We report the results of field surveys conducted by the Earthquake Research Institute, to measure tsunami heights from the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku, Japan Earthquake (M 9.0), on March 11. Measurements were taken at 296 points on the Sanriku coasts of Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi Prefectures, and the Pacific coasts of Ibaraki and Chiba Prefectures. The data are included in the results of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami Joint Survey Group. We did not cover the Sendai plain in the southern Miyagi Prefecture because other parties extensively measure there, nor Fukushima Prefecture because of the accident of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. The twelve surveys first sought traces indicating tsunami runup or inundation heights. Reliability was classified into A (most reliable based on clear physical evidence and eyewitness accounts), B (mostly based on natural traces), and C (least reliable based on equivocal evidence). Most physical evidence obtained after June was not significant; therefore, reliance was mostly placed on eyewitness accounts. Locations and relative heights above sea level were measured using handheld GPS receivers, auto-level, or total station. The measured heights were corrected for differences in tide level between measurement time and tsunami arrival time. The results are shown on table and four regional maps; however, the details of each measurement, including locations shown on 1:25,000 maps and photographs of evidence are shown in the Appendix. Along the northern Sanriku coast (Aomori and Iwate), most of the 141 heights range between 10m and 30m. Runup heights exceeding 30m were measured at one location in Noda Village and nine locations in Miyako City. On the southern Sanriku coast in Miyagi, most of the 76 measurements range between 4 and 20 m. On the Ibaraki coast, 36 measurements range from 2.8 to 8.1 m, and the heights generally decease toward the south. On the Chiba coast, 43 measurements range from 0.7 to 7.9 m, with the maximum height near Iioka, Asahi City.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of regular treadmill exercise on skeletal muscle Rictor-Akt and mTOR-Raptor-S6K1 signaling pathway in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. [Subjects and Methods] Four- week-old C57BL/6 mice were adopted and classified into normal diet group (ND, n = 10), normal diet and training group (NDT, n = 10), high-fat diet group (HF, n = 10), and high-fat diet and training group (HFT, n = 10). The exercise program consisted of a treadmill exercise provided at low intensity for 1–4 weeks, and moderate intensity for 5–8 weeks. [Results] The Western blot method was used to measure the expression of mTOR, Raptor, S6K1, Rictor, and Akt proteins in the soleus muscle. mTOR levels were significantly higher in the HF group than in the ND and NDT groups. Raptor/mTORC1 and S6K1 levels were significantly higher in the HF group than in all the other groups. Akt levels were significantly lower in the HF group than in the NDT group. The risk of obesity may be associated with the overactivation of the mTOR-Raptor-S6K1 signaling pathway and a decrease in Akt levels. [Conclusion] This study also indicates that performing aerobic exercise may be associated with the downregulation of the mTOR-Raptor-S6K1 pathway.

Background: Differences in the impact of the 1- or 2-stent strategy in similar coronary bifurcation lesion conditions are not well understood. This study investigated the clinical outcomes and its predictors between 1 or 2 stents in propensity score-matched (PSM) complex bifurcation lesions.Methods and Results: We analyzed the data of patients with bifurcation lesions, obtained from a multicenter registry of 2,648 patients (median follow up, 53 months). The patients were treated by second generation drug-eluting stents (DESs). The primary outcome was target lesion failure (TLF), composite of cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction (TVMI), and ischemia-driven target lesion revascularization (TLR). PSM was performed to balance baseline clinical and angiographic discrepancies between 1 and 2 stents. After PSM (N=333 from each group), the 2-stent group had more TLRs (hazard ratio [HR] 3.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.42–6.97, P=0.005) and fewer hard endpoints (composite of cardiac death and TVMI; HR 0.44, 95% CI 0.19–1.01, P=0.054), which resulted in a similar TLF rate (HR 1.40, 95% CI 0.83–2.37, P=0.209) compared to the 1-stent group. Compared with 1-stent, the 2-stent technique was more frequently associated with less TLF in the presence of main vessel (pinteraction=0.008) and side branch calcification (pinteraction=0.010).Conclusions: The 2-stent strategy should be considered to reduce hard clinical endpoints in complex bifurcation lesions, particularly those with calcifications.

