Recent innovative research and development of high performance thermoelectric materials for power generation in the temperature range from room temperature up to 1300K has been investigated. The concept of guiding principle for the enhancement of thermoelectric performance was briefly summarized including PGEC materials and independent control of the structure and function. In this paper as some of the promising materials, modified Bi-Te system, (filled) Skutterudites, clathrates and layered oxides were discussed.

A virtual cathode oscillator with a stainless-steel mesh anode of various transparencies and wire diameters was studied experimentally for improvement of microwave power and its repetitive operations. The maximum microwave power was observed to be about 20 MW at 12 GHz for the diode voltage of 250 kV and the electron beam current of 39 kA using the anode mesh with the wire diameter of 0.22 mm and the transparency of 67 %. The microwave emission enhanced with decreasing the wire diameter as the mean beam scattering angle decreased with the smaller wire diameter. Also the increased transparency of fine mesh caused an enhancement of microwave emission. Use of mesh anode allowed us a few repetitive operations.

For the purpose of mitigating carbon dioxide emissions, three renewable energy transportation systems are proposed in which methanol is synthesized by use of wind power generation energy at an oversea and is transported to Japan to be used for a power generation. The proposed systems are the following three systems: (1) wind energy and captured CO2 utilization system, (2) wind energy and coal utilization system, and (3) wind energy and biomass utilization system. The characteristic and cost of the proposed systems’ components such as a wind power generation and a methanol synthesis plants are investigated, and so are the energy and carbon flows of the systems, assuming that the wind power generation plant is constructed at the eastern coast of Russia. Major indicators such as energy efficiency, methanol cost, CO2 reduction cost, etc., of the proposed systems are evaluated together with those of a similar CO2 recycling system utilizing hydraulic power. On the basis of the evaluation results, the wind energy and biomass utilization system is shown to be the most excellent among the evaluated systems from the viewpoints of the CO2 reduction cost. When LNG cost is increased, its estimated CO2 reduction cost islower than that of a CO2 recovery system adopted to a conventional LNG-fired power plant. Consequently, the proposed system is expected to be a feasible option for CO2 reduction in the near future when the wind power generation cost is much decreased.

Freshness evaluation of Ezoshika meat based on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) using LCR meter is carried out to estimate the quality of the meat. An arc is extracted from a locus of measured impedance to evaluate the condition of the meat. It is revealed that freshness of the meat may be estimated from the position of center of the arc. The arcs obtained by two types of equivalent-circuit models and a simple least squares method (LSQ) are compared. It is also found that the arc extracted by the LSQ explains the measured result well.

This study investigated cost-effective energy mix for realizing net zero CO2 emissions in Japan by 2050, employing an energy system optimization model with hourly electricity balances. The detailed temporal resolution enables the model to capture intermittency of variable renewable energy (VRE) and costs of system integration measures. Siting constraints on VRE, such as prohibiting solar PV and onshore wind developments in forest and offshore wind developments inside fishery rights area, are incorporated in the model to reflect the environmental protection and social acceptance perspectives. Simulation results imply that a well-balanced power generation mix, combining renewables, nuclear, gas-fired with carbon capture and storage, as well as ammonia-fired, would contribute to curbing mitigation costs. In contrast, a simulation case with very high VRE penetration poses economic challenges. Average shadow price of electricity in 2050 in a 100% renewables case (RE100) is projected to be more than doubled from a reference case which is based on middle-of-the-road assumptions. Marginal CO2 abatement cost in 2050 increases from 49,200 JPY/tCO2 in the reference case to 75,300 JPY/tCO2 in the RE100 case. The economic viability of high VRE penetration is improved by relaxing the siting constraints, although it may raise environmental and social concerns.

近時送電電壓が高くなり送電系統が複雜になるに從つて故障時に於て故障回路を誤り無く正確に撰擇遮斷することは困難な問題と成つて來た。ことに日本に於ては電信電話線に對する誘導電壓の關係から中性點を高抵抗を以て接地する故送電線に一線接地の起つた場合には完全なる撰擇遮斷は困難で有った。其れ故著者は此の點に關して多少研究を成して現今行はれて居る高電壓送電線にも應用し得る方法を考へ其の二三を述べてある。

Soft coupling is a conceptual system in which two or more train sets on the same railway track can run like one long mechanically coupled train set, with very little space between the adjacent train sets. It is expected to open up possibilities for the realization of highly flexible and improved rail services. However, it is known to be very difficult for two separate train sets in motion to complete soft coupling, i.e., for the distance between these train sets to become zero. In the method we proposed in our previous papers, the time required for the completion may be infinite, because the train set that follows another must run faster when approaching the train set in front. This paper focuses on the method of completing soft coupling within finite time. We show that such a method can be proposed under the following set of preconditions: (1) infrastructure enabling the removal of the conservative safety concept of railway signalling called `brick wall' assumption, (2) simultaneous control of two train sets through a very secure wireless communications link, and (3) high-accuracy control of the deceleration of train sets.

This paper proposes a realization of motion control based on dynamic torque compensation and two-degrees-of-freedom speed control system. In order to suppress the dynamic torque of robot manipulator quickly, this paper constructs the feedforward torque compensation method based on inverse dynamics calculation on each joint control system.Moreover, the proposed joint control system is constructed by the robust control system based on the state feedback, PI speed controller and feedforward controller.The proposed method can suppress the influence of inertia variation and torsional vibration of joint system quickly and completely.The simulation results and experimental results show that the proposed system well regulates the motion of multi-joint robot and suppresses the torsional vibration.

A conventional lecture on Laser Engineering had been done in a lecture room till 1999. A content using on-demand streaming method was made for an online lecture of Laser Engineering in 2000. The figures and equations used on the conventional lecture and the voice recorded for the online lecture were converted to the real media. Then an online lecture has been provided to students by using a Helix Universal Server. The trial of the online lecture was done only for the students who wanted to take the online lecture course in 2000. The online lectures have been recognized as the credits for graduation by the change of a law since 2001. About 100 students have registered the online lecture of Laser Engineering every year since 2001. Here, three years' questionnaire surveys of the online lecture are summarized, and results of examinations on the conventional lecture for two years and on the online lecture for three years are compared. It is recognized for the lecture of Laser Engineering that the educational effect of the online lecture is comparable to or better than that of the conventional lecture.
