We report the results of field surveys conducted by the Earthquake Research Institute, to measure tsunami heights from the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku, Japan Earthquake (M 9.0), on March 11. Measurements were taken at 296 points on the Sanriku coasts of Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi Prefectures, and the Pacific coasts of Ibaraki and Chiba Prefectures. The data are included in the results of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami Joint Survey Group. We did not cover the Sendai plain in the southern Miyagi Prefecture because other parties extensively measure there, nor Fukushima Prefecture because of the accident of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. The twelve surveys first sought traces indicating tsunami runup or inundation heights. Reliability was classified into A (most reliable based on clear physical evidence and eyewitness accounts), B (mostly based on natural traces), and C (least reliable based on equivocal evidence). Most physical evidence obtained after June was not significant; therefore, reliance was mostly placed on eyewitness accounts. Locations and relative heights above sea level were measured using handheld GPS receivers, auto-level, or total station. The measured heights were corrected for differences in tide level between measurement time and tsunami arrival time. The results are shown on table and four regional maps; however, the details of each measurement, including locations shown on 1:25,000 maps and photographs of evidence are shown in the Appendix. Along the northern Sanriku coast (Aomori and Iwate), most of the 141 heights range between 10m and 30m. Runup heights exceeding 30m were measured at one location in Noda Village and nine locations in Miyako City. On the southern Sanriku coast in Miyagi, most of the 76 measurements range between 4 and 20 m. On the Ibaraki coast, 36 measurements range from 2.8 to 8.1 m, and the heights generally decease toward the south. On the Chiba coast, 43 measurements range from 0.7 to 7.9 m, with the maximum height near Iioka, Asahi City.

The Ulsan fault extends for 50 km along the NNW-SSE direction in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula; this is one of the most important active faults in Korea. Its paleoseismicity has recently attracted considerable attention. With the support of KOSEF (Korean Science and Engineering Foundation), excavation studies of this fault were conducted in 1999 as a part of the Korea-Japan cooperative research at Kalgok-ri in Kyongju city. The results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) The Ulsan fault plane has an eastward dip of approximately 30 degrees and exhibits typical reverse faulting. (2) It was reactivated three times in the past 30,000 years, in particular, twice after the age of AT tephra (approximately 25,000 years BP). (3) A vertical displacement of approximately 0.8 m occurred during the fault event, and the amount of net slip along the fault plane is calculated to be 1.6 m.

The Nojima earthquake fault appeared along the recognized active fault in the northwestern part of Awaji Island in association with the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake. This earthquake fault is dominated by right-lateral offset (max. 1.7m), with a high-angle reverse fault which has a maximum verlical displacement of 1.3m uplift on the southeastern side. We have repeated the measurement of seven profiles of the fault scarp at two areas (Hirabayashi, Ogura). The fault scarp of the Hirabayashi area (profiles 1-4) is composed of the Plio-Pleistocene Osaka Group at the base and is overlain by an unconsolidated gravel bed at the top. The Ogura area (profiles 5-7) is entirely underlain by the Plio-Pleistocene Osaka Group. The fault scarp in these two areas is characterized by an overhanging slope due to thrusting of the upthrown side. Scarp retreat at Hirabayashi occurred in association with the sudden collapse of the gravel bed and proceeded more quickly than at Ogura, where fault scarp retreat proceeded by exfoliation of the fault plane as well as partial collapse of the Osaka Group. These facts strongly indicate that the lithological control is most significant for the formation of original fault scarp as well as retreat. The retreat of fault scarp was very slow after March to June at Hirabayashi and June to July at Ogura, and proceeded more quickly than some of seismically generated normal faults.
