This paper describes a trial study for reproducing adequate very high-speed speech for visually handicapped person. At times, visually handicapped people rely on the use of recorded speech content such as in the case of reading some books or newspaper and so on. In such cases, many of them have wondered whether "rapid playback" might be possible because it is difficult to take a general view of the whole contents.

From the results of the fatigue measurement by CFF (Critical Frequency of Fusion), it was found that this fatigue is influenced by the right-and-left difference of an angle of convergence. Furthermore, the authors consider that the human fatigue tendency for any dominant eye can be examined by EM algorithm analysis.

In June 2016, all local stations of NHK began operating File-Based News Production System. In this system, all users are able to share video files via IP network and use meta data of contents effectively. This file-based system realizes dramatic improvements in speed and efficiency for the workflow of news production.

In this paper we present a new method for automated warping of images. Proposed method is based on variational approach, and the deformation mapping is obtained as a solution which minimizes squared sum of pixelwise differences under smoothness constraints. We applied the proposed method to real images with encouraging results.

In this paper, we propose a novel self embedding watermarking scheme using block truncation coding (BTC). In our scheme, two components which are derived from BTC were utilized for embedding watermark. Computer simulations show that our scheme successfully detect modifications and recover them to some extent.

Recently, practical application of 3D scanners promotes use of point cloud. It is necessary to manually create a surface shape in order to represent concave - convex surface profile of the 3D model. Our method can automatically extract the concave - convex surface shape from the point cloud data.

This report describes the subjective evaluation of the HEVC encoder for Hi-Vision. The encoder is developed for the purpose of communicating and reporting with limited bandwidth in case of a disaster. The subjective evaluation suggests that the image quality of developed HEVC encoder is approximately equal to the image quality coded by an AVC encoder for broadcasting, which is set to twice the level of the bitrates of HEVC.

This paper describes the measurement system of delay waves for OFDM with spectrum analyzer and personal computer. The system calculates D/U and delay time od delay waves by using IFFT processing of OFDM spectra data.

To evaluate effects disparity and resolution on the high resolution stereoscopic images, the preference of images with different disparities and resolutions were evaluated by paired comparison method. As a result, effects disparity and resolution were same degree on some images in the short viewing distance which viewers were able to tell the difference of resolution, on the other hand, the effect of disparity was observed only in the long viewing distance which angular resolution of image was over 30 cycle par degree.

An image retrieval system based on name of person/place which reflected in news video images is required to utilize archived videos. One of the techniques to realize the system is a scene text recognition technique which can recognize a text written on signs and name tags. We propose a robust method of detecting multi-oriented scene text candidate by using a rotated-aspect ratio feature. Moreover, we define a rotated bounding box descriptor to fast find the rotated-aspect ratio.

Toward the closedown of terrestrial analogue TV broadcast on 24th July 2011, the construction of the terrestrial digital broadcasting relay stations is becoming the final stage, and it is still necessary for its costs to reduce further. As for mini-transmitting system, we are promoting the low-cost type using a gap filler system. However, there are many mini-transmitting stations that should keep frequency precision to avoid SFN interference between the other stations. So, we could not adopt conventional gap filler system, because it has only a crystal oscillator or an OCXO oscillator. Therefore we developed a gap filler system to report here, which can input 10MHz signal from an outside standard oscillator.

Downmixing method of 22.2 multichannel sound signal which can provide 2 channel stereo signal by way of 5.1 channel surround signal in receiver was investigated for 8K Super Hi-Vision broadcasting. Proposed downmixing methods were examined by subjective evaluation and the appropriate method was determined consequently.

Authors are seeking universal services to be applied to broadcasting. As the one of them, we focused on assisting elderly viewers in audio, and built an audio processing system. The processes are based on compensating their hearing characteristics. Viewers can listen to the programs with processed audio without special devices.

In this report, we show the field experimental results of digital terrestrial broadcasting reception in an interference environment caused by multipath outside the guard interval. To combat the delay spread over the guard interval, we use channel equalizer that performs a fast Fourier transform (FFT) on 4 OFDM symbols in combination and equalizes the multipath distortion in frequency domain. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the channel equalizer.

The Foveon color image sensor has three photo-sensing layers. The spectral sensitivities of the three layers are extremely different from those of the RGB primary color filters. The color signals acquired by the Foveon sensor should be transformed to RGB color signals. For that purpose, we propose a new color transformation method. First, our method recovers the multi-spectral reflectance of each imaged color from its acquired color signals by solving the ill-posed problem with the regularization technique, and then transforms the multi-spectral reflectance to RGB color signals. We evaluate the performance of our method by computer simulations.