Ophidiomycosis is an emerging infectious disease caused by the fungus Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola, which has been affecting wild and captive snakes in North America, Europe, and Australia. We report 12 cases of suspected ophidiomycosis in captive colubrid snakes in Japan. Pathological and microbiological examinations were performed, and the results confirmed the diagnosis of ophidiomycosis in two snakes, which indicated that the remaining sympatrically raised snakes also had ophidiomycosis since they exhibited similar lesions. This is the first report of ophidiomycosis in Asia caused by O. ophiodiicola. To prevent the expansion of ophidiomycosis in the natural environment in Japan, there is a need to evaluate the ophidiomycosis carrier status of imported snakes, the pathogenicity of the infection in native snakes, and the prevalence and distribution of O. ophiodiicola in wild and captive snakes. Measures also must be taken to prevent endemicity globally.

This study compared the dentin bond strength of a new universal adhesive with that of contemporary multi-step dentin adhesives. Six experimental groups were prepared according to the adhesives used and their application modes: Optibond FL (OB), Adper Single Bond Plus (SB), One-Step Plus (OS), Clearfil SE Bond (CS), All-Bond Universal using etch-and-rinse mode (ABE), and AllBond Universal using self-etch mode (ABS). Micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) and failure mode were evaluated for each group. The bonded interface was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As a result, µTBS of 6 experimental groups was followed as: OB=ABE=SE=ABS>SB>OS group. TEM micrographs of ABE and ABS groups revealed a homogenous adhesive layer formation. In conclusion, a new universal adhesive can make reliable bond to dentin, regardless of the application mode.

This paper proposes a technique for 360-degree panoramic video generating with multiple actual and virtual cameras in real-time. Our method acquires multiple images consisting of real images from physical cameras and virtual images from virtual cameras by GPU-based texture and encoding. Then, our method generates 360-degree panoramic images by ORB feature detection and matching to virtual and real images, automatic homography estimation based on the random absent consensus algorithm, multi-band blending and produces high-resolution video stream by Nvidia encoder based Hardware accelerated video encoding. From experimental results, we verified that our method takes at least 45fps at 2K resolution and 33fps at 4K resolution when transmitting the head mounted display stereo, enabling real-time 360-degree panoramic video generation as well as transmission.

Countries in the world might be classified for discussion purposes at international meetings using definitions such as small island developing states, low forest cover countries, rich forest cover countries, forest product exporters, importers, donors, etc. that use their forestry characteristics. While some countries generate income from forests, some have to compensate deficit on revenue to sustain their forests. Nations have rights and responsibilities to cooperate in sustainable forest management at the country level and global scale. Some mechanisms, such as the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), were generated by international institutions to support various countries' needs to solve local problems related to global concerns including sustainable forest management. The suitability of these mechanisms is under discussion at international meetings. Green economy and green accounting terms have also been discussed using mechanisms for payment for ecosystem services (PES). The aim of this study is to develop a method to compute the financial contribution levels for cooperation among countries with different characteristics regarding forestry activities and common forest values. Using general equilibrium models, a balance equation consisting of variables dealing with country rights and responsibilities for sustainable forests is offered as a method to hypothetically classify nations. This equation was tested using random hypothetical data. The results indicate the equation may be used to understand the relative classification of the countries.

