東北大學に於て八木教授御指導のもとに爲されて居る、短波長ビームに關する實驗の第一報告である。波長4.4米の特別短波長電波を發生し、最初發振器自身に依つて作られる周圍の電界の強さの分布状態を實驗的に研究した結果を擧げ、かゝる發振器に依る電界はすでに指向性を有する事を述べてある。適當な長さの一本の金屬棒は之を發振器の近くに置くのみで、空中線即ちラデェーターとしての作用の顯著である事、次に空中線として用ひた、かゝる金屬棒が、種々な位置に水平に或は垂直に配置された各合に夫々發振器周圍の電界の強さや分布の状態に及す効果を調べてある。最後に三本のかゝる空中線を使用し、之等を適當に發振器に取附け、全體の装置を容易に持ち運び得るやうにし、至極簡單に單一方向性電波を實現する方法の一例を示してある。

We have succeeded in developing a capacitive 6-axis force sensor that can singly detect 3-axis force and 3-axis moment. The capacitive 6-axis force sensor has an advantage of being able to realize high accuracy at low cost compared with conventional sensors using strain gauges. This paper details the sensor structure, detection principle, and detection circuit, as well as the performance, such as sensitivity, cross-axis sensitivity, and linearity of the capacitive 6-axis force sensor.

This paper proposes a linear PFC regulator with a light flicker compensating circuit for LED lighting applications. The proposed circuit is small in size because it includes no reactors or electrolytic capacitors. The light flicker compensating circuit, which is connected in parallel to the LED string, consists of four ceramic capacitors and diodes. These capacitors are operated in series in the charge state and in parallel in the discharge state by using a diode network circuit. Therefore, an external controller and large capacitors are not required. The proposed circuit is experimentally validated using a 9W prototype. From the experimental results, it is found that the power fluctuation of the LED string is less than the JIS and JLMA limitations, and the power factor is 0.95. In addition, the power loss is analyzed at an efficiency of 89.4% for the prototype circuit. Also, by modulating the current regulator, sinusoidal input current can be achieved. The second proposed circuit is experimentally validated using a 7.5W prototype, and the power factor and input current distortion are found to be 0.999 and 2.1%, respectively.

Recently, the spread of Web cameras has facilitated video-conferencing as a means of communication. Since a Web camera is usually located outside the display while the user looks at his/her partner in the display, there is a problem that they cannot establish eye contact with each other. Various methods have been proposed to solve this problem, but most of them required specific sensors, and robust and accurate feature extraction for various appearances to densely associate facial feature points of the images. In this paper, we propose a method that transforms the eye areas to synthesize eye contact using a single camera that is commonly implemented in laptop computers. Concretely, we implemented a system which transforms the user's eye areas in an image to his/her eye image with a straight gaze to the camera only when the user's gaze falls in a range that the partner would perceive eye contact. We then confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of accuracy of the gaze area classification, subjective evaluation score for eye contact, and accuracy of eye contact through experiments.

Study of the electric self-potential (SP) and the magnetic field was conducted at the explosion seismic experiment in Ooyama, Toyama Prefecture. The explosion was induced by 450 kg gun powder placed at a depth of 32.2-75 m. The SP was measured by four electrodes arranged in a line crossing the explosion point, where the distance of each electrode from the explosion ranged from 10 to 100 m. Induced SP changes consisted of two portions, namely, fluctuations with shorter periods (∼10 ms) and fluctuations with longer periods (∼50 ms). Regarding the latter, the amplitude was in proportion to the span length of electrode couples and the fluctuations arrived faster at the electrode couples nearer to the explosion. Further, the increment of ground level in SP was observed in each electrode couple after the explosion, which was concordant with the distribution of apparent resistivity underground studied by the survey. The magnetic field measured by the fluxgate magnetometer at the site 35 m north from the explosion also showed change of a few nT after the explosion. This may have been caused by change of magnetic properties underground.

