This paper aims to clarify which characteristics influence the number of urban park visitors. The study employs a residual analysis as a heuristic approach, which is a useful approach to choose explanatory variables effectively. In fact these characteristics are difficult to identify among numerous related variables, and a big residual value may involve the significant factor. The results reveal five major factors to have influences on the number of park visitors in concern: 1) population living in park's service distance; 2) volume of tall trees; 3) number of simple amusement equipment/facilities; 4) width of streets facing to a park; and 5) park elevation relative to surrounding road level. In addition, it was found that a block park has a service distance of 250 to 350 meters.

Massey's method is a rating system that provides individual teams or players ranking. It is known that Massey's rating is related to the Katz centrality measure of the networks. Analyzing the node centrality of networks provides useful information on how important a node is. This study investigates a sampling distribution of Massey's rating and provides the test statistics of the null hypothesis of equal rating against the alternatives. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare the power of the proposed test and show that the asymptotic distribution of the ratings is well approximated by the normal distributions. Real dataset applications using men's tennis ATP ratings are illustrated.

This study examines the factors influencing item nonresponse, especially when it comes to income and sexual behavior, in the Japanese context. Many item nonresponses on questions on income and sexual behavior are a serious problem for analysis since they might cause biased estimations. However, many previous studies on item nonresponse when it comes to income and sexual issues examine surveys carried out in Western societies. Moreover, many previous studies have not distinguished between “Refused” and “Don't Know.” In addition, many previous studies on income nonresponse do not focus on the effect of religion, although questions on religion have been argued to affect survey cooperation. Thus, we analyzed the data from the Japanese General Social Survey 2000/2001 to distinguish the reason for nonresponse properly, reveal factors on income and sexual behavior nonresponses, and examined the effect of religion. We conducted multinomial logistic regressions of nonresponse in household income, individual income, and sexual behavior. Our findings are as follows: (1) Factors that affected nonresponses of income and sexual behavior are different between Japanese and Western societies. (2) The effect of age and educational background are different between “Refused” and “Don't Know.” (3) Respondents whose family has a religion tended to answer with household income. These findings indicate that we should consider the nonresponse mechanism due to the Japanese-specific context, distinguish the reason for nonresponse because of different effects of factors, and focus on the effect of religion on income nonresponse.

While the crude mortality rate for lung cancer has been increasing year by year for both men and women, the age-adjusted mortality rate, which is calculated based on the base year population, has been decreasing since the 1990s. We will discuss the influence of specific generations on this peak in age-adjusted mortality rates by comparing age-adjusted mortality rates based on multiple base-year populations and by examining time-series trends in the percentage of the population in each 5-year age group in crude mortality rates.

Causal mediation analysis estimates causal effects by focusing on the mediators between cause and outcome. Multiple causally related mediators are often strongly correlated, making the estimation of causal effects difficult. In addition, recent years have seen a number of mediators compared to a sample size. In this paper, we propose a two-step estimation method based on sparse partial least squares regression and pathway lasso. The proposed method can identify the causal pathways among many candidate causal pathways. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by simulation studies and a real data analysis.

This paper is an essay on nonrespondent bias in statistical random sampling surveys. In particular, it focuses on the personalities of respondents and nonrespondents in survey cooperation. First, I review previous relevant research on nonrespondent bias and outline the main points of the nonrespondent bias problem. Next, focusing on items related to interpersonal trust, I analyze personality differences between cooperative and non-cooperative respondents using time series data from the Japanese National Character Survey and its related surveys. I then present rules of thumb that may be useful for survey researchers dealing with nonrespondent bias. Finally, I discuss future issues. Particular mention will be made of social disparities in electoral voting and polling, i.e., people who tend to drop out of electoral voting and polling.

The purpose of this study is to discussthe implementation and importanceabout the multinomial logit model of Bayesian Age-Period-Cohort analysis. Since the design matrix of three factorsdoes not become full rankdue to the identification problem derived fromlinear dependency between age, period and cohort, few studies have useda complex model. In contrast, this paper presents the practical multinomial logit model withefficient sampling by reparameterizationabout the constraints of assuming a random walk for each effect. Furthermore, we compared the estimates ofthe logit model andthe multidimensional modelabout political issuesthat should be considered from multiple perspectives. Using repeated cross-sectional survey in Japanfrom 1973 to 2013, the multinomial logit model was shown to be effectivebecause it was able to obtain a trendthat were not captured in the logit model.

