Social psychologists have recently begun to explore the problem of free-will beliefs. Philosophers have been working on the problem of free will over the ages, and studies of social psychologists on free-will beliefs are based on past philosophical theories. Meanwhile, philosophers not only argue over the theoretical issue of free will but also engage with the research program of experimental philosophy. This program shares the methodology of social psychology, and experimental investigation of belief in free will is proceeding at a rapid pace. In consideration of the above arguments, it seems obvious that social psychologists need to collaborate with philosophers on the problem of free-will beliefs. The authors therefore review the findings of each discipline and construct a model of people’s free-will beliefs. In this model, we consider free-will beliefs as composed by alternative possibility and agency, and these components function to promote attribution of moral responsibility, self-control, and social fit.

In his recent book, Takayuki Suzuki proposes a novel physicalist solution toward the hard problem of consciousness, wherein the representationalist analysis of qualia is advanced via incorporating the intrinsic notion of representation. In this review, I critically examine the metaphysical character of his resultant position and present some questions on to what extent it satisfies the core theses of physicalism. The moral to be drawn is the significant tension between physicalism and the phenomenal principle, whose endorsement could misdirect us into troublesome positions in an unexpected manner.

There is an emerging experimental trend in bioethics and neuroethics. We briefly review several topics in this trend and discuss how the existing and future studies can have normative implications related to bioethical/neuroethical issues. Particularly, we consider three major ways to draw such implications; (1) contributing to conceptual analysis and philosophical (counter-)evidence, (2) figuring out the unreliability of moral thinking and thereby providing a debunking argument, and (3) estimating the feasibility of ethical norms and policies.

Temporality is an essential part of our conscious experience. Indeed, it is difficult to conceive of a conscious individual who does not know what it's like to "experience time." For instance, we know what it's like to see bubbles in a glass rising up to the surface, to hear music playing, and even to feel time passing. In this paper, we first clarify three temporal characteristics of conscious experience: change, duration, and direction. Next, we criticize a memory-based account of those characteristics and suggest a representationalist account as an alternative approach. We also consider some objections to the representationalist account raised by B. Dainton, and try to reply to them. Finally, we give an outline of a systematic representationalist theory of all the three temporal characteristics.

自由意志に関する信念は責任帰属や自己コントロールなど、われわれの社会生活で重要な機能を果たすことがこれまでに提起・実証されている。しかし、「自由意志」が何を意味するのか、という根本的な問題について、個々の研究者の想定は異なっている。そこで、本研究は人々の自由意志概念を構成する具体的な要素について、Monroe and Malle(2010)にもとづき、自由記述の方法を通じて検証をおこなった。大学生301名の回答をコーディングした結果、人々の自由意志概念の主要な要素は他行為可能性(「複数の行為が可能である」ということ)、行為者性(「自分の心理状態が行為を引き起こす」ということ)、制約からの自由(「内外の要因に制約されずに行動する」ということ)の3つであることが明らかになった。つまり、人々にとって自由意志とは、「何ものにも拘束されず、自分の心理状態にそって行為を選択する」ということを基本的に意味すると示唆される。これらの結果にもとづき、考察では心理学の先行研究や哲学領域の知見との整合性について議論した。

This article describes the development and validation of a Japanese version of the Free Will and Determinism Scale (FWDS) to measure people's beliefs about free will. The scale was evaluated with two samples of 166 and 171 undergraduates. The resulting data fit the two-factor model with general free will as one factor and personal free will as the other. Furthermore, only personal free will was associated with self-control, consistent with expectations indicating the test's validity.

Ned Block has dedicated himself to many topics of philosophy of mind in the past thirty years. We survey his contribution to the philosophical investigations of mind, consciousness and qualia by taking up principal papers contained in his Consciousness, Function, and Representation: Collected Papers, Volume 1 (2007, Cambridge, MA: MIT Press). The article is divided into five sections. In section 1, we explain what functionalism is and take up Block’s refutation of this position. In section 2 and 3, we introduce Block’s analysis of consciousness based on his anti-functionalism and consider how he applies this analysis to several new findings in contemporary scientific consciousness research. In section 3, we consider a series of his arguments against representationalism. In section 4, we formulate the harder problem of consciousness which Block regards as an obstacle to his position.

