Pairwise similarity coefficients are popular measure for binary variables. Many different measures of similarity have been proposed in the literature. Then we are interested in which one is the most effective for classifications. We focus on the fact that almost all measures of similarity are composed of interactions and main effects, and conjecture that the most useful similarity is an interaction because main effect don't play a role of classifications but totally order. All combinations of sixteen similarities coefficients and five clustering method were tested with music CD POS data. The cluster validation were assessed by interpretable, uniform, reproducible, external and internal criteria. As a result, the similarity coefficient which is more correlative with an interaction turns out more useful for classifications. That is, the best similarity is an interaction.

The purpose of study was to test validity of self-construal scales through an examination of differential item functioning (DIF) using multigroup mean and covariance structure (MG-MACS) analysis. The data analyzed were composed of 368 Japanese and 152 European Americans. A series of MG-MACS analyses was conducted on 6 items, which have displayed two-factor model of self-construal in the previous studies. As a result, no items demonstrated nonuniform DIF, though uniform DIF was detected on two items. Since the number of DIF items was small and partial factorial invariance was established, factor mean comparisons were conducted. Consistent with the theories of self-construal, Japanese participants were significantly higher on interdependent self-construal and were significantly lower on independent self-construal than the American counterparts. Based on the results of DIF analyses and factor mean comparisons, cross-cultural validity of self-construal scales was discussed.

This study focuses on the similarities and differences of the work values among the peoples studies in our East Asia Value Survey conducted during 2002-2004. It shows useful aspects of cross-national comparison on the East Asia.Some researchers consider that the East Asia is under the influence of Confucianism, as the western countries under the influence of Christianity. It is said that scholars and civil servants are more respected than practical workers in Confucian ethics. Therefore, Maoism in China emphasized practical workers (farmers and labors) more respected. On the other hand, Confucian ethics of Japan was accepted among samurai (warrior)'s ethics at Edo era, may have been lost in the stream of democratization after Meiji era and in the reorganization after World War II. The questionnaire of our East Asia Value Survey included two open questions about the occupation: “What occupation do you respect most ?”; “What is the occupation you yourself would like to have ?” The results of these responses indicate that the three categories as “Teacher”, “Medical Doctor” and “None or Don't Know” are useful criteria for the comparison among East Asian Peoples.

The purpose of this research is to reveal how the marketing mix strategy in the department store influences the customer's shopping trip behavior to the department store. The model represents the mechanism of frequency of coming to the stores with framework of an hierarchical Bayes Poisson regression model. The model includes three explanatory variables: “Store loyalty”, “Direct mail”, and “Events”. These variables are also modeled by functional form with parameters. As a result, we could confirm that direct mail is one of the marketing mix variables that have the most effect on frequency of coming to the store.

This study aims to uncover the mechanism by which certain groups of women developed a methamphetamine addiction and ended up incarcerated. The subjects are 202 female inmates incarcerated for violating the Stimulant Drug Control Law shortly before their release from Japanese penal institutions between January and May 2016. Estimation by structural equation model indicates that higher self-esteem is less likely to be associated with developing depression, and depression is more likely to be correlated with drug addiction. However, we find that the influences of the victimization experiences during childhood or adulthood are not significant for this group of female inmates. These results align with the more recent finding by Carbone-Lopez & Miller (2012) and Smith (2017). We discuss the implication of the result.

Drug stores have recently expanded in size and widened available product categories. Efficient store management requires accurate and rapid data analysis and in-depth understanding of customers' purchasing characteristics. In this study, we apply the block clustering method to point-of-sale (POS) data with identifications (IDs) in drug stores in Japan's Gifu region to examine the purchasing characteristics of product categories. Since this method can simultaneously evaluate customers and product categories, it is possible to investigate data more easily and quickly than other analytical methods used for customers and product categories. We construct blocks combining clusters of customer and product categories and identify the customers that stores should prioritize and specific product categories that should bolster marketing measures. This study proposes a method that retailers can employ when considering decisions on marketing activities such as product lineups, sales floor layouts, or pricing strategies.

In recent years, more and more consumers who cancelled their newspaper subscription have signed up for online-flyer portal sites. However, their site access logs are not necessarily linked with their purchase records stored in ID-POS data, which is a marketing problem from the sellers' point of view. As a solution to this problem, we propose a practical framework of a hidden Markov model which allows for the assessment of the flyer advertisement. We also present a hierarchical Bayesian model which sheds light on the information search and shopping behavior of consumers, given individual heterogeneity. Our results demonstrate that the subscribers of online flyers are more likely to visit stores as they have more flyer accesses, email advertisements from portal sites and the announcements of time-limited sales.

In February 2020, Japan began experiencing outbreaks of COVID-19 infection and deaths due to the disease. Open data on the number of positive PCR test results are available from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). We applied the SARIMA models to these time series data and selected an ARIMA(1,1,2) model as the best model among this class of models for the number of infection deaths during the main period, which includes the period covered by the declaration of emergency. We applied bivariate VAR models to the data of the number of PCR-positive persons and the number of infection deaths and selected a VAR(15) model as the best model for the main period. With regards to Granger's causality of the number of PCR-positive persons relative to the number of infected persons and deaths, we obtain clear causality in the data only up until June 17, with causality not so clear after June 18, when MHLW changed the definition of fatalities.

