It has been reported that, in the two joint motor link system of the human arm, complicate muscular alignments were simplified into three antagonistic pairs of six muscles including mono- and bi-articular muscles and these six muscle strengths were defined as functionally effective muscular strengths (FEMS), and the output force distribution exerted at the endpoint of the two-joint link system comes hexagonal shape, and further the six FEMS could be estimated based on the hexagonal characteristics of the output force distribution. In this study, it has been revealed that the same relationship between the output force distribution and the FEMS could be seen in the human leg as seen in the human arm, and the leg FEMS could be estimated with the ratio between the physiological cross sectional arias (PCSA) of the antagonistic biarticular leg muscles, because of its very little variation among the previous reports.

This paper proposes a method to improve the accuracy of SLAM in environments with glass by combining LRF and a polarization camera to detect a wide range of glass. Glass confidence of each point detected by the LRF is calculated using the polarization from the polarization camera. The polarization camera acquires the intensity of light passing through the polarizers in four directions. The degree of polarization is calculated from the light intensity of four directions, and is used as the glass confidence. Every time the robot moves, the map and the glass confidence are updated. The robot’s position is estimated using the generated map. Accuracy of the map is improved by considering the glass probability. Improved accuracy of the map also improves the accuracy of self-localization. The accuracy of glass detection was confirmed by the experimental results. The AUC of glass detection was 0.942. As a result, the proposed method was able to produce a more accurate map in the glass area.

Microcutting of AFRM (Alumina Fiber Reinforced Metal) are performed with SEM direct observation method. The purpose of this study is to make clear the cutting mechanism of AFRM and the fracture of fibers at the plastic deformation zone of the orthogonal microcutting. Since AFRM shows an obvious anisotropic strength depending on the direction of fiber axes, cutting direction are classified by the fiber angle. Summary of the results are shown below. (1) The fracture of fibers in microcutting with carbide tool are caused by shearing, tensile and bending forces. (2) In fiber angle 30° and 60°, the direct collision of fibers with cutting edge of tool were observed with high frequency. In these cases, fibers were fractured by the shearing force. (3) In another fiber angles, fibers were fractured by the bending forces after the severe bending deformation. The amount of deformation in fibers became larger in the case of fiber angle 90° and 120° with an extensive overcut. This enhances difficulties in the exhaust of chip and worsens the surface finish. (4) The deformation zone of the orthogonal microcutting with diamond tool was found to decrease by approximately one-half comparing with carbide tool. This can be attributed to the low friction coefficient between the rake face and a sharp edge of the cutting tool. (5) Four typical cutting mechanism have been proposed by the results of the direct observation of microcutting of AFRM.

A 6-DOF articuiated robot (PUMA 560) is calibrated by using a taser tracking system according to the multiple positioning method and the effectiveness of this system is certified. A method which calibrates only angle parameters is newly proposed, since there is a possibility that true values of length parameters are directly measured by some other methods. The relationship between sensibility index and the number of measurement are simulated and it is inferred that 10 random measurements with fixed orientation is enough in case of calibrating only angle parameters and 20 random measurements with random orientation is enough in case of calibrating both angle and length parameters. The combination method which obtains length parameters by the joint axis estimating method and calibrates angle parameters by the multiple positioning method is experimentally developed. The accuracy of the combination method and that of the normal multiple positioning method are experimentally investigated. From the results, the effectiveness of the strategy of how to select parameters, number and pose (position and orientation) of measurement, which is mentioned above, is experimentally confirmed. The accuracy of 0.12mm is achieved in wide area and this value is better than already reported ones about PUMA 560.

The positioning mechanism can be regarded as a simple vibration system with one degree of freedom. Generally speaking, it is difficult to identify the physical parameters of this mechanism without decomposing. In this paper, an identification method of physical parameters for positioning mechanism is described. Firstly it is shown that the viscous damping of slide mechanism can be derived by measuring the frequency response from the collocated sensor to the non-collocated sensor. Moreover, the spring constant between the mechanisms also can be derived more accurately in comparison with the value based on the impulse response. Secondary the equivalent viscous damping is calculated by means of the constant velocity test or the frequency response. Then the viscous damping of rotational mechanism may easily be derived by subtracting the converted viscous damping, which is the value of slide mechanism at the position of motor axis, from the equivalent viscous damping. Finally, the proposed identification method is applied to an actual positioning mechanism.

