We have applied the teaching of Japanese pronunciation using chunking, posing and 'へ' shaped intonation as an approach that is teachable and learnable. We have already compiled a pronunciation textbook for Japanese beginners and advanced learners and are currently developing teaching material for upper-intermediate learners of Japanese. The upper-intermediate learners have already learnt basic Japanese but need to develop the variation in expression and pronunciation and the ability to use the variation appropriately. Our textbook for the learners, therefore, facilitates the development of learners' pronunciation through various tasks, such as speech and discussion, to acquire the variation in expression and pronunciation. For each task, the learner outcomes are elucidated to both teachers and learners. This paper discusses the process of creating the textbook.

当研究会は、筑波大学日本語教育研究会編「日本語表現文型中級I II」(以下「表文」)の漢字総索引を作成した。「表文」は、中級教科書として広く使われ、版を重ねているが、漢字に関しては各課の語句欄に読み方が示されているにすぎず、現場で指導する者としては、少なからず不便を感じるところである。もとより「表文」は文型・文法指導のための教科書であり、語彙・漢字指導を目的としたものでないことは明らかだが、語彙・表記を離れた文型指導もあり得ない。そこで「表文」の全部の漢字表記の語を調査し、常用漢字表を基準とした漢字総索引を作り、これによって、初出ページ、語形、頻度など各漢字の使用状況が一覧できるようにし、あわせて欄外に常用漢字表にありながら「表文」では不提出の漢字も記した。また、巻末で、この一覧作成により明らかになったいくつかの問題点を考えてみた。

Ehime University provides a Survival Course on three campuses (the Johoku campus, the Faculty of Agriculture campus, and the School of Medicine campus) as part of our support for students who have just arrived in Japan. The course consists of two parts: Language Skills and Life Skills. We have created an original textbook and this year it was revised in order to adjust the contents to each campus. We also added practical sections to raise the level of the students. This presentation will show the revised textbook and report on how it is used in the program.

本研究は,日本語学習の中・上級段階の学習漢字とは何かということを,次の2点から検討したものである。(1)上級段階において生教材として使用されることのある「新書」等5冊を対象に,出現する漢字語彙を抽出し,出現漢字の頻度を調査し,異なり字数・のべ字数・累積字数を調べた。その結果,5冊のテキストには共通する漢字が多いことが分かった。また,各テキスト特有の漢字についてみると,それらの漢字を含む語彙は,各テキストのキーワードを構成していた。(2)中級段階の日本語教科書で取り上げられている学習漢字について調査した。その結果,2冊の日本語教科書の学習漢字は共通しており,かつ,これら学習漢字は(1)で分析したテキストに出現する漢字とのかさなりが多かった。

The language institute of Fukuoka Nihongo Center has been conducting 'Nihon-jijou' classes as ordinal lessons one or two periods a week since starting the institute (February 1989). We have been developing original 'Nihon-jijou' textbook as beginners material with revising for eight years. In 1997 "Let's speak and think on Japan" was published based on the material. This report describes the purpose, structure and contents of the textbook, and further how it is utilized in the actual classrooms, students' reponse and future developments.

Due to the need for a solution to address curriculum design problems, a trial version of a Module Textbook for Japanese Beginners Level 2 has been developed. It has these characteristics: 1) Each lesson consists of a main conversation, grammatical explanations, a vocabulary list, exercises, and either a secondary conversation, a reading or a speech. 2) Each lesson is designed as a module, which makes it possible to select lessons and to change the order of lessons within the curriculum. 3) The software built into the attached CD changes the order of lessons automatically. It would solve course design problems in a small-scale Japanese Language program.

Readability assessment is a useful procedure when writing, editing or selecting texts for weak readers. Tools which have recently been developed for the assessment of Japanese text readability for native speakers are tested on a corpus of Japanese textbooks and found to be only partially applicable to readability assessment for foreign learners. Two factors are measured in the same corpus: average sentence length is found to be a reliable predictor of text difficulty, while character type-token ratio is not as successful.

This study attempted to analyze the function of “nantoka,” which is used to ambiguously verbalize a target, in a Corpus of Everyday Japanese Conversation. The results revealed that “nantoka” has the following three functions; (i) indicating ambiguous aspects, (ii) indicating omissions of information, (iii) being used as a variable. Furthermore, in this study, we highlighted that “nantoka” can constitute an important strategy for learners to continue having interactions in Japanese.

The purpose of this study is to focus on the Japanese language teaching practice in the Japanese language teacher training course at the University, and to manifest what different varieties of practical training are being conducted using the syllabus-based database and KH Coder. As the result, it was common for all the Universities (1) That the students could teach Japanese, and (2) Students also could prepare the teaching materials and lesson plan to teach. Apart from this, each University has its own characteristics.