Many mail surveys have been conducted in Japan since the 1950's. Unfortunately, their response rates have been lower than other methods of administration. Various difficulties that result from the lack of an interviewer are major contributing factors of the lower response rates. This paper provides some guidelines regarding the design of mail questionnaires, the timing of the follow-ups, and other operational details. Mail surveys can potentially achieve high response rates. Further, their response rates in rural and urban areas are very similar. In addition, the response rates of mail surveys were found to be unrelated to the educational level of the respondents. A problem of mail surveys is the omission of questions by some respondents. However, there are usually few omitted questions and the overall quality of answers is usually better. The tendency to leave unanswered some branching questions is discussed and suggestions are provided how to decrease it.

This study examined theeffect of knowing the answer as a factor affecting the illusion of transparency. Previous studies showed that people have the illusion of transparency, or a tendency to believe that their internal states are more discernible to others than they actually are. Meanwhile, previous studies showed that people have a tendency to overestimate the extent of easiness of presented tasks when they know the answers. We divided 70 subjects into 3 groups; actors (n=12), observers being taught the answer (n=29) and observers not being taught the answer (n=29). Actors drank five cups of soft drink, including a vinegar-mixed one while pretending to be impassive in front of a video camera, and estimated the number of correct identifiers for the vinegar-mixed one out of 10 observers. Observers being taught the answer estimated the same thing as actors after watching each actors' video. Observers not being taught the answer tried to identify the number of the vinegar-mixed one correctly after watching each actors' video. As compared to the actual number of correct identifiers, actors and observers being taught the answer estimated more correct identifiers. The result implied that knowing the answer is one of the factors affecting the illusion of transparency. Furthermore, the result showed that the magnitude of illusion caused by knowing the answers is approximately 10 percent and the magnitude of illusion caused by subjective experience of this experimental task (“drink vinegar-mixed soft drink”) is approximately 11 percent.

The purpose of this study was to establish a new diagnostic criterion using BMI in place of WC to promote the efficiency of the medical screening and confirm the usefulness of the criterion. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of obesity-related complications. To find the candidates in such condition, the JASSO criterion using “waist circumference (WC)” have been adopted by Japanese MHLW. According to this criterion, specific health checkup program was begun to delay or prevent these complications in 2008. However, the measurement of WC was obstructive and could not be implemented smoothly for medical screening, since it took extra time and effort. The subjects were 7,492 Japanese subjects (4139 men, 3353 women; age: 34-83 years old), who had been receiving health checkup from 2007 to 2011. With the JASSO criterion regarded as standard, we evaluated the diagnoses obtained by our new criterion using sensitivity and specificity. We finally established BMI at 24 as the cut-off value for both men and women for ease of use. It can be considered that this criterion is better than that the JASSO criterion, since it can increase the efficiency of health checkups by omitting the measurement of WC while keeping the same level of diagnostic performance as the JASSO criterion.

We proposed a new method for analyzing the relationship among industrial sectors by Z-score standardizing and visualizing the input-output tables as minimum spanning trees (MST). These results are also quantitatively evaluated in terms of degree centrality and closeness centrality. We confirmed the effectiveness of our method in comparison with the simple method of no Z-score standardization and with a conventional method based on stock market data. In our experiments, using the input-output tables in Japan in 2000 and 2005 and stock data in 2005, the simple method centralized industrial sectors, (such as other business services whose trade volume is simply larger), while our proposed method centralized sectors, (such as electronics, financial and pharmaceutical industries). In addition, we confirmed that our method showed more accurate economic transaction between industries than the conventional stock analysis method.

This study conducts a data-driven classification of the response styles for the 2,131 respondents of the SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) survey. In the standard Likert scale measurement, item responses reflect not only the latent traits of respondents but also their response style biases which are irrelevant for the purpose of the original measurement. The anchoring vignettes is an effective method to measure and correct for such biases. In this study, we first modeled the anchoring vignettes variables in the SHARE dataset using the Bayesian multidimensional item response model. Then, we classified the estimated individual response style parameters using the divisive analysis clustering. As a result, seven different clusters of response styles were obtained. While some of them correspond to the well-documented response styles, many of the clusters of respondents exhibit unique response styles which are both interpretable and relevant. Thus, bottom-up classification approach of response styles would undertake a key role in revealing the empirical analysis of item response behavior.

Within the past decade, structural equation modeling (SEM) has been a well known component of the methodological arsenal of the social sciences and behavioral sciences in Japan. This approach is being employed in an expanding range of substantive areas because of it includes many conventional statistical method such as the general linear model and factor analysis. This review paper is intended for researchers and students who want to study and use SEM or covariance structure analysis described in books and articles published previously.
