The sea cucumber, Holothuria (Cystipus) dura Cherbonnier and Féral, 1981, previously known only from the Philippines and New Caledonia, is newly recorded from Japanese waters; this is also the first record of the subgenus Cystipus from Japan. The two specimens described here were collected from the sublittoral bottoms near Hahajima island (126–261 m depth) and Okinoshima island (100–120 m depth). The morphology of the Japanese specimens is briefly described. In-situ photographs of the living individuals and scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of ossicles are provided for the first time for this species. The table ossicles in the dorsal body and in the papillae are highly modified fenestrated spheroids that have not been depicted previously. Some of the ventrolateral conical papillae, especially those in the middle part of the body, were bifurcated, perhaps indicative of increased surface area against the bottom for powerful propulsion while ‘walking’. Some notes on locomotion are given, inferred from the in-situ photographs and the morphology of the ventrolateral conical papillae.

Pycnogonids of the species Ammothea hilgendorfi (Bohm, 1879) were found attached to sea-stars, Coscinasterias acutispina (Stimpson, 1882), from the intertidal zone of Hayama, Sagami Bay, Japan. The sea-stars were collected throughout the year, but the pycnogonids were found only between March and August, mostly in April. The pycnogonids attached to the body surface of the sea-stars mainly by clinging to spines of the aboral and lateral sides of the arms. Developmental stages of the pycnogonids attached to the sea-stars comprised the four final juvenile stages as well as adults, but earlier juvenile stages were not found.

The freshwater heteronemertean Apatronemertes albimaculosa Wilfert and Gibson, 1974 has previously been reported from Germany, Austria, and the USA. All these records were from aquarium tanks with commercially distributed tropical and/or subtropical water plants; by hiding among their roots, the worms are thought to have been introduced from an unidentified place of origin. We report the occurrence of A. albimaculosa for the first time from Japan, based on specimens found in private home aquaria for guppy breeding, with a total of 18 species of water plants grown for different periods and lengths of time but not all at the same time. Histological examination confirmed the presence of diagnostic features of this species, including a complex precerebral vascular system and hermaphroditism. The partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (607 bp) of the Japanese material is identical with that of a heteronemertean specimen from a freshwater tank in Madrid, Spain, which had been deposited in the public databases but left unidentified as to its species, genus, or family. Apatronemertes albimaculosa appears unlikely to be able to survive below 10°C for more than about a week, which suggests that its native locality is in the tropics or subtropics, not the temperate zone. The barcoding sequence herein determined will serve in future studies to help locate the natural place of origin.

About 130 years has passed since L. Koch (1878) published the first paper on Japanese spiders. Today there are still many undescribed species in Japan. Based on papers published in the journal of the Arachnological Society of Japan during the last five years, three professional and six amateur researchers are now actively studying the taxonomy of Japanese spiders. Most of their publications are descriptive studies, e.g. description of new species, revision of a genus or a family. Phylogenetic analyses using morphological or molecular data have been published for many countries, but not for Japan. It is becoming increasingly urgent to foster young spider taxonomists. The traditional approach in taxonomy seems to be arbitrary and therefore not attractive for young researchers. Japanese leading taxonomists should adopt modern methods such as phylogenetic analyses in order to attract young successors.

An octannulate Orobdella leech, Orobdella octonaria Oka, 1895, is redescribed on the basis of one syntype collected from Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, and two newly obtained specimens, also from Hakone. It is distinguished from the other known species of Orobdella by its octannulate mid-body somites. No holotype of this species was originally designated. The present syntype from Hakone is designated as the lectotype of O. octonaria for the purpose of clarifying its taxonomic status and type locality.

In Japan, 111 species (including 11 unidentified taxa) of epicaridean isopods have so far been recorded. All species are parasites, infesting various crustacean hosts, such as Decapoda, Ostracoda, Cirripedia, Mysidacea, and etc. Their larvae are known from ectoparasites of pelagic copepods. In the present paper, 121 species of crustacean hosts of epicaridean isopods are listed (1 species of Ostracoda, 8 of Copepoda, 1 of Balanomorpha, 1 of Rhizochephala, 2 of Mysidacea, 11 of Penaeidea, 33 of Caridea, 1 of Astacidea, 5 of Thalassinidea, 27 of Anomura, 30 of Brachyura, and 1 of unknown taxa).

