The efficacy and safety of Kampo preparation Sho-seiryu-to were studied in a joint double-blind trial in comparison with a placebo. The study was carried out on 220 patients with perennial nasal allergy at 61 hospitals. Granules in a dose of 3 g were administered 3 times daily for 2 weeks. Moderate to high improvement was recorded in 44.6% of the treated patients and in 18.1% of those receiving placebo. The difference is significant (p <0.001). Side effects were noted in 6.5% of the treated patients and in 6.4% of the controls (not a significant deference). The side effects were mild and had no influence on the daily life of the patients.

Otolaryngologists or allergologists, have only recently become familiar with the term laryngeal allergy or allergic laryngitis. However, laryngeal allergies have become increasingly noteworthy with increases in allergic diseases, such as nasal allergies, asthma and atopic dermatitis. Pollinosis patients allergic to Japanese cedar often complain of itching or the sensation of a foreign body in the larynx, in addition persistent coughing or soreness of the throat. The existence of laryngeal allergy was proven on the basis of study in rats sensitized with Japanese cedar pollen, in previous studies. In the present paper were view the nature, mechanisms, manifestations, differential diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal allergy, both fundamentally and clinically.

スギ花粉主要抗原の一つであるCry j Iをラット腹腔内注射にて感作し, さらにCry j Iを点鼻, その6時間後の鼻腔, 喉頭, 気管粘膜に浸潤している好酸球およびリンパ球を観察し比較検討した。ラットはBrown Norwayのオス13匹を用いた。5匹をコントロール群, 8匹にCry j I 10μgとアルミニウムゲル4.5mgを0.4ml蒸留水に溶解し, 12日の間隔をあけ2回腹腔内注射を行った。血清Cry j I特異IgE 抗体価はIgE-capture ELISA法にて測定した。鼻粘膜, 喉頭, 気管はCry j I溶液点鼻6時間後に採取した。血清Cry j I特異IgE抗体価は感作群307.1±185.3任意U/ml, コントロール群0.0±0.0任意U/mlで感作群において有意の上昇 (p<0.01) を認めた。浸潤細胞について鼻粘膜では好酸球 (p<0.01), リンパ球 (p<0.05) ともに感作群に有意に多く浸潤していた。喉頭では感作群で好酸球浸潤が有意に多かった (p<0.01) が, リンパ球は両群で有意差は見られなかった。気管では両群とも好酸球, リンパ球ともにほとんど見られなかった。Cry j I腹腔感作ラットは鼻腔及び喉頭においてアレルギー性病変を起し得るものと考えた。
