention of social relationships (i.e., bourgeois public sphere) which supposes dynamism rather than opposition between public and private life. This paper aims to examine the historical interplay between autobiographical acts and their sociability, through various forms of self-narratives (confessions, exemplary autobiographies, novels of development, intimate journals, epistolary writings, etc.) in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century France, through figures or representations of adolescence, as well as through double trust in the veracity of language and the authenticity of self under which conditions they invent intimacy.

Today kabuki is considered as highbrow. This paper clarifies how the highbrow image was constructed, and shows that the image was not created by the specialists of kabuki. Since the Meiji era, kabuki had been criticized as vulgar and non-artistic. The highbrow image has been created by non-specialists who are unaware of the modern history of kabuki as a lowbrow culture. Now kabuki's highbrow and artistic image has spread widely being propagated by non-specialists. It is said that &lsquo;popularization of highbrow culture&rsquo; has occurred in Japan. Non-specialists who are in the majority in Japan have created the image of kabuki as highbrow culture, but they do not have a habit of seeing kabuki in their daily life. It is important for &lsquo;popularization&rsquo; of kabuki that the authorization of kabuki rests on those who are not regular viewers of kabuki.

The accumulated corpus of studies of trust is based on the assumption that trust makes democratic and economic activities productive and efficient. This article explores the possibilities of a functional approach to trust through a reconsideration of the trust theory of Luhmann. His approach to trust is functional involving a comparison of trust itself with other functional equivalents. However, in the studies based on his trust theory, only his concept of trust is considered, while his approach itself neglected. To empirically describe social problems using his approach, it is necessary not to assume that trust is something good, to compare it with other functional equivalents, and to examine how an individual problem is constructed.

<p>"Ethnomethodological studies of work" may be located as one branch within ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. It is a research program Harold Garfinkel, the founder of ethnomethodology had been concerned with during his later years. Studies of work have investigated how work is conducted in workplaces to feed information about the actual organization of work practices into design of work, technologies, and social policies. Thus, studies of work have been conducted in various interdisciplinary contexts. This paper looks into hybridity, i.e., the ambition to merge ethnomethodological studies with the investigative topics treated within the settings being studied, which Garfinkel introduced as a set of criteria studies of work should satisfy, to reflect on how Garfinkel intended this policy to be implemented. Two studies in emergency medical settings are examined in light of hybridity, and also in light of how studies prompted people to think reflectively about social issues.</p>

Recently the public policy to promote voluntary civic action has been more and more criticized. The rapid and dramatic growth of voluntary action after the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake resulted in the institutionalization of non-profit organizations, but, publicly promoted and supported, some civic groups have come to make a close connection with the neo-liberal wing of the government. The public promotion of NPO groups has been originally developed through the structural reform of municipalities based on the new public management. But under the new system many groups, especially ones related to social welfare, have been gradually forced to lose their identity as non-profit organizations. In this article, I will analyze the process of the deterioration of voluntary civic action in the government policy precisely to insist on the necessity that it should be “voluntary” again in the true sense of the word.

In the context of sociology in Japan, where ethnic homogeneity has been assumed and vernacular culture has rapidly vanished since the end of WWII, it has been usual that the term &ldquo;diversity&rdquo; has carried a critical nuance. However, recently, in the age of late modernity, &ldquo;diversity&rdquo; has come to be embedded into the logic of global capitalism and the efforts of national and municipal governments that hope to attract fluid multinational companies and a cosmopolitan &ldquo;creative class&rdquo;. The author seeks to articulate the meaning of &ldquo;diversity&rdquo; in this context, and to point out that what kind of urban practices would be excluded in the recent urban redevelopments that have sought to create cities with diverse urban amenities. This paper examines the paradox that some restrictions on what can be done in the urban space are required to guarantee the diversity in that same urban space.

Symbolically expressed by the concept of flat culture, it has been a long time since the distinction between high culture/popular culture and the definition of youth culture or the youth themselves became blurred. This paper traces the process of identity formation of rock culture and “the youth” as rock listeners in Japan by clarifying the transition in narratives tracing a distinction between the inner and the outer in each Japanese rock magazine. By so doing, the paper demonstrates that the difficulty counter cultures face today is mainly derived from the difficulty in imagining the mass of the population as a unified community.

Why is that many sociologists say that the theory of cultural reproduction coined by Bourdieu has no applicability to Japan? I have shown that there is a structural mechanism that conceals cultural reproduction in Japanese society. Most high status men become cultural omnivores who are familiar with both popular culture and high culture, but overall men are not major consumers of high culture. Because the public field is occupied mainly by men, their patterns of cultural consumption are taken to stand for the Japanese pattern as a whole and thus Japanese culture is seen as popular and equalitarian. High culture and its reproduction receives little attention because it is largely concealed in private domains dominated by women.

Shotengai (mom-and-pop retailers' streets) have been in steady decline. Shotengai are trying to manage vacant stores and public spaces. The problem here is a framework that separates private space from the public space. This paper analyzes a machiguwa area in Naha city from a historical perspective that seeks to explore how a certain form of “public” land use might overcome the dichotomy between private space and the public space.

“Karo-Jisatsu” (suicide induced by overwork) has often been connected to criticisms of Japanese society for its self-sacrificing labor culture and merciless economics. This argument merely repeats the legal and critical discourse of “Karo-Jisatsu” and voids the legal fiction of individuals with a responsibility to be critical of society. Moreover, at the level of practice, neither the cancelling of the fiction nor the issue of social criticism has been pursued. Contrary to the previous seemingly “sociological” explanations, our society neither operates strictly nor abandons easily the modern fiction of “intention”. The sociology of suicide should illuminate the various aspects of the fiction in our society.

Although it is relatively well known that local business owners are active participants in local voluntary activities, we have not had enough opportunities to interpret this phenomenon sociologically. Through a qualitative analysis of one business owners' voluntary association, “Junior Chamber (Seinen-Kaigisho),” and its activity in a local traditional festival, the “Yamakasa” in Iizuka city, this paper reveals both how a local economic network has established a wider civic sensibility and what kind of role it has played in its local community. This shows us the importance of reconsidering the possibility of a form of civic engagement that initially took root in the economic sphere.

Fair trade has been divided into two types; the partnership-type and the certification-type. The purpose of this article is to clarify the fundamental turning point between the two by means of an analysis of the &ldquo;Certified Label Controversy.&rdquo; This controversy has been understood as a conflict between &ldquo;qualitative deepening&rdquo; and &ldquo;quantitative expansion,&rdquo; but this interpretation cannot explain the core of the problem. This article, therefore, presents an alternative interpretation. Here, the point at issue is whether or not commercialism and social justice are compatible. This means that the controversy includes the argument over &ldquo;the formation of orders.&rdquo; In short, this watershed for fair trade arises from a difference of view on the relation between &ldquo;being free&rdquo; and &ldquo;a regard for society.&rdquo;
