In order to develop academic Japanese abilities in students on the Japanese Language Program at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (JLPTUFS), teaching materials based on can-do list are being developed. The can-do list indicates learners' proficiency and skills of academic Japanese. This paper examines how a textbook with a task-based syllabus based on can-do list that we are developing can be applied in a beginners' classroom. In this presentation, we will report the procedure of task-based activities used and discuss the effectiveness of a task-based syllabus.

This report introduces teaching materials to learn collocations of the type which consist of a noun, a particle and a verb. 120 nouns chosen among those of the levels 1 and 2 of the old JLPT are divided into 20 topics. To make a list of collocations for each noun, some verbs with high frequency and variations of use were selected and examples with typical modification are shown. In addition, two kinds of exercise help to check the meaning and the usage of collocations. A blended learning approach using ICT will be developed in the future.

In this study, the author analyzed vocabulary in elementary and junior high school textbooks for children with foreign backgrounds from the perspective of collocations. The types of collocations used in BCCWJ textbooks were surveyed, analyzed. This resulted in the compilation of a "List of collocations and related vocabulary in elementary and junior high school textbooks" by subject. The list includes supplementary information on the meanings of nouns and verbs, context, antonyms and contrary phrases, and common expressions. Finally, based on this list, as a basic pedagogical method, the author created sample assignments and review exercises.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the present status of Japanese language education by focusing on educational policy for Japanese majors in Chinese universities. This issue is getting more attention year by year. The author analyses various types of public data, including educational guidelines and national standards published after the 2000s, to grasp the overall picture on the topic. Following an overview of the development of Japanese majors, this paper shows the diversification of human resources and specialized courses required in recent years.

For this paper, research on the "interpretation" suggested by "-noda" was conducted using Najima (2007) as the theoretical framework. First, a test was conducted on scenes containing "-noka" (-"ndesuka") and "non-noka" ("-masuka") sentences targeting 33 foreign students, and simultaneously, a questionnaire survey was conducted on metacognition of "-noka" and "non-noka" sentences and on teaching methods used. Following this, teaching of "-noka" and "non-noka" sentences was executed using pictorial teaching materials and review exercises. In addition, a follow-up survey was conducted. In this paper, the results of the research are reported and analyzed.

It is essential for Japanese language learners to have sufficient skills to conduct casual conversations with native speakers to develop their language proficiency as well as their personal networks. The analysis of casual conversations in contact situations shows us the reaction to &quotiisashi" ―the suspended sentences or the sentence-ending ellipsis is one of the critical points for the smooth interactions and even a learner in advanced level needs practice to give proper reaction to it.

In this paper, I will examine advanced level learners' thinking process from their talks after completion of the writing task requiring citation along with their works. The purpose is to find clues for effective teaching of citation, one of the necessary skills for academic writing. In a writing class for advanced level learners, I introduced a practice determining whether to use direct citation or indirect citation for several times during the course. The said task was given at the closing hours. First I would examine effectiveness of the practice and then present the clues for further teaching.

In this paper, I analyze how Japanese textbooks for prospective foreign caregivers teach the euphemistic polite expressions which caregivers should use with their patients. In order to obtain a license as a caregiver in Japan, foreigners must pass an exam demonstrating proficiency in the Japanese language. Because foreign caregivers may experience cultural confusion in addressing their patients because of many euphemistic Japanese expressions, textbooks explain the importance of polite ways to express euphemistic issues. Textbooks don't distinguish between ways to speak about technical terms and general ones, this paper focuses on how textbooks teach the euphemistic expression of general terms.

The information about Japan and Japanese people contained in the textbooks has a great influence on Japanese language students' view of Japan. By this point of view, this study has analyzed the influence of the textbooks used in the Japanese language education in the former Manchuria during the Japanese imperialist education. The possibility that the textbooks influenced the students' view of Japan were examined. This study also demonstrates the contents of the Japanese language education during that time, which was not thoroughly imperialistic.

Nagoya University created teaching materials centered on social issues when they became a popular topic in modern Japanese society. These materials aim to foster academic literacy required from international students. This study examines a practice led by teaching materials on "Black baito", and analyzes what kind of dialogic activity and students' interpretation has occurred. The results of the analysis show that students created their own interpretation through the act of redefining the term "Black baito" as part of an explanation activity that entails looking at the working environment from both the employers' and employees' points of view.

