This paper considers the improvement of the demagnetization resistance of concentrated winding IPMSMs under high temperature environments by arranging magnets with different magnetic field orientations. The obliquely oriented magnetized magnets to which Halbach array is applied are arranged on the end face of the rotor, thus improving both the magnetic flux density and demagnetization resistance.

A lot of researches on chaos have been made. However, most of them are just investigation using computer simulation, and researches on actual chaotic system is very few. It is well known that double pendulum is a representative chaotic system. This paper deals with an actual handmade double pendulum and stabilize its chaotic motion by the extended OGY method, which we propose. First, by using reconstructed attractor which is a state space to express chaotic time series, the motion of the pendulum is analyzed. Next, the proposed new control method is applied and proved that very small control input can stabilize the system. Finally, it is compared to the disturbance observer method, and shows the superiority of the proposed control method.

An immediate evacuation is essential for safety when a big earthquake and a tsunami occurred. For example, Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 killed over 10 thousand people and over 90 percent of them drowned by the tsunami, that is, people who failed to escape from the tsunami after the earthquake occurred got losses by it. If they evacuated immediately after an earthquake, it would be possible that the losses could be limited. In this study, we analysis text-based information expression on a mobile device to induce immediate evacuation. We implemented an application which provides disaster information on a smartphone, and compare text expression about information of tsunami height, arrival time of tsunami, an expected number of evacuees, damage of buildings and so on. The results of the comparison verification show the sentence based on damage of building using fear-arousing communication is the most effective to induce evacuation in this study. However, in over seventies, the effectiveness of the sentence is less than half.

GPS is widely used to obtain not only the position information but also the time information. Specially, it is used to synchronize the time between separate stations in the measurement system or the communications system. However, in these systems, the output circuit of the 1PPS signal in the GPS receiver has not been optimized. In this paper, we examine the error sources of the time measurement by GPS and show the time measurement accuracy is about 10 ns, and the improvement of the precision of 1PPS signal is most important to realize high accurate 1PPS signal. We propose the precise 1PPS generating method by the analog circuit whose output precision is sufficiently higher than the time measurement accuracy by GPS. We evaluated the time measurement accuracy and the accuracy of 1PPS signal in the relative time synchronization by 24 hours test, and succeeded to realize a few ns precision and several ns accuracy of 1PPS signal in the relative time synchronization using our precise 1PPS generating method.

This paper proposes a new torque-sensorless ripple-reduction torque control method for synchronous reluctance motors, which evolve torque ripples depending on the rotor position by the sinusoidal stator current. The proposed method, which requests the construction of a vector control system with a special command converter, has the following attractive features. (a) The average evolved torque matches its torque command. (b) The torque ripple can be considerably reduced. (c) The current command generated from the torque command is on the trajectory for efficient drives. (d) It is analytical and simple. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through extensive simulations.

This paper presents a new type of axial gap motor, called the flux-modulating hybrid field motor (FHM). For flux modulation, the FHM has rotor iron pieces sandwiched between two stators, the armature and field poles. The field poles comprise permanent magnets and electromagnets, and the magnetic flux of the electromagnets can be adjusted by changing the field current. To validate the principle of this FHM, a 0.8-kW prototype machine was fabricated, and the basic characteristics of the prototype machine were investigated through experiments and three-dimensional finite element analysis. The results show that the torque can be varied in a wider range by changing the armature current vector and field current.

This paper reports an actuation method of MEMS chiral metamaterial that transforms a two-dimensional MEMS spiral with diameter 150 µm to a three-dimensional spiral by individually pulling the center of spirals. The spiral dimension was designed to work in THz electromagnetic frequency. MEMS spirals were manufactured by bonding the central part of spirals and a Si wafer with Parylene bonding, and were deformed by lifting the Si wafer. It was confirmed that spirals were stably pulled by amplitude of 60 µm at the maximum by relatively separating the spiral and the Si wafer.

Flicker may be caused by “frequency feedback method with step injection of reactive power” installed in PCS which is generally used as grid-connected inverter in Japan. Therefore, in this paper, characteristics of the flicker were investigated by experiments with actual PCS in single phase circuit. Furthermore, effective means for suppressing the flicker was considered by taking the cause of occurrence of flicker into account. Moreover, it was clarified the differences among PCSs on flicker using multiple actual PCSs. In conclusion, gain of frequency feedback function should be reduced as one of effective means to avoid flicker.

An analysis between the atmospheric state change and lightning discharges in the autumn (from Sep to Nov. 2011 and 2016) seasons in Japan is presented in this paper. In evaluating the number of lightning activities, we calculated SSI which is used to predict thunderstorms. We confirmed that the modified SSI for the winter season can be effective for evaluating the lighting activities in the autumn season, meaning that the lighting discharges in this season tend to be affected by the low-level atmospheric state condition.