端脚目,ヒメハマトビムシOrchestia platensis KROYERの胸部第7節背面に見られる斑紋が,4種の基本的斑紋型に分類された。斑紋の安定性を調べるため,長期間にわたって飼育観察が行われた結果,第一斑紋型は一貫して安定性を保つこと,また他の3種の斑紋型は,ときに相互移行をすることが明らかにされた。さらに,種内構造の分析の一端として,4種の斑紋型について第2触角の基部末端節と鞭状部の長さが測定され,両者の相対関係が各斑紋型の間で比較された。その結果,雌雄共に第1斑紋型と他の3種の斑紋型の間には,第2触角の相対成長に関しても明らかに相違が見られた。しかし,後者すなわち他の3種の斑紋型の間でははっきりした違いを見い出すことができなかった。これらの結果は,曰本の海浜に生息するヒメハマトビムシ個休群は,少なくとも二つの異なる形態型からなっていることを示唆するものと思われる。

日本を含めて,旧北区東部に分布するヒメギス類についての再検討を試みた.本研究では従来Metriopteraの亜属のひとつとして扱われていたEobianaを独立属と認めた.この属にはE.japonica(イブキヒメギス)とE.engelhardtiの2種が属し,後者にはシベリアなどに分布するengelhardti(シベリアヒメギス:新称)と日本に分布するsubtropica(ヒメギス)の2亜種があり,これら属,種,亜種の再記載を行った.この結果,日本で用いられたMetrioptera hime FURUKAWA,1950は,Eobiana engelhardti subtropica BEY-BIENKO,1949となる.

Echinoderms display a great range of life histories, which my students, colleagues, and I have documented though our studies of 42 species, including one echinoid, one holothuroid, four ophiuroids, and 36 asteroids. Here, the general features of echinoderm reproduction are reviewed as they concern the following topics: pairing behavior, brooding, sexual dimorphism, dioecism/hermaphroditism, and others. Larval form in these echinoderms has been modified in various ways through adaptation to planktonic, benthic, intra-gonadal, or intra-gastric larval habitats. The elucidation by Kanatani of the hormonal control mechanism of reproduction in asteroids has provided a means to investigate various aspects of their life history in detail, especially in the genera Asterina, Astropecten, and Luidia. We have found asteroids that pass through a wrinkled blastula stage, divergences among species of Asterina and Astropectinidae, astropectinid sea stars with a newly discovered barrel-shaped larva, and the limits of occurrence of the non-brachiolarian type of development in the Astropectinidae and Luidiidae. The life history of astropectinid species, including both a bipinnaria and a barrel-shaped larva, differs from that of luiidiids, with only a bipinnaria. On this basis, we suggest that the Astropectinidae and Luidiidae probably do not belong to the same ordinal-level taxonomic group. This result agrees with the 18S rDNA-based asteroid phylogeny previously reported by Matsubara and us.

四国の室戸岬の最御崎寺(ほつみさきでら)にはホソバカナワラビ-スダジイ群集の森がよい状態で保存されており,その林床に堆積した落葉落枝の中からササラダニ類の3新種,すなわちムロトツヤタマゴダニ(新称)Liacarus murotensis,シコクツブダニ(新称)Oppiella articristata,マルガオフリソデダニ(新称)Neoribates pallidus,が採集されたので命名記載した.

The four extant horseshoe crabs are morphologically so similar to fossil specimens of the genus Mesolimulus that one has referred to them as "living fossils". The recent horseshoe crabs are assigned to two subfamilies, that is, Limulinae and Tachypleinae. The Limulinae includes only one American species, Limulus polyphemus and the Tachypleinae includes three Asian species, Tachypleus tridentatus, T. gigas and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda. The hybridization experiments revealed that the fertilization could not be accomplished between Limulus and Asian species gametes, while three Asian horseshoe crabs were cross-fertilizable one another. Developmental capacity of hybridized eggs among the three Asian species was not equivalent, suggesting that one had rather not assign three Asian horseshoe crabs to such two diverse genera as Tachypleus and Carcinoscorpius in the current taxonomy. These results are in concord with the idea that American and Asian horseshoe crabs diverged from a common European ancestor (or separate ancestral species) and that the three extant Asian horseshoe crabs diverged from a common Asian ancestor.

About 100 individuals of Pogonophora were collected from Sagami-nada, in 1115 to 1830m, by "Tansei Maru" of the Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo. At least five species are recognized, but they are not yet determined specifically.

1979年9月,埼玉県川越市東部の農業用水地,伊佐沼において,淡水産肛動物(曲形動物)Uramatella gracilis LEIDYを採集した。これは日本最初の発見である。U. gracilisは排水路の流水中に多く生息し,コンクリート壁に付着する淡水海綿の表面やオオタニシの殻,マコモの葉鞘に好んで着生する。暗い陰の方を好む。U. gracilisはヨワカイメンSpongilla fragilis LEIDYおよびヤハズハネコケムシPlumatella emarginate ALLMANと共存することが多い。U. gracilisは高さ1.5〜2.0MMでJ.LEIDYの記述より小さく,R. V. SESIIAIYAの記載した

1991年2月23〜27日の間に韓国南部の4箇所の廃坑を調査した結果,Rhinolophus ferrumeqnum korai,Myotis macrodactylus,M.mystacinus,M.formosusおよびPipistrellus corensisの生息が確認された.これらのコウモリの中でR.ferrumequi num koraiにのみVampirolepis hidaensisが寄生していた.V.hidaensisは済州島のR.ferrumequinum quelpartis,日本のR.ferrumequinum nippon,Miniopterus schreibersii fuliginosus,およびM.s.blepotisにも寄生している.こうした条虫相からみると韓国のキクガシラコウモリは日本のキクガシラコウモリと地理的分布からみて関連性が濃いように考えられる.
