Social psychologists have recently begun to explore the problem of free-will beliefs. Philosophers have been working on the problem of free will over the ages, and studies of social psychologists on free-will beliefs are based on past philosophical theories. Meanwhile, philosophers not only argue over the theoretical issue of free will but also engage with the research program of experimental philosophy. This program shares the methodology of social psychology, and experimental investigation of belief in free will is proceeding at a rapid pace. In consideration of the above arguments, it seems obvious that social psychologists need to collaborate with philosophers on the problem of free-will beliefs. The authors therefore review the findings of each discipline and construct a model of people’s free-will beliefs. In this model, we consider free-will beliefs as composed by alternative possibility and agency, and these components function to promote attribution of moral responsibility, self-control, and social fit.

This research developed a reliable and valid Japanese version of the Free Will and Determinism Plus Scale (FAD+) to measure people's belief in free will. Study 1 developed a Japanese version of the FAD+ using questionnaire data from 203 undergraduates. Study 2 tested the reliability and validity of the Japanese FAD+ in a sample of 362 adults. The results provide evidence that the translated scale has the same factor structure as the original scale. In addition, free will beliefs were associated with locus of control, sense of trust, and belief in a just world, indicating high validity of the scale.

This research deals with determinants of perception of social consensus between the self and ingroup in the minimal group paradigm. Specifically, we predicted that ingroup projection would shield the individual from threats because connection with ingroup members could provide comfort and validate self-concepts. The results confirmed our hypothesis that the manipulation of self-threat invokes enhanced ingroup projection, whereas outgroup projection was not affected by threats to the self. These results are consistent with the previous literature that ingroup members are judged to be similar to the self. Adding to these findings, our data imply that when people are under threat, they tend to project their own traits onto ingroup members for the purpose of self-protection. The findings are discussed within the context of the potential use of self-ingroup relationships as self-defense mechanisms.

This article examines the effects of language use on explicit and implicit attitudes. We employed the matched-guise technique to measure participants' impressions of standard-Japanese and Osaka-dialect speakers. Implicit attitudes were assessed by the Implicit Association Test (IAT). The Osaka-dialect speaker was evaluated as warmer than the standard-Japanese speaker, suggesting that explicit attitudes toward the Osaka dialect have changed positively. On the other hand, the results for the impression of intelligence were consistent with the previous literature that the standard-Japanese speaker was seen as more intelligent than the Osaka-dialect speaker. Compared with explicit attitudes, the analyses of implicit attitudes revealed that participants showed a consistent implicit bias favoring standard-Japanese language use. The changing processes and relationships of explicit and implicit attitudes were discussed.

Grit refers to a non-cognitive trait that is characterized by perseverance and passion for long-term goals. In this study, we developed a Japanese version of the Grit Scale and examined its reliability and validity. A confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the Japanese version of the Grit Scale had two factors corresponding to the original version (study 1, 2, and 3). The results indicated that the scale has high reliability (study 1 and 3). Grit was positively correlated with conscientiousness (study 2 and 3) and self-control (study 3). Nonetheless, grit demonstrated predictive validity of longitudinal persistence and success measures over conscientiousness, self-control, and intellectual ability (study 3). These results are consistent with previous studies and support the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the Grit Scale.

本研究は存在脅威管理理論の観点から,死の顕現性が自己と内集団の概念連合に与える影響について検証をおこなった。存在脅威管理理論では,死の顕現性が高まると文化的世界観の防衛反応が生じると仮定している。これらの仮定にもとづき,人々は死の脅威にさらされると,自己と内集団の概念連合を強めるかどうかを調べた。死の顕現性は質問紙を通じて操作し,内集団との概念連合は反応時間パラダイムをもちいて測定した。その結果,死の脅威が喚起された参加者は,自己概念と内集団概念で一致した特性語に対する判断時間が一致していない特性語よりも速くなることが明らかになった。その一方,死の脅威が喚起されても,自己概念と外集団概念で一致した特性語に対する判断時間は一致していない特性語よりも速くはならないことが示された。これらの結果は,死の顕現性が高まると,自己と内集団の概念連合が強化されることを示唆している。考察では,自己と内集団の概念連合と存在脅威管理プロセスとの関係性について議論した。

自由意志に関する信念は責任帰属や自己コントロールなど、われわれの社会生活で重要な機能を果たすことがこれまでに提起・実証されている。しかし、「自由意志」が何を意味するのか、という根本的な問題について、個々の研究者の想定は異なっている。そこで、本研究は人々の自由意志概念を構成する具体的な要素について、Monroe and Malle(2010)にもとづき、自由記述の方法を通じて検証をおこなった。大学生301名の回答をコーディングした結果、人々の自由意志概念の主要な要素は他行為可能性(「複数の行為が可能である」ということ)、行為者性(「自分の心理状態が行為を引き起こす」ということ)、制約からの自由(「内外の要因に制約されずに行動する」ということ)の3つであることが明らかになった。つまり、人々にとって自由意志とは、「何ものにも拘束されず、自分の心理状態にそって行為を選択する」ということを基本的に意味すると示唆される。これらの結果にもとづき、考察では心理学の先行研究や哲学領域の知見との整合性について議論した。

This article describes the development and validation of a Japanese version of the Free Will and Determinism Scale (FWDS) to measure people's beliefs about free will. The scale was evaluated with two samples of 166 and 171 undergraduates. The resulting data fit the two-factor model with general free will as one factor and personal free will as the other. Furthermore, only personal free will was associated with self-control, consistent with expectations indicating the test's validity.