We have developed novel mathematical models of d-axis and q-axis magnetic fluxes ϕd and ϕq for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The models can be used to approximate magnetic characteristics using simple fractional equations with id and iq as variables. They include eight constants, and some of them represent the degree of magnetic saturation and cross-coupling. However, the magnetic characteristics are varied with the temperature rise in PMSMs, which are dependent on the load torque and motor speed. In this paper, the characteristics of the eight constants that vary with the motor temperature and the residual flux density Br are shown. Further, we propose to extend the mathematical models by considering the temperature and Br variation.

A control system which improves playability of optical disk drives is proposed. The system estimates the state variables such as a sensor-less disturbance observer and feeds them back to the controller. This approach improved control performance toward the defects on the optical disk by the feedback control of the estimated velocity. Furthermore, the influence of an acceleration disturbance to act on the drive and the influence of acceleration caused by physical distortion of the optical disk are suppressed by the feedback control of the estimated disturbance. It is proved that, by applying this control system to the tracking servo system of CD players, the control errors against the acceleration disturbance and the radial run-out of the disk were eliminated and that, as a result, abnormal sound skips never occurred on the defective disks. This control system is one of the key technology toward the realization of the high density optical disk drives.

Switching theory was developed as a theory for relay circuits in early days. In September 1935 Akira Nakashima of NEC delivered his invited speech on synthesis theory of relay networks including de Morgan’s theorem at the technical meeting of the Telegraph and Telephone Society in Tokyo. Since 1934 he had published his ideas in a series of papers “Theory and practice of relay circuits." Akira Nakashima and Masao Hanzawa formulated the design method for switching networks by using algebra in 1936. This is the first paper on switching theory that was applied to the analysis of digital circuits. It was in 1938 that the paper on switching theory was published by Claude E. Shannon. Following Nakashima’s research Kan-ichi Ohashi, Mochinori Goto and Yasuo Komamiya of Electrotechnical Laboratory (ETL) extended the theory to apply to sequential circuits.

It is desired to detect stenosis at an early stage to use hemodailysis shunt for longer time. Stethoscope auscultation of vascular murmurs is useful noninvasive diagnostic approach, but an experienced expert operator is necessary. Some experts often say that the high-pitch murmurs exist if the shunt becomes stenosed, and some studies report that there are some features detected at high frequency by time-frequency analysis. However, some of the murmurs are difficult to detect, and the final judgment is difficult. This study proposes a new diagnosis support system to screen stenosis by using vascular murmurs. The system is performed using artificial neural networks (ANN) with the analyzed frequency data by maximum entropy method (MEM). The author recorded vascular murmurs both before percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and after. Examining the MEM spectral characteristics of the high-pitch stenosis murmurs, three features could be classified, which covered 85 percent of stenosis vascular murmurs. The features were learnt by the ANN, and judged. As a result, a percentage of judging the classified stenosis murmurs was 100%, and that of normal was 86%.

The number of dialysis patients is approximately 300,000 and is increasing every year in Japan. A renal failure patient requires a hemodialysis shunt for dialysis to be performed; however, the blood vessels around the hemodialysis shunt may become stenosed. The stethoscope auscultation of vascular murmurs has some use in the assessment of access patency; however, this diagnostic approach is skill dependent. Therefore, a diagnostic support system to detect stenosis is desirable. We developed an auscultating diagnosis support system for assessing hemodialysis shunt stenosis by using a self-organizing map (SOM) and short-time maximum entropy method. In this paper, for the purpose of improving the accuracy of stenosis detection, the Mel-frequency cepstrum coefficient (MFCC)-based hidden Markov model (HMM) was also used. As a result, a high correlation between an SOM system and HMM system was found. Therefore, the credibility of the each system was confirmed. Furthermore, the results indicated that the accuracy of stenosis detection could be improved by combining the SOM and HMM methods.

Japan modernization was very rapidly promoted about 200 years ago. Before that time Japan had national isolation policy but the emperor at that time and the worrier who led society realized that Japan should develop quickly to compete with the US and European countries.Compared with other power stations, the construction of the Keage Hydroelectric Power Station was somewhat delayed, but it was achieved during the development of the Biwako Sosui (Lake Biwa Canal) Project and was the first hydroelectric power generation station for public service in Japan. We can see the history of the development of technology in the world by looking at Keage as it sequentially adopted new technology during its construction.