To clarify biogeographic patterns of two mushroom species (Phallus merulinus and Geastrum courtecuissei) previously reported from Myanmar, sequence data of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA were retrieved from GenBank. The BLAST search and phylogenetic analyses of Phallus indicated that P. merulinus and P. atrovolvatus from wide areas, including Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, Brazil, and French Guiana, cannot be distinguished molecularly. The species was, therefore, considered widespread across tropical to subtropical regions. In contrast, G. courtecuissei from Myanmar was tightly clustered exclusively with G. courtecuissei from Central and South America, supporting the idea of its disjunct distribution between Southeast Asia (Myanmar) and Central-South Americas.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess regenerative and immunomodulatory properties and can control the immune dysregulation that leads to β-cell destruction. Stem-cell transplantation could thus manage insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in dogs. In this pilot study, we aimed to assess canine adipose tissue-derived MSCs (cAT-MSCs) transplantation as a treatment for canine diabetes mellitus. This study included four dogs with over a year of insulin treatment for IDDM, following diagnosis at the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. Allogenic cAT-MSCs were infused intravenously three or five times monthly to dogs with IDDM. Blood and urine samples were obtained monthly. General clinical symptoms, including changes in body weight, vitality, appetite, and water intake were assessed. Three of the four owners observed improvement of vitality after stem cell treatment. Two of the four dogs showed improvement in appetite and body weight, polyuria, and polydipsia. C-peptide has increased by about 5–15% in three of the cases, and fructosamine and HbA1c levels have improved in two of the cases. Hyperlipidemia was resolved in two of the dogs, and there was no concurrent bacterial cystitis in any of the dogs. C-peptide secretion and lipid metabolism are associated with diabetic complications. Improvement in these parameters following the treatment suggests that cAT-MSC transplantation in dogs with IDDM might help to improve their insulin secretory capacity and prevent diabetic complications.

The paracrine function of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) during transplantation has been recently studied due to its poor differentiation ratio. Dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG) has been used to promote angiogenesis in experimental animal models, however, comparable approaches for canine MSCs are not sufficient. In the present study, we assessed whether DMOG improves angiogenesis in canine adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (cAT-MSCs). cAT-MSCs were treated with DMOG and their effect on angiogenesis was investigated by cell proliferation assay, western blotting, and tube formation assay. Dimethyloxalylglycine preconditioning enhanced the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) among pro-angiogenic factors in cAT-MSCs via hypoxia-inducible factor-1α stabilization. Dimethyloxalylglycine primed-cAT-MSC-conditioned media increased angiogenesis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. These results suggest that DMOG conditioning of cAT-MSCs augmented the secretion of VEGF, which acted as a prominent pro-angiogenic factor during angiogenesis. DMOG-primed cAT-MSCs may have the potential to induce beneficial effects in ischemic diseases in clinical trials.

在日韓国人の肝がん死亡率は日本人に比べ男で約3倍、女で約2倍ほど高率である。在日韓国人における肝がん死亡率の高まりの原因を明らかにすることは肝がん発生要因の解明につながるものであり、日本人、在日韓国人及び韓国の韓国人の肝がんについて、疫学的ならびに病理学的見地より3集団間の比較研究を実施し次のような成果を得た。1.記述疫学的比較研究。1)韓国の肝がんり患率の推定。韓国の死亡診断書の約65%は医師以外の者が交付しており、死亡統計にもとづくがん死亡の解析は韓国では不可能である。韓国の肝がん発生状況を明らかにするため、政府職員・教員を対象とした医療保険制度の資料を活用した。この保険の加入者は全人口の10%におよび、性別年齢別人口も全国人口のそれと大差ない。肝がんの診断確認のために、全国各地の医療施設での検査デ-タの収集も実施した。1986年7月ー1987年6月の期間の35ー64歳に限った年齢訂正肝がんり患率(年10万人対)は男で74.8、女で15.6と推定された。1984年の日本の肝がん推定り患率に比べて男で1.6倍、女1.7倍高率であった。2)在日韓国人の肝がん死亡率とB型肝炎ウイルスに関する研究。文献調査の結果、在日韓国人の血清HBsーAg陽性率は男で約10%、女で約5%と推定され、韓国における陽性率と大差ないと考えられた。大阪府在日韓国人の肝がん死亡率をHBsーAg陽性肝がんと陰性の肝がんに分けて、日本人との比較を行ったところ、在日韓国人の肝がん死亡率はHBsーAg陽性及び陰性肝がんの両者で同様に高まっていると推論された。3)記述疫学研究のまとめ。在日韓国人の肝がんリスクの高まりは、一部本国における高いり患率を反映しているものと考えられる。しかし、在日韓国人男性では、本国よりさらに高い肝がんのリスクを有していると考えられる。さらにこの高まりは本集団におけるB型肝炎ウイルスの高い感染率では十分に説明されるものでない。福岡県の在日韓国人を対象として、飲酒、喫煙、輸血歴など肝がんの危険因子と考えられる生活習慣要因の状況を現在調査中である。2.肝がんの症例対照研究。日本人、在日韓国人及び韓国韓国人の3集団で、肝細胞がんの発生要因の関与度合いを比較検討するため病院内症例対照研究を実施した。B型肝炎ウイルス及び飲酒は、3つの研究で一致して、肝細胞がんの発生と関連していることが認められたが、関与の度合い(人口寄与危険)は3集団間で著しく違っていた。日本人及び在日韓国人の肝細胞がんの20%前後はB型肝炎ウイルス感染によるものと推定されたが、韓国の肝細胞がんでは約70%と推定された。一方、過度の飲酒は日本人、在日韓国人の肝細胞がんのそれぞれ約30%と40%を説明すると考えられたが、韓国の場合、10%程度であった。日本人の研究では喫煙との関連を示唆する結果が得られたが、量・反応関係は認められず今後の検討課題として残される。日本人、韓国内韓国人の研究では他の要因についても調査したが、両研究で輸血歴との強い関連を認め、また韓国人の研究で肝疫患の既往歴との関連が観察された。現在問題になっているC型肝炎ウイルスが3集団の肝細胞がんにどの程度関与しているかは非常に興味あるところであり、今後検討する予定である。3.肝がんの病理学的比較検討。日本人、在日韓国人及び在韓韓国人の肝細胞がんの病理組織標本にもとづく比較検討を行ったが、3集団間で肉眼的ならびに組織学的に特異な差を認めなかった。3者とも結節型肝がんが主体を占め、肝硬変合併率も50〜60%と大差なかった。また合併肝硬変も乙型が大多数であった。しかしHBs-Ag陽性率は日韓で大きな違いが認められた。日本人、在日韓国人では20%前後の陽性率であったが、韓国の症例では75%がHBs-Ag陽性例であった。

Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is the rate-limiting enzyme of dopamine (DA) biosynthesis, which is up-regulated by vitamin C administration. Nurr1 gene is highly expressed in brain and important for midbrain DAergic cell development and survival. But, the role of vitamin C and/or vitamin E during Nurr1 expression is yet to be known. Further, the synergistic effect of vitamins C and E on TH expression has not yet been explored clinically. Therefore, we studied the effects of single or co- administration of vitamin C (0.5 mM) and vitamin E (1 mM) for 72 hr, on both TH and Nurr1 expression in in vitro primary cultured gestational days (GD) 13.5 rat ventral mesencephalon (VM) by Western blot and immunocytochemistry. Our study revealed highest expressions of both TH and Nurr1 in the vitamin C + vitamin E treated group. TH expression was also increased in the vitamin C treated group than that of the control group, but the vitamin E treated group did not show any statistically significant effect. However, both the vitamin C and the vitamin E treated groups revealed increased expression of Nurr1 protein as compared with the control group. The present experimental data suggest that vitamin C can up-regulate the protein expression of TH, but Nurr1 level was elevated either by vitamin C or by vitamin E administration. Further, vitamin E acts synergistically with vitamin C to elevate TH and Nurr1 expression, which is the most novel finding of our study and for the first time; we reported this result, since there have been no published data on the synergistic effect of both the antioxidant vitamins on TH and Nurr1 expression in VM. As the motor function defect due to the progressive loss of DAergic neuron is the major reason of Parkinsonism, therefore, the results of our study finally suggest the effective role of vitamin C and vitamin E during early treatment of Parkinsonism.

Two dogs presented to the emergency service after accidental ingestion of afloqualone tablets, a muscle relaxant used for back pain in humans. Toxic effects of the drug in these dogs included vomiting, respiratory depression, seizures, ataxia, bradycardia, and hematuria. Treatment consisted of fluid diuresis, furosemide, and propofol. Flumazenil, a gamma-amino butyric acid antagonist, was administered intravenously; however, it was not effective in stopping the seizures in these dogs. Both dogs recovered with supportive treatment. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first documented report of afloqualone intoxication in dogs.