There were two primary purpose of this study. One major purpose was to test the effects of disbelief in free will on self-control and the other purpose was to examine whether free will beliefs affect causal attribution of success and failure. Although a great deal of effort has been made on the definition or existence of free will, only few attempts have so far been made at how people's belief in free will influences subsequent judgment and behavior. As an example of such attempts, Rigoni, Wilquin, Brass, and Burle (2013) found that induced disbelief in free will weakens people's motivation of self-control, which suggests dismissing free will leads people to rely on more automatic and impulsive actions. On the basis of this earlier research, the authors intended to confirm the phenomenon that disbelief in free will reduces motivation of self-control. Furthermore, we investigated the processes of causal attribution by belief in free will since they are thought to be associated with both free will beliefs and self-control. Fifty-two undergraduates participated in the study and they were randomly assigned to one of the three conditions (free will, determinism, or control). After free will manipulation, participants completed the Stroop task, whose performance reflects motivation to self-control. Finally, participants received false feedback of success or failure in the Stroop task and they answered attributional questionnaire. The results did not confirm our hypothesis regarding self-control: Participants who were induced to disbelieve in free will performed equally well in the Stroop task as other conditions. However, causal attribution was linked with manipulation of disbelief in free will: Participants who were induced to disbelieve in free will showed less self-effacing bias in task attribution. The findings are suggestive that free will beliefs alter causal attribution processes, which in turn affect a person's social judgment and behavior.

本研究では,家族介護と公的介護に対する選好度の規定要因および関係性について検討を行った。一般成人331人を対象とした調査研究の結果,家族介護意識が家族介護・公的介護に対する選好度を規定していること,および,両者の選好度の間には背反的な関係があることが明らかになった。具体的には,調査対象者が被介護者の立場に立って回答した際に,家族介護への選好は介護サービス等の公的介護の利用抑制につながり,介護への態度が公的介護導入を制限する要因になることが認められた。一方,家族介護に伴う負担の懸念が高い場合は公的介護利用を志向して,介護サービスに対する税金使用への賛意が高まることが示唆された。しかし,以上の仮説モデルは心理的負債感によって調整されており,心理的負債感が低い人は返報義務を感じにくいために,介護受容における選択的選好や公的介護を利用する上での積極的関与が観察されなかった。以上の結果に基づき,介護選択と介護政策に対する態度の関連性や,介護受容における家族介護意識と心理的負債感の役割について議論した。

自由記述方式の質問をもちいた過去の研究では,人々にとって自由意志は「何ものにも制約を受けず,自分の心理状態にそって行動を選択する」ということを基本的に意味すると示唆されている。しかしながら,人々の自由意志信念に関する既存の尺度は,人々の素朴な自由意志概念ではなく,研究者の理論的な自由意志概念にもとづいて作成されてきた。そこで著者らは他行為可能性,行為者性,制約からの自由の3つの因子から構成された,人々の素朴な自由意志信念を測定するための新たな尺度を作成した。本論文では,3つの研究で約4,000人の回答者(大学生および一般成人)が分析にふくまれている。その結果,予測されていた因子構造や尺度の信頼性が確認された。それにくわえて,他行為可能性と行為者性の得点は,道徳的な責任帰属の得点と正の相関関係をもつことが明らかになった。これらの知見は,心理学および哲学の文献と照らし合わせて議論されている。

In a study (<i>N</i>=74), we manipulated the perceived entitativity of elderly people and a relative salience of stereotypes (<i>e.g.</i>, a relative salience of their warmth) by presenting scenarios. The results showed that when perceived entitativity is high, warmth elicits active facilitation and lack of competence elicits passive harm. Furthermore, admiration mediates warmth and active facilitation. On the other hand, when perceived entitativity is low, stereotypes and behavioral intentions are not associated. The findings suggest that entitativity determines the process by which stereotypes elicit behaviors.</p>

The current report examined the relationship between implicit self-evaluation and ingroup evaluation. Although previous research has indicated that explicit self-evaluation predicts ingroup evaluation on each trait dimension, there has been much less emphasis on how implicit self-evaluation and ingroup evaluation are mutually interrelated. On the basis of the theories which emphasize the role of the individual self in ingroup evaluation (e.g., Cadinu & Rothbart, 1996), we predicted that implicit evaluation of the self would become a better predictor for implicit ingroup evaluation. Forty undergraduates participated in the study. We used the typical minimal group procedure (Tajfel et al., 1971), and all participants were randomly assigned to artificial laboratory groups. Implicit self-evaluation and ingroup evaluation were measured with Implicit Association Test (IAT; Greenwald et al., 1998). The analyses revealed that the self and ingroup were more associated with positive traits than negative traits, indicating that the self and ingroup were both positively biased. These results are in line with the findings of previous literature, but there was no significant correlation between overall implicit self-evaluation and ingroup evaluation. Thus, the overall pattern of results in the present study was inconsistent with our prediction, but, nonetheless, implicit self-evaluation significantly predicted implicit ingroup evaluation on some Big Five trait dimensions. Namely, implicit self-evaluation was positively correlated with implicit ingroup evaluation on extroversion and openness dimensions. In contrast, they were not significantly correlated with each other on neuroticism, conscientiousness, and agreeableness dimensions. The discussion argued that these differences may be partly due to the significance of participant's evaluation of each trait dimension.