The following report is a focus of the curriculum for a basic Japanese language course provided to JICA technical training participants. The course is designed to teach fundamental Japanese to assist participants in daily life activities. Due to the high concentration of vocabulary and grammatical principles, participants were overwhelmed with the curriculum content and felt unable to apply the material introduced in class. Therefore, through the results obtain in an in-house survey conducted with the JICA participants, the curriculum was modified to adopt an approach that applied a higher concentration of oral communication activities. As a result, the curriculum modification produced significant positive feedback from both the JICA participants and faculty members.

For international students seeking employment, the job placement test is a major hurdle. One type of question checking non-verbal proficiency question were designed to measure Japanese reading comprehension and so foreign students find them very difficult. The question is whether the problem lies in their reading comprehension or math ability. As a first step to check this, author propose to a test survey of Chinese students using a translation of the original Japanese version of the mathematical questions. Then, we will verify whether the difficulty of the problems is the same in both languages, and whether the order in which the problems are presented has an order effect.

The authors have conducted an activity aimed at creating a video for exchange students in a Japanese language school describing “life as exchange students in Japan.” The purpose of the video is to help with enhancing these exchange students’ language skills and intercultural awareness. The video also aims to encourage Japanese people with whom the video is shared to be interested in foreigners living in Japan. The creators were interviewed twice – once after editing the video, and again after receiving feedback from Japanese people who watched it. The results were that they felt a sense of achievement, especially regarding collaboration with classmates. They were also proud to see that Japanese viewers and exchange students had deepened their willingness to communicate with each other.

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) were developed by Abigail Housen and Phillip Yanawine. VTS is a new concept in the art education field, and it is considered to be an effective tool not only to develop students' artistic ability but also cultivate their critical thinking ability and communication skills. At the VTS session, a facilitator asks students one question, "What's going on in this picture?" The facilitator paraphrases their statements and helps them continue the discussion. This paper discusses the possibility for the application of VTS in Japanese education and a case study to examine it.

A reading comprehension lesson was conducted, which consisted of teams of 2–3 people working together, reading texts, writing summaries, and group presentations. Activities such as reading specified texts, writing summaries, and giving presentations are frequently performed in university classes; however, preparing a summary to explain a text to others requires a deep comprehension of the text in order to reconstruct the content that one has understood. Preparation of summaries as a collaborative learning exercise clarified the activity's learning objectives. Additionally, a higher quality level of peer reading was observed.

This study investigated the explanations of "accent," "intonation," and "prominence" in the introductions for students in popular Japanese textbooks. The results show that; 1) there is very little explanation of pronunciation beyond the word level, e.g. of such areas as "accentuation in connected speech," "intonation," and "prominence;" 2) all textbooks mention "accent," but mostly to distinguish the meanings of words which are homonyms; and 3) there exists quite a range in the number of intonation patterns described, from 2 to 8.

We are currently making the textbook for the pronunciation of Japanese. The textbook contains a list of words that many learners have problems with pronunciation. The voice of learners reading the list was recorded, and then the learners judged their pronunciation by themselves. The result shows that the judgment by some of the learners corresponded to that of the teachers, and the learners are conscious of their pronunciation problems.

In this study, we report the result of a questionnaire survey of advanced students who are in our graduate school on the shitsutsuaru form acquisition. It was found that they made more errors of that form than the sbiteiru form and couldn't understand the criteria of choice between these two forms in the expression of progressive action. The significant correlation between the errors of the shitsutsuaru form and the length of their stay in Japan wasn't found in an examination with the F-test. From all of these pieces of evidence, we need to establish how to teach the shitsutsuaru form effectively in Japanese language classrooms.

We analyze a teacher diary of Japanese-language lessons given to visually-impaired learners, and find differences between teaching for the sighted and that for the visually-impaired. We gave Japanese supplementary classes from April to July 2016 in an educational institution where visually-impaired foreign students were enrolled. We wrote and shared the diary, which shows confusion of the learners seen in the introduction of vocabulary and sentence patterns and in oral practices, and also shows items of learning difficult for the teachers to give explanations. Through the analysis of the diary, this research will make clear the items with difficulties unique to visually-impaired learners and will provide classroom solutions.

University of the Ryukyus held a short-term visit program in January 2021 for foreigners from the Pacific Islands. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the program was successful. This study shows that through the program, participants developed a better understanding of the culture in Japan, especially Okinawa. Furthermore, they displayed keen interest in recommending the program to people back home. This helps in strengthening the bilateral relations of Japan and the Pacific Islands.

This paper shows the difference of" informative " sentences of conversations found in Japanese textbooks as compared to those found in German textbooks. The following eight points about the informer are investigated: 1) identity, 2) sense, 3) activity, 4) possessions, 5) family, 6) organization belonged to her/him, 7) staying area, 8) culture. We conclude from this observation that we can see more information about family and possessions in Japanese textbooks, and that the textbooks written abroad involve information on culture.
