In this study, a survey was conducted concerning the use of rear-seat belts, which had been made obligatory by the Road Traffic Law of 2008. The research involved a longitudinal study using five points in time, from before the use of rear-seat belts became obligatory until the 2010 crackdown on failure to use them. Rates of use of rear-seat belts and awareness of their importance (risk estimation) were both raised after the law went into effect. For all items, the main effects were seen by seat position, and for two items by period.

This study examined two aspects of social norms, and investigated illegal crossing behavior at an intersection. Two norms were focused upon: the injunctive norm, i.e. to wait during a red light; and the descriptive norm, i.e. to be influenced by the behavior of surrounding people. Study 1 was a natural observation of 56 persons and 50 groups as they passed by an intersection. Study 2 looked at three kinds of descriptive norms derived from Study 1, and 183 persons who passed an intersection were questioned about their crossing behavior. Results showed that: 1) Most people were influenced by a norm manifested within a particular situation; 2) The particular intersection in question was itself inductive of illegal crossing; 3) Males were more prone to ignore the red light than females. This study suggested that the behavior of surrounding people is a strong predictor of pedestrian crossing behavior, and the importance of descriptive norms was confirmed.

本研究は, 社会規範からの逸脱行動に対する違反抑止メッセージについて, 以下の5タイプのメッセージ効果について検討した。(1) ここは駐輪禁止。(2) ここは駐輪厳禁。(3) ここに駐輪すると後の人も続くので, 自転車を止めないで下さい。(4) ここに駐輪すると通行の邪魔です。自転車を止めないで下さい。(5) ここに駐輪した場合, 自転車を撤去します。自転車を止めないで下さい。本研究は, 大学構内での駐輪違反に着目し, 3つの実験を実施した。実験1では, 2つの看板を3メートル間隔で設置したが, 看板の間に自転車が駐輪されていないことが強く影響して, 誰も駐輪をしなかった。実験2では, 1, 2台の自転車をあらかじめ駐輪させ, 逸脱者の存在を顕示した。その結果, 制裁を提示したメッセージに大きな効果が見られた。その他のメッセージでは, 約半数がメッセージに従い, 自転車を別の場所に移動した。実験3では, 多数の逸脱者が存在していることを, 5台の自転車を置いておくことで顕示させ, メッセージの効果を検討した。その結果, 制裁提示のメッセージ効果がなくなり, 全てのメッセージにおいて, 約半数が別の場所に自転車を移動させた。

Social annoyance was defined as any behavior which may bother, annoy, or irritate others, usually occurring between strangers. Social annoyance is aimed solely toward fulfilling one's own personal needs, at the sacrifice of inconveniencing others. This series of studies investigated social annoyance from a cognitive perspective. Study I examined the concept through three surveys. In Surveys 1 and 2,undergraduates (N=672) responded to questionnaires which included items which dealt with their attitudes toward social annoyance. These questionnaires consisted of attitude ratings of 120 annoying behaviors, along with various personality scales (e.g., Locus of Control (Kanbara et al, 1982), Social Consciousness (Wada & Kuze, 1990)). Factor analysis of the 120 behaviors revealed two factors, labeled "deviation from rules and manners", and "inconveniencing others." These attitudes showed positive correlations with the personality variables of "respect for norms", "philanthropic values" and "moral values". Survey 3 involved undergraduates (N=417) who responded to a questionnaire which included items asking for their perception of how they think others might feel toward the 120 annoying behaviors. Results indicated that subjects perceive the annoyance that others experience exceeds what they themselves experience. In Study II, social annoyance within two specific social events, i.e. weddings and funerals, were examined. Subjects were undergraduates and graduate students (N=136,mean age=21.0), along with their mothers (N=91,mean age=49.2). The questionnaire included items which dealt with : (1) attitudes toward 12 annoying behaviors, and means of coping; (2) the degree to which they perceive themselves as a social entity versus an individual entity (Social Consideration); and (3) their perception of how society should be (Belief about Society). Factor analyses showed that Belief about Society consists of three sub-scales : regulative, symbiotic and selfish belief. Furthermore, mothers scoring high on regulative and/oo symbiotic perceived annoyance the most, while students showed a positive correlation between Social Consideration and attitude toward social annoyance. These results suggest that belief about society and social consideration are important concepts toward examining social annoyance.

The purpose of this paper was to discuss the locus of behavioral norms and what one "ought to do", two elements thought to be central to the conceptualization of social norms. With reference to this, two research questions were probed : 1) Do social norms constitute our inner regulation of behavior, or are they external standards held by group members?; and 2) Where is the standard for what one "ought to do" attributed to? Arguments between the two explanation for the locus of norms, i. e., "inner regulation" and "external standard", were offered, and this review concluded that social norm presuppose sociability, but that the internalized function was indispensible in decision making. In discussing the notion of what one "ought to do", this paper examined two aspects of social norm based on Cialdini, et al. (1991). In this process, we defined two forms of "ought to do" from the perspectives of generally desirable behavior, and behaviors particular to a given situation. Finally, from these discussions, we offered some future directives for social norm research.
