<p>Two specimens (67.5–75.1 mm standard length; SL) of <i>Plectranthias maekawa</i> Wada, Senou and Motomura 2018 (Serranidae: Anthiadinae), previously recorded only the Tokara Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, were collected from Okinawa-jima and Yonaguni-jima islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The present specimens, described herein in detail, represent the first records of the species from Okinawa Prefecture. Although the body depth (% of SL) has been regarded as one of diagnostic characters between <i>P</i>. <i>maekawa</i> and two closely-related congeners (<i>Plectranthias helenae</i> Randall, 1980 and <i>Plectranthias wheeleri</i> Randall, 1980) in the original description of <i>P</i>. <i>maekawa</i>, that of the present new specimens was overlapped with the latter two species (viz., 33.5–37.7% of SL in <i>P</i>. <i>maekawa</i>, 35.5–38.7% SL in <i>P</i>. <i>helenae</i>, and 35.6–37.9% of SL in <i>P</i>. <i>wheeleri</i>). The number of serration on the margins of subopercle and interopercle in <i>P</i>. <i>wheeleri</i> and <i>P</i>. <i>maekawa</i> has also been regarded as a diagnostic character for the two species, but additional specimens described in this study showed that the number of serration changed ontogenetically, and it overlapped in the similar-sized specimens of the two species. However, the validities of other diagnostic characters given in the original description of <i>P</i>. <i>maekawa</i> are reconfirmed in this study (viz., number of pectoral-fin rays, scales on above and below lateral line, morphometrics of body width, head length, third dorsal-fin spine length, caudal-peduncle length and depth, and both coloration of fresh and preserved conditions). In addition, three specimens of <i>P</i>. <i>wheeleri</i> (71.3–83.7 mm SL) from the Okinawa Islands, are reported here as the first records of the species from Okinawa Prefecture; it has been previously recorded from Japan (Sagami Bay, and Tokara and Amami islands), Taiwan, Indonesia, and Australasia.</p>

A single specimen of a carangid fish, Alepes kleinii (125.1mm in standard length), was collected by a small set net at depths shallower than 8m off the northeastern Kadogawa Bay, Kadogawa-cho, Miyazaki Prefecture, Pacific coast of Kyushu Island, Japan. Alepes kleinii is distinguishable from its congeners by the following combination of characters: two rows of small conical teeth arranged irregularly in a narrow band on upper jaw but those on lower jaw in a single series, a diffuse dusky blotch present on upper margin of opercle, and straight part of lateral line starting behind below origin of second dorsal fin. The specimen represents the reliable record of the species from Japan.

Two yellowish damselfishes (Perciformes: Pomacentridae), Chromis analis (Cuvier in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1830) and C. xouthos Allen and Erdmann, 2005, were confirmed to be distributed in Japanese waters on the basis of collected specimens and underwater photographs. Detailed comparisons of the two species are given in this study, with assessments of standard Japanese names for the two. New standard Japanese name, “Tampopo-suzumedai”, is herein proposed for C. analis.

Specimens of scyllarine species (Decapoda: Scyllaridae: Scyllarinae) were collected using commercial bottom trawl nets from several sites with 50-100 m depths in the shelf water region of the Enshu-nada sea and Tosa Bay along the Pacific coast of Honshu, central Japan. Of these, Bathyarctus chani Hoithuis, 2002 and B. formosasus (Chan and Yu, 1992) are recorded for the first time from Japan while Eduarctus martensii (Preffer, 1881) and Galearctus timidus (Hoithuis, 1960) are poorly known from Japanese waters previously.

An overview of "scorpaeniform" fish phylogenetic studies is presented. Imamura and Shinohara (1998) reviewed previous phylogenetic studies of the "Scorpaeniformes" and stated that monophyly was unlikely. Since 1998, 4 papers (1 morphological and 3 molecular) have been published, which independently show the polyphyletic origins of this group. The present paper provides an outline of Imamura and Shinohara's (1998) paper, and gives summaries of the 4 subsequent papers. Evidence for polyphyly presented in the 4 papers is discussed. Suggestions for future areas of "scorpaeniform" taxonomic and evolutionary research are presented.

Ten carangid specimens belonging to the genus Selar, collected by small set net at Kadogawa Bay, Miyazaki Prefecture (eastern coast of Kyushu Island), Japan, were identified as Selar boops (Cuvier in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1833), on the basis of scales in curved part of lateral line 22-24 and chord of the curved part of lateral line 2.2-2.7 times in straight part. These specimens represent first record of the species from Japan. Specimens are described and a new Japanese name "Teru-meaji" is proposed for the species.

The scale worm Hesperonoe hwanghaiensis Uschakov and Wu, 1959 (Annelida: Polynoidae) is recorded from eastern Japan, based on four specimens collected from Akkeshi Bay, Hokkaido, and Kashima-nada, Ibaraki Prefecture. In Akkeshi Bay, three specimens (body length of a complete specimen: 40 mm, body width without parapodia: 4.0–4.5 mm), which are the largest of all Japanese specimens including previous records, were found from mud and sand sediments at intertidal flats, where a mud shrimp Upogebia major (De Haan, 1841) was collected simultaneously. In Kashima-nada, a complete mature male specimen (body length: 23 mm, body width without parapodia: 2.7 mm) was collected by dredging at subtidal sandy bottom at a water depth of 7.6 m, where another mud shrimp Austinogebia narutensis (Sakai, 1986) was collected simultaneously. The morphological characteristics of these specimens basically agreed with those of the previous records on the specimens collected from western Japan, with a diagnostic characteristic of the presence of a row of the more conical macrotubercles (up to 28 in an elytron of the complete specimen from Akkeshi Bay, and up to 3 in that from Kashima-nada) on the posterior surface of the elytra in the larger specimen. The present result suggests that the scale worm is commensal with not only U. major but also A. narutensis in its habitats extending from intertidal flats in semi-enclosed inner bays to subtidal bottom in open coasts.