This review addresses the development of computational models in educational psychology. First, we generally explained computational models and their background. Second, we searched academic articles relating to computational models in psychology and other fields. The search revealed that, on the one hand, international journals in behavioral or cognitive sciences include several articles relating to computational models, and the number is increasing in general psychology journals. On the other hand, domestic and international educational psychology journalsscarcely have relating papers. Third, we described the current challenges in educational psychology and how the ideas and analytical method on computational models would contribute to overcome these challenges.

In conducting an exploratory data analysis to study the hit mechanisms of manga and anime works with appealing supporting characters, the author began by assessing the volume and content of Twitter posts on Demon Slayer and observed that SNS not only facilitated communication between devoted fans, but also served to fulfill the desire to own merchandise and to provide a place for publication of derivative works. Furthermore, in an analysis using the Character Quantitative Survey unaided recall data, the top unaided recall works were classified into four types based on supporting character popularity patterns. The results obtained by creating a composite variable of unaided recall weighted by simple total based on the number of recall of the work's name or character and assessing the mean values and correlations of each variable measured for each work showed that the composite variable of unaided recall had a strong correlation with the indices of tie-in merchandise purchase and purchase intention, and with the indices of ‘high spirit and fun’ and ‘attention and impersonation’ in the field of offered experience.

The main objective of this paper is to investigate East & South East Asian peoples' views on Japanese as represented in the response data of the Japanese census 1997-98 by the National Institute for Japanese Language. Firstly, we summarize the historical and social backgrounds of those 10 Asian countries under investigation, concerning their conditions of language learning. Secondly, we analyze their images on Japanese with respect to certain five linguistic dimensions as well as the relationships between their images about Japanese, Japan, and the Japanese. The result shows that these factors are closely related to each other. Thirdly, we show that most Asian countries expect their further advancement in the relationships with Japan in economy, but that this may not necessarily lead to the rapid increase of learners of Japanese. Finally, we suggest some possibility about the near future development of East & South East Asian zone.

In recent years, in addition to basic scholastic abilities and technical knowledge, it is thought that basic abilities required to function as a member of society are important to use them in society, then basic abilities required to function as a member of society have been trained in many educational institutions. Moreover, communicative abilities are regarded as important for social working. In this study, we measure abilities evaluated by short group work and related to communicative abilities in basic abilities required to function as a member of society, and we analyze the relations between the elements by graphical modeling for improving abilities. Based on the hypothesis that measurements by self-evaluations are higher than them by others evaluations, we measured abilities by self-evaluations and others evaluations. However, measurements by self-evaluation were not only higher than them by others evaluations, but also the models of the relations between elements were different. Therefore, we compared the models by TTA evaluations, student self-evaluations and student others evaluations, and examine what kinds of improvement are effective.

Although past studies have demonstrated the significant impact of emotional expression on the helpfulness of online reviews, the explicit effects of emotion require further exploration. This study fills a gap in the existing literature by uncovering, in detail, how emotions affect review helpfulness. We considered whether the influence of emotion is dependent on varying review content and customer uncertainties about a product. We used Latent Dirichlet Allocation, one of natural language processing (NLP) techniques, to extract review content and we used product pricing plans to represent product uncertainties. We applied a regression method to analyze 268,293 (English only) online reviews of 2,832 products to explore further the relationship between emotions and review helpfulness. Our findings suggest that 1) the impact of emotions on perceptions of helpful reviews depends strongly on the review content that emotions interact with, and 2) similar emotional dimensions have different impacts when uncertainty about a product differs. We present the effects of each emotion in detail.

In Internet surveys, the responses for rating scale questions can be influenced by appearance of the rating scale on a computer screen. To examine the effects of the way of displaying response items on a computer screen of the internet survey, the author has conducted an experiment using 16 kinds of questionnaires. Each of the questionnaires includes same questions but the choice items of 7-point rating scales were displayed in different manners: vertical or horizontal layout, ascending or descending order, numbered or worded labels, bipolar or unipolar scales. By using the result of the surveys, he mainly compares top-3 box ratings. In the comparisons, he finds some order effects and other effects: higher top-3 box ratings by displaying the rating scales in ascending order than that of descending order and higher top ratings by displaying numbered labels with bipolar scales than that of worded labels. However, he doesn't find any significant difference from whether to display the scales vertically or horizontally.

