The changes of π-electron distribution in atoms in purine bases participating in the hydrogen-bond formation in Watson-Crick model of deoxyribonucleic acid are calculated by the simple linear combination of atomic orbital-molecular orbital (LC-AO-MO) method assuming that the alkylating agents attack the guanine at its 7-N position and adenine at its 7-N and 3-N positions. The changes in electron density are believed to make an alteration of the hydrogen bond with respect to the mode of pairing. It is assumed that the tautomeric change of guanine-cytosine pair results and weakens the hydrogen bond strength of adenine-thymine pair. These changes are discussed in relation to the biological effect of alkylating agents such as mutagenic, carcinogenic, and carcinostatic activities.

Results of the quantum biological study of an interaction of potent carcinogens such as 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxides and aromatic hydrocarbons with tissue components, especially with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), are presented and chemical carcinogenesis is discussed in connection with charge transfer phenomenon. An equation is derived to obtain the charge transfer quantity between two constituent molecules in the charge transfer complex, and distinct parallelism is found between the quantity of charge transfer and carcinogenic activity. From this result, it is suggested that the quantity of charge transfer is more important in the genesis of tumor than the charge transfer force. Summation of an alteration of base paring in Watson-Crick stereo-model of DNA resulting from the charge transfer between DNA and the carcinogens is deemed to be the cause of tumor.

信念や知識といった命題態度を表現する文の意味論は, 言語哲学の中心的問題のひとつである.この問題をめぐっては, 命題態度の対象を, 何らかの抽象的対象 (とりわけ命題) と見なす立場と, それを文や発話といった何らかの言語的対象であると考える立場が存在するが, 『意味と必然性』におけるカルナップの信念文の分析は, 後者の系統に属する先駆的な業績である.本稿は, この分析に内在する, ある論理的・意味論的な問題点を明らかにし, それを解決することを試みる.カルナップの分析は, 信念文に限定され, 他の命題態度は扱われていないため, 本稿でも信念文に議論を限定するが, 以下で指摘される問題点は, カルナップの信念文の分析と同様の観点からの, 他の命題態度の分析にもあてはまる.

As was noted by Frege, the criteria of identity for abstract objects of certain sorts can be formulated in the following form: f(x) = f(y) iffφ(x, y). I argue that the criterion of identity for persons can be formulated in the same form, and that reference to persons hinges on a conceptual operation analogous to the characterization of a function f by the formulation of such a criterion. This account suggests that a certain puzzle about personal identity over time has no determinate answer, owing to the semantic indeterminacy in the singular terms in terms of which the puzzle is posed. I present a semantic solution to the puzzle along these lines, within the framework of supervaluation semantics.

The notion of truth conditions of sentences or psychological states plays important roles in various areas of philosophy, but authors who appeal to this notion rarely explain exactly what attribute of those entities truth conditions are. Indeed, there are two notions (not always clearly distinguished) that can legitimately be called the notions of truth conditions, and these are definable by reference to different semantical frameworks. It turns out that there is an important systematic relationship between the two notions, explicitly definable within Kaplan's theory of demonstratives, and this reveals that the two kinds of truth conditions are to be attributed to entities of different ontological types.

Whereas Jaegwon Kim's metaphysical theory of events(events as property exenlpl fications)is compatible withDonald Davidson's theory of the nature of events(events asparticulars), the sernantical accounts of event sentences associated with these theories are incompatible with each other. Moreover, no natural modification of Kim's semantics is capable of explaining certain entailment relations between eventsentences in the manner open to the Davidsonian account. thus, given the plausibility of the latter account, it is reasonable to conclude that there is no simple correspondence, of thesort required by Kim's semantics, that obtains between verbphrases of event sentences and the constitutive properties of the events describeci by them.

活性メチレン化合物あるいはアニリン,核置換アニリンとハロゲン化アルキルとがフッ化カリウムを縮合剤として反応し,それぞれC-アルキル化物およびN-アルキル化物が得られることを見いだした。この新アルキル化反応はフッ化カリウムの脱ハロゲン化水素性能にもとづくものであって反応の溶媒としては1,2-ジオールたとえばエチレングリコールがすぐれた効果を有しており,反応温度は100~200℃ である。この方法はアニリンおよび核置換アニリンのモノアルキル(>C3)置換体あるいはジメチル化物の合成法としては従来の方法にくらべすぐれた結果を与える。