今年度は、本研究プロジェクトの5つの研究課題のうち、従来の哲学方法論の批判的評価、哲学的自然主義の可能性と限界、実験哲学の哲学的意義の評価、という3つの課題についておもに研究を進めた。従来の哲学方法論の批判的評価に関しては、2017年10月に香港大学からマックス・ドイッチュ氏およびジェニファー・ネド氏を招いて、科学基礎論学会秋の研究例会および東京大学で、哲学における直観の重要性と信頼性に関するワークショップを開催した。また、笠木雅史が同月に開催された日本科学哲学会のシンポジウムで、分析哲学における哲学方法論の歴史について発表を行った。哲学的自然主義の可能性と限界に関しては、井頭昌彦が自然主義の定式化や代替案を論じた論文を発表し、鈴木貴之と太田紘史が、自然主義的な心の哲学の現状や課題について、論文や共著を発表した。また、鈴木貴之が道徳に関する心理学研究の哲学的意義について、2018年2月に東京大学で開催された社会心理学コロキウムで発表を行った。実験哲学の哲学的意義の評価に関しては、笠木雅史が文化間の実験哲学研究に関する問題について論文を発表し、鈴木貴之が哲学における責任をめぐる議論の現状と、そこにおける実験哲学の意義について論文を発表した。また、鈴木真が実験哲学についての辞典項目を執筆した。さらに、来年度以降に本格的に研究を進める予定であるメタ哲学的観点からの哲学史の見直しに関しても、2017年8月に東京大学で研究会を開催し、小山虎氏が20世紀前半における分析哲学と科学哲学の関係について講演した。

研究計画に則り、心脳問題への学際的アプローチを図った。そのために、(1)心的状態と神経状態の多層的構造の機能主義的分析と、(2)機能主義と調和する心身問題の形而上学的研究を行った。(1)心と脳の多層的構造の機能主義的研究心身問題で根本的な問題になる意識について、その認知神経基盤の連続的かつ多層的な機能的分析を遂行した。一般に機能主義的な物理主義は、意識を共時的-通時的な面で多層的な機能的クラスターとして分析しようとする。そこで当研究者は、意識の統一構造を明確化する分析を提案し、そのように分析されて得られた個々の意識的状態をある種の表象として分析する理論を提案し擁護した。さらにそれが、認知神経科学における意識の相関項(Neural Correlates of Consciousness : NCC)の知見とどのように調和しうるかについて検討し提案した。(2)心身問題の形而上学的研究上記のような、心を因果的役割によって分析する機能主義に基づいた物理主義を擁護・展開するために、形而上学的な心脳問題の研究を行った。とりわけ、機能主義的な物理主義を反駁するとされる一連の思考実験と形而上学的見解について、検討を行った。それらには具体的には、中国国家論証、逆転地球、知識論証が含まれる。当研究者は、それらがどのように論理的欠陥を抱えており、そしてそれが哲学と認知神経科学の総合的な機能主義理論を反駁しないのかについて提案した。

Anti-reductionists have argued for multiple realization as an obstacle to intertheoretic reduction. On the other hand, many philosophers have treated its original and conceptual arguments not yet to be confirmed, or tried to undermine them by splitting the realized types for local reduction. Here I analyse multiple realization through biological and psychological phenomena and construe them as substantive obstacles to reduction. Their empirical illustration does not support dismissing them as purely conceptual. Moreover, they resist the local reduction, showing that the splitting-strategy falls into token-identity theory but not type-identity theory. My argument goes on with analysis of realizing mechanisms, which also accounts for why biological and psychological sciences explore diverse mechanisms without universal laws.
