Sometimes, we discriminate “sex differences” from “gender differences” implying that there are two types of differences between women and men: biologically based sex differences and socially constructed gender differences. One may even imply that biologically based sex differences are more “innate” and more difficult to change. In this article, I will argue that biological sex differences are not genetically determined. Rather, biological sex differences are products of genetic, ecological, and social influences. Organisms flexibly and adaptively change their sexual behavior to meet their environmental requirements. More importantly, theoretical biology has produced many hypotheses on how individual organisms adjust their behavior according to both ecological and social environmental changes. Those theories are testable on human behavior and will bring significant insights to “gender” difference studies.

<p>Quantitative studies and process models of narrative persuasion published since 2000 were reviewed in order to identify influences of narratives on readers' attitudes that result from changes in thinking and affect. Firstly, characteristics of narrative persuasion research were briefly introduced by summarizing definitions of narratives and attitudes, and by illustrating typical methodologies of narrative persuasion research. Secondly, theories on the process of narrative persuasion and narrative experiences were reviewed. These models were then integrated and the process of narrative persuasion was categorized into thinking and affective routes, and each process was explained with reference to supportive studies. It was suggested that the affective route currently has stronger empirical support than the thinking route. Finally, topics for future research were suggested, which include closely examining each process, improving methodologies, and comprehensively investigating relationships between narrative persuasions and narrative experiences.</p>

When reading narratives, readers may have various experiences such as focused attention on reading activity, vivid images of the narrative world. and/or empathy with the characters in the narratives. Many theorists and researchers have suggested the existence of these experiences and have referred to them as absorption, engagement, or transportation. However, these constructs differ widely in what experiences each concept indicates. Furthermore, it is unclear what roles these narrative experiences play in the reading process. In this paper, we first reviewed the literature on these narrative experiences and conceptualized them as immersion in the narrative world. which comprises six homogeneous subgroups of experience. Next, to discuss the function of the immersion in narrative reading, two theoretical models of narrative immersion in the reading process were examined. Finally, we proposed a narrative immersion-reading model and suggested future directions for the studies on narrative reading, especially on embodied cognition, the situation model in narrative comprehension. and the effect of narrative reading on social abilities.

Until now, various types of threshold and signal-detection models have been proposed. These models have broadly different assumptions on recognition memory mechanisms, and thus predict different patterns of Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROCs). Assessing the models for their flexibility and goodness of fit to empirical ROC data provides evidence on which model has more concise description on the phenomenon of recognition memory and may provide a better understanding of it. I have illustrated the structures and properties of various recognition memory models with their relation to a dual process theory in mind. Then, I have summarized the basics and recent developments of model selection methods. Further, I have explained the pragmatic use of these measurement models, using several examples of empirical studies on different research topics.

When interacting with others, the indoor physical environment influences interpersonal cognition and behavior explicitly as well as implicitly. Several studies in the field of traditional environmental psychology have focused on explicit processes such as pleasure, arousal, and stress. Additionally, some models of interpersonal cognition and behavior have been proposed. In recent years, more studies have been focusing on implicit social cognition. Furthermore, embodied cognition and the automaticity of social cognition are the major topics studied in this field. However, the implicit psychological influences of the indoor physical environment on interpersonal relationships are still unclear. In this paper, we first review the literature on the implicit influence of the indoor physical environment on interpersonal cognition from the perspective of the quantity and quality of physical factors, and that of the evaluation methods of implicit processes. We then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the research methods used to study the implicit processes indicated by behaviors, subjective evaluations, and response time. Finally, we reveal the significance of and problems in the study of the implicit influence of the indoor physical environment.