The present paper deals with possible construction methods of three-dimensional shapes based on the nesting behavior of paper wasps. Paper wasps can construct combs of hexagonal cells with a regular arrangement. This paper describes observation and analysis of such nesting behavior. Observation results show that characteristic movements of antennae and nesting behavior, so called “taxis”, are used in determining how to shape the nest. Construction experiments are conducted to ascertain the relationship between constructed shapes and construction algorithms based on the nesting behavior. The results are as follows : 1. Using base shapes as a guide mark, construction algorithms of threedimensional objects based on the movements of sensors and simple moving rules lead to the construction of similar shapes and different shapes. 2. The movements of antennae and behavior, so called “taxis”, are used in determining how to shape the nest.

An apparatus for the measurement of Young's modulus and its thermal coefficient has been newly developed. Both the tension and bending methods are available in this apparatus. The elongation in the tensile test or the deflection in the three-point bending test is detected by using a specially designed sample holder together with a He-Ne laser interferometer with an accuracy of better than 0.1 μm. This apparatus is especially suitable for such thin specimens as leaf springs and hair springs which are often used in precision machines or measuring instruments. The minimum size of specimen to be measured is 0.1 mm in diameter or 5 μm in thickness. Young's modulus of ordinal materials can be measured with an accuracy of better than ±3% in 95% confidence interval. Young's moduli measured by the tension method and bending method were compared with each other and the result showed a good agreement. Thermal coefficients of Young's modulus of six kinds of spring materials were also measured by means of the bending method in the temperature range between 0°C and 50°C.

Fly-fishing and lure fishing have been positioned as sports deliberately different from the traditional Japanese fishing-style. In the case of lure fishing, casting is the element which anglers must master in order to cast a lure at an appropriate position. Lure fishing constitutes various elements, for example, casting, reeling, hooking and landing, but the importance that casting holds is extremely large. This study uses experimental and computational analysis to investigate the dynamic behavior of lure casting. The casting process and the timing of the line leaves are important for the proper presentation of lure. Moreover, the shape of a rod before the lure released is important for a long cast or controlled cast. However, it is difficult to grasp the phenomenon or to make a numerical model. Therefore, the most suitable casting method will be clarified from the viewpoint of sports engineering and human dynamics. In this paper, the system of rod and lure is modeled, and the behavior of the rod and the flying distance of a lure are calculated in the case that line tension is considered. The difference of the behavior and flying distance with line tension is investigated. And suitable timing that angler releases the line is clarified. Moreover, hang length of lure is investigated and proper length is obtained.

This paper describes the development of a new dry wire electrical discharge machining (dry-WEDM) method which is conducted in a gas atmosphere without using dielectric liquid in order to improve the accuracy of finish cutting. In dry-WEDM, since the process reaction force is negligibly small, the vibration of the wire electrode is minute. The gap distance in dry-WEDM is narrower than that in conventional WEDM using dielectric liquid, enabling dry-WEDM to realize high accuracy in finish cutting. Moreover, since there is no need to use water as dielectric liquid, there is no corrosion of the workpiece, making dry-WEDM advantageous for the manufacturing of high-precision dies and molds.

To realize a small-sized floating-type wave energy converter, a vibrational power generator that utilizes the gyroscopic effect and a geared acceleration is presented. First, equations of motions of the spin accelerating mechanism are derived. Next, it is shown by the numerical analyses that the spinning velocity of the gyro-flywheel is accelerated by the rotating vibration, a steady-state small vibration with the frequency twice the input frequency exists in the flywheel spin, and the generated power is 10 W at the conditions that the flywheel diameter is 600 mm, the weight is 20 kg, the input frequency is 0.2 Hz and the amplitude is ±10 deg. Finally, an experimental apparatus of the spin accelerating mechanism with a flywheel of φ300 mm is developed to show that the experimental and calculated spin and precession velocities agree well.