The authors clarify the behavioral traits of PLP (Partnership Loyalty Program) members before their trial purchase at the focal company. Specifically, they apply a zero-inflated negative binomial regression model using historical data of PLP members: purchase, marketing reaction, and reward program usage. There are two contributions to their research. First, they clarify the behavioral traits of PLP members at other coalitional companies before the trial purchase at the focal company, which cannot be captured by the loyalty program of a single company. Then, the behavioral traits of PLP members are captured from the three perspectives: purchasing behavior, marketing reaction, and reward acquisition/redemption behavior. These results induce discussions on the effectiveness of PLP from the perspective of sharing and utilizing behavioral information of PLP members among coalitional companies.

In this article, the author discusses statistical problems associated with the factor analysis of categorical data in the general context of the latent variable model. Modelling process for categorical data and the estimation procedure for the parameters of the model are discussed. Also, it is argued that the usefulness of these models as item response models can be tested in the area of educational measurement. Finally, the problems which remain unsolved are discussed and the future directions of the latent variable model are suggested.

中国語の音声認識の機械処理を進める上で,中国語の計量的な性質を把握することは不可欠である.本論文ではSuen(1986)が中国語の高頻度単語として提唱している6,321語を用いて,中国語の音声認識を行う上で必要となるその音声学的性質について以下の項目にわたる計量分析を試みた.(1)声母,韻母,音素,声調の出現頻度(2)音節,音素を単位とした単語長 (3)音素を単位としたエントロピー,1次条件付きエントロピーおよび2次条件付きエントロピー (4)声母,韻母,音素を単位とした近距離単語数および声調,品詞が近距離単語数に与える影響 (5)声母,韻母,音素を単位とした置換対.その結果,例えば,声調や品詞情報が既知の場合でも一漢字単語では音素を単位としたレーベンシュタイン距離1の単語数は1単語あたり10.38語にものぼり,機械的な音声認識において単語単位での誤り訂正は極めて難しいが,二漢字単語では同じレーベンシュタイン距離1単語数は声調や品詞情報を考慮しなくとも1単語あたり平均約3語で,声調,品詞情報が既知であると1単語あたり0.26語まで減少するため,声調,品詞情報などを有効に利用することにより単語単位の誤り訂正が十分可能であると考えられるなど,今後中国語の音声認識などの機械処理を進める上で有益な幾つかの結果を得た.

We attempt to clarify the mechanism of the amount of money of purchase by each customer in a department store in Nagoya city using the Bayesian regression model. Specifically, we use two types of explanatory variables, “Direct mail”, and “Events”, to research a relationship between the purchase amount and department store's strategy. Direct mail means the number of mails that the department store uses to inform their customers about new items, privileges of card holders, and storewide events. We also add “frequency coming to the store” as explanatory variables. Additionally, we adopt type-1 Tobit model to presume the optimal value for the dependent variable, if the dependent variable in the regression model is zero. Furthermore, we examine the relation between department strategy and the customer's attributes by incorporating customer's attributes into the hierarchical model.

To assess the contribution of the partial knowledge of examinees to the scores of multiple-choice tests, we have proposed two mathematical models, the Binary-model and the Terminal model. These models both were based on the probability with which an examinee recognizes a choice correctly, and on the arrangement of choices. As an application of these models, the distributions of scores were given for the one-best-response type and the two-responses type of questions of the national board examinations for the medical and dental practices. The distributions of scores by these two models were compared.

SDS(Self-rating Depression Scale)developed by Zung in 1965 is widely applied to psychiatric studies. The existence of the response bias in SDS, however, has been suggested by several researchers. The purpose of the present study was to examine precisely the response bias in the Japanese version of the SDS. Data from 2, 097 Japanese high school students are shown to illustrate the response bias related to the positive or negative expressions of items in the scale with statistical methods of analysis, together with several sets of empirical data from otherstudies. The findings were discussed in terms of statistical view. Apart from the main subjects, we point out some incorrectness of Zung(1967b)in Appendix.