Cytotherapy with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has been studied in many species, and often requires in vitro cell expansion to obtain therapeutic doses of stem cells. Because the characteristics of MSCs, such as self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation, can be altered by long-term culture, it is important to maintain stemness during cultivation. This study assessed the changes in the characteristics of feline adipose tissue-derived (fAT)-MSCs during in vitro passaging. Stem cells isolated from the adipose tissue of donor cats were cultured for seven sub-passages. Proliferation capacity was analyzed by calculating the cell doubling time and by colorimetric assay. Expression of stem cell-specific markers was evaluated by quantitative reverse transcription (qRT)-PCR and immunophenotyping. Expression of adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation markers was also measured by qRT-PCR. Histochemical staining and measurement of β-galactosidase activity were conducted to detect cellular senescence. The cell proliferation rate decreased significantly at passage 5 (P5). Gene expression levels of pluripotency markers (Sox2, Nanog, and Klf4) and stem cell surface markers (CD9, CD44, CD90, and CD105) decreased during continuous culture; in most assays, statistically significant changes were observed at P5. The ability of cells to undergo adipogenic or osteogenic differentiation was inversely proportional to the number of passages. The proportion of senescent cells increased with the number of passages. These results suggest that repeated passages alter the proliferation and multipotency of fAT-MSCs. In clinical trials, early-passage cells should be used to achieve the maximum therapeutic effect.

[Purpose] This study attempted to examine whether Pilates is an effective exercise for improving the postural alignment and health of middle-aged women. [Subjects and Methods] The participants in this study were 36 middle-aged women (20 in the experimental group, 16 in the control group). The experimental group participated in Pilates exercise sessions three times a week for 12 weeks. Body alignment and composition measurements before and after applying the Pilates exercise program were performed with a body composition analyzer and a three-dimensional scanner. [Results] Postural alignment in the sagittal and horizontal planes was enhanced in the Pilates exercise group. Trunk alignment showed correlations with body fat and muscle mass. [Conclusion] The Pilates exercises are performed symmetrically and strengthen the deep muscles. Moreover, the results showed that muscle mass was correlated with trunk postural alignment and that the proper amount of muscle is critical in maintaining trunk postural alignment.

[Purpose] Balance is generally defined as the ability to maintain the body’s center of gravity within its base of support and may be categorized by either static or dynamic balance. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of 8 weeks of balance training on strength, and the functional balance ability of elite weightlifters. [Subjects] Thirty-two elite weightlifters were recruited for the present study. They were divided into exercise groups (8 high school students, 8 middle school students) and control groups (8 high school students, 8 middle school students). [Methods] Body compositions were measured by the electrical impedance method, and a Helmas system was used to measure basic physical capacities. The muscular function test was conducted using a Cybex 770. [Results] There were no significant changes in body composition after the training. In contrast, significant changes were found in the number of push-ups, one-leg standing time with eyes closed, and upper body back extension. Interestingly, only the left arm external rotation value after the exercise training program showed a statistically significant difference from the baseline value. [Conclusion] The peak torque values of shoulder internal rotation and knee extension were significantly changed compared to the baseline values, which mean subjects showed balance of their muscular power. Therefore, the results of the present study suggest that an 8-week balance-training program would positively affect elite weightlifters’ balance ability and flexibility. We think that well-balanced muscular functionality may enhance athletes’ sport performance.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is pathogenic for humans, many domestic animals and wild birds, but infectious cases with clinical symptoms in cats have not been reported. E. rhusiopathiae was recovered from a 4-month Russian blue breed cat with a very poor body condition score of 1 (BCS: 1/5). The isolate was typed as serotype 2b. Mice experimentally infected with the clinical isolate of E. rhusiopathiae through subcutaneous or intraperitoneal routes survived, and the organism was recovered from the spleen and synovial and pericardial fluids. Cats experimentally inoculated with the isolate either orally or subcutaneously survived but commonly exhibited depression and emaciation together with localized erythemal lesion of the skin accompanied by purulent ocular discharge. On hematological analysis, the number of total white blood cells was high compared with that in normal cats. Histological examination revealed congestion and moderate inflammation with focal necrosis. This observation may provide insight on E. rhusiopathiae infection in cats with the possible epidemiological significance and implications as a potential source of infection to other animals and humans.