The purpose of this paper is to aid teachers who struggle to select topics for debate. Although many books and studies have been published concerning methods of teaching debate, few address methods of topic selection. Nevertheless, this topic is an important factor in determining the success or failure of teaching debate, and therefore must be considered. The researchers interviewed multiple teachers and asked them to describe their methods of topic selection; based on their responses, suggestions are provided to assist teachers in selecting debate topics.

In a Japanese language class for international students, I teach a play in the Kobe dialect with the help of Japanese students. To enhance leaning effect and create a play with higher quality, it is essential for all students to actively take part in all the process. In order to sustain the motivation of all the students for the whole semester, I made each student set individual objectives (assessment points) beforehand, assess them with each other among all the students after the performance day, and the average scores were integrated into part of their grades in the 2011 fall semester.

This research is about difference of rejection phrases in Japanese and Azerbaijan Languages. The difference may occur a misunderstanding among Japanese speakers and Japanese language learners of Azerbaijan. Especially, the reason explanation of rejection plays different role and has different meaning in both languages. This could be an obstacle for Japanese learners during communication with native speakers.

Extensive reading is generally considered as input learning by reading. However, as extensive reading is not believed to enhance a class's comprehensive learning effect unless accompanied with output after reading, ways for extensive reading to lead to output must be considered. Therefore, in this research, an extensive reading class with output is implemented and those results are examined to develop a curriculum design for an extensive reading class. As a result, learners are observed to learn using metacognitive strategies through repeating various output activities. Thus, an extensive reading class with output is assumed to provide a high learning effect to learners.

In this research, I would like to take basic color adjectives in Japanese and clarify differences between foreign words and Japanese words that represent the same color. The following research question were set. When foreign color adjectives and Japanese color adjectives modify nouns, consider what features are seen in each noun. We consider that two color words tend to represent positive images or negative images when modifying an abstract. The method of study analyzes The Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ) As a result, when color terms modify an abstract, they tend to produce negative images.

For effective language education, analysis of the content, order, and amount of material contained in the teaching materials is very important. Having a detailed and quantitative grasp of these, and going on to work out an educational sequence that is based on these data is not only vital for the beginning teacher, but also useful for the more experienced one. In our research, we have made a database of textbooks, and are creating a matrix of teaching items by analyzing their content quantitatively by order, quantity, amount, and how items of each level relate to each other. We then attempt to specify where a learner of Japanese stands at present, and what he should be taught next. In the present paper, we take up the basic thinking of our research, and an analysis of the kanji.

Recently supports for children with developmental disabilities has been improved at educational sites in Japan. On the other hand, it is far from satisfaction in the field of Japanese education for students from abroad. Nevertheless, efforts can be confirmed such as to adjust fonts and sizes of letters and to increase pair or group activities. Authors investigated if these supports are useful for university exchange students. It revealed that their problems are too multifarious to be responded with uniform methods. It is essential to ascertain what they are perplexed by and what kind of supports are required. It is desired to examine and implement effective methods constantly.

In this study, the pronunciation training that a speech therapist performs for a native speaker was adapted to non-native speakers. After being administered a pre-questionnaire survey, five Burmese speakers gave interviews and participated in group training. A post-questionnaire survey revealed the participants were satisfied with their training and found that their pronunciation had improved. Although the number of training sessions conducted were not sufficient to produce natural sounds and correct pronunciations during conversations, it has been shown that this training method can be implemented for non-native speakers.

“Easy Japanese” was created so that foreigners in Japan would have fewer issues with communicating in the event of a disaster. However, while disaster prevention radio broadcasts are an important source of information in disasters, research on such broadcasts from the perspective of “Easy Japanese” has yet to be conducted. In this study, disaster prevention radio broadcasts during the Great East Japan Earthquake were analyzed from this perspective. Based on the results, reconsidering the rules for “Easy Japanese,” and applying them to the rules of disaster prevention radio broadcasts is necessary.

The backchannel 'sodesu-ka' is considered a signal which functions to indicate one's understanding of information. This study examines how a hearer uses 'sodesu-ka' in actual conversations. The data used in this study is from the conversations of the intermediate level learners in KY corpus. The results of this investigation show that the form of 'sodesu-ka' appears with emotional expressions. This implies that 'sodesu-ka' as a backchannel has a function as a communicative strategy. It also has an active function as a procedural device in situations using languages.
