Understanding others’ facial expressions has an important role in daily emotional communication. To date, many studies, including developmental studies, have focused on emotions by using facial expressions as the stimuli. However, very few reviews have been conducted on understanding others’ facial expressions, including studies on adults, children, and infants. In this study, the ability to understand others’ facial expressions are reviewed. First, the author identified four abilities that are required for understanding others’ facial expressions. Second, studies on adults, children, and infants are reviewed with respect to each of the four abilities required for improving the understanding of others’ facial expressions. Finally, the author proposes the future direction for the study of the development of understanding others’ facial expressions.

Individuals usually imagine the future, set goals, make plans, and invest much effort in achieving these goals. However, individuals also often fail to achieve their goals by giving in to temptation. "Being good at self-control" is traditionally assumed to be key in achieving future goals. The present paper aims to clarify what "being good at self-control" means by reviewing psychological research about self-control. We suggest that the concept of "good at self-control" can be organized into two dissociated concepts: (1) "good at conflict resolution," based on executive function (or cognitive control) and value representation (e.g., temporal discounting, value integration), and (2) "good at goal achievement," based on value updating (e.g., habituation, goal internalization). We discuss related issues such as socialization or the agentic aspect of self-control, and we suggest avenues for future research on organizing the concept of self-control.

Clinical trials are prospective studies that evaluate the effectiveness of interventions on humans under certain circumstances. The frequentist approach in which the sample size is strictly controlled before tests is common in clinical trials. However, clinical trials that use an adaptive Bayesian method in which the trial can be flexibly stopped, based on data accumulated during the course of the trial, has been recommended to reduce costs and to meet ethical requirements in the fields of medicine and medical device development. In the field of psychological interventions, the current situation is that application based on Bayesian framework is often extremely poor. Therefore, this paper outlines the design method of clinical trials by the adaptive Bayesian method, discusses the benefits of and problems in its application to psychological intervention research, and provides examples of its virtual application.

<p>The possibility of implementing 'we-mode' among users in cyber spaces, which is proposed by Kitazaki, is discussed by reviewing the studies on body ownership and the sense of agency, both of which are strongly involved in self-body perception and recognition. The movement of a body in cyber space should strongly correlate with that in the physical space, but not necessary be rendered as realistic. Furthermore, the interaction and relationship between the spaces from the point of view of both a sense of realistic self-body in a cyber space and behavior changes after an experience in a cyber space are discussed to consider the possibility of creating 'we-mode' bridging of the physical and cyber spaces.</p>

The author introduced the past and current research that focuses on cognitive function in schizophrenia. Based on a comprehensive clinical neuropsychological examination, it was determined that schizophrenia has a background involving a wide range of cognitive dysfunctions. In particular, it is suggested that there is a substantial problem in memory and in processing speed. Furthermore, there are also problems with both attention and execution functions. The recent memory impairments in schizophrenia were not the same as that observed in amnesia. Aspects of memory organization and memory strategy have been characterized and have resulted in intervention methods to improve cognitive impairment with positive and verifiable effects. Improvement after cognitive remediation therapy seems to lead to improved social adaptation, and the therapeutic approach will likely become more popular with additional studies.

It is unclear why the number of women in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is still small. In this review article, I focus on gender stereotypes (i.e., the belief that "women canʼt do math") from a social psychological perspective. It has been reported that women and girls are influenced by negative stereotypes in experimental settings as well as in the real world. For example, researchers have found that negative stereotypes can undermine the performance of women in math exams. More recently, implicit stereotypes have been found to affect womenʼs math preferences either equally or even more than explicit stereotypes. How can we counteract the effects of negative stereotypes? Interventions, such as informing women that their math performances and career decisions are often unconsciously influenced by gender stereotypes, have been introduced based on accumulated knowledge of both gender and stereotypes. Having reviewed such literature, I conclude that psychologists in Japan should put more effort into conducting research on how to encourage women and girls to pursue their career plans, especially in the STEM field.
