To evaluate the influence of spatial resolution in numerical simulations on the duration of consecutive dry days (CDDs) and near-surface temperature over the central mountains in Japan, a regional climate model was used to conduct two experiments with horizontal resolutions of 5 and 20 km. Compared with observations, the spatial and temporal features of the CDDs were simulated well in the 5 km experiment, whereas in the 20 km simulation they were overestimated over the mountains and underestimated in the surrounding regions. The accuracy in the simulated CDDs affected the near-surface temperature in the model. In years with a difference of more than five days in the CDDs between the 5 and 20 km experiments, near-surface temperatures over the mountains were 0.2-0.3 K lower in the 5 km simulation compared with the 20 km simulation. This was due to the lower number of CDDs in 5 km simulation causing active cloud convection and reduced net radiation at the ground, resulting from a large decrease in the solar radiation at the ground. In addition, a land surface wetness controls a spatial heterogeneity of temperature difference between two experiments.

Monitoring particulate matter is essential to alert the public about health risks. The Terra/MODIS true color image clearly captured a yellow band over Hokkaido prefecture in Japan on 7 March 2016. We investigated whether this event was an Asian dust (Kosa) transport or not with the ground-based observations in Sapporo and Takikawa in Hokkaido and NASA's MERRA-2 re-analysis data. The timing of increased particle number concentrations (PNCs; greater than 0.5 μm) was clearly measured by a low-cost aerosol sensor at Sapporo and Takikawa in the early afternoon. For this particle size range, the PNC by this aerosol sensor had greater agreement with another commercial instrument for the 1-hourly mean data. The lidar data at Takikawa and NASA's AERONET at Sapporo also implied the increased dust particles (i.e., dominance of non-spherical and coarse particles, respectively), which supported that the PNC increase was due to the dust transport. The hourly PM2.5 data in Sapporo significantly increased in the evening rather than around the noon to early afternoon. We concluded that this event was judged as an Asian dust (Kosa) event in Hokkaido starting from the early afternoon, which was, however, not reported by Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) based on their visible observations.

Since around 2013, the globally averaged sea surface temperature has rapidly warmed up and reached its highest on record. During this time, there was an intensifying El Niño event that caused positive temperature anomalies in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Compared with the conditions observed in 1997/98, when the previous highest record was marked associated with strong El Niño event, there were notable differences detected in the recent conditions. In the tropical Pacific, remarkable warming near sea surface associated with strong El Niño event in 2015/16 started from significantly warmed conditions along with positive temperature anomaly redistributed from the western part since early 2014, resulting in positive anomalies in the central to eastern part remaining for more than two years, much longer than 1997/98 event. In addition, substantial warming was observed in the North Pacific around 2013 and contribution of the North Pacific region to the global averaged SST anomaly marked significantly large value and was comparable to that of the tropical Pacific.

This study examined the impact of an active phase of the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) on a torrential rain event that occurred on the western coast of Sumatra Island on 12 December 2015, using surface meteorological observations, meteorological radar observations, and balloon sounding data obtained from the pre-Years of the Maritime Continent field campaign. Strong MJO activity took place in mid-December 2015 into January 2016. Radar observations revealed that a convergence and convective cloud merger of mesoscale convective systems from an eastward propagating MJO and westward moving diurnal convection over the western coast of the island was the immediate cause of the torrential rain. An investigation of the occurrence of convection over the island showed that both westward moving diurnal convection from the mountains and eastward propagating convection from the Indian Ocean occurred on 12 December, because the westerly winds in the lower troposphere associated with the MJO were only just initiated and were weak on the day. The results suggest that the leading edge of the MJO westerly wind bursts provided favorable conditions for an active phase of the MJO to work with the westward moving diurnal convection and cause torrential rain on the western coast of Sumatra Island.

The observation operators in the local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LETKF) were improved to enable use of observations in the vicinity of the poles in the data assimilation system composed of the atmospheric general circulation model for the Earth Simulator (AFES) and the LETKF. The improved observation operators allow to assimilate the observations located south (north) of southernmost (northernmost) Gaussian grid latitudes. An algorithm for searching the nearest observations from an analyzed grid for error covariance localization was also modified to efficiently assimilate observations near the poles.The new algorithms were incorporated into the LETKF, and the impacts of routine radiosonde observations at the South Pole during the periods of July 2012 and January 2013 were assessed. The radiosonde observations suppressed an artificial expansion of the analysis ensemble spread which occasionally caused numerical instability in the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere over the Antarctic regions. The analysis was also improved in the Antarctic regions.

The annual variation of extreme precipitation in Japan was analyzed using hourly data at 981 stations for 36 years (1979-2014). Except over the Nansei Islands, the intensity of hourly extreme precipitation (Pext) defined by upper 0.1% cases is found to show a unimodal annual variation with a peak in midsummer, unlike total precipitation amount which has a bimodal annual variation with two peaks of Baiu and Shurin. The dependence of Pext on mean temperature is close to or slightly lower than the Clausius-Clapeyron (CC) rate of 6-7%/K, indicating that the annual variation of extreme precipitation is strongly linked to that of saturation vapor amount. On the other hand, Pext is different according to regions by several tens of percent for a fixed temperature. This fact suggests the influence of geographical factors on its spatial distribution. As for 24-hour precipitation, Pext shows larger deviation from the CC scaling and larger regional differences than that of hourly precipitation, implying stronger control of synoptic effects in generating long-lasting heavy rainfall.

To quantify the atmospheric iron deposition on the northern North Pacific region, we measured concentrations of iron in ice cores drilled at Mount Wrangell, Alaska, in 2003 and 2004. The iron concentration profile from 1981 to 2003 showed seasonal peaks each spring. This variation was similar to the seasonal variation in the concentration of mineral dust in the atmosphere in the North Pacific region. The annual iron fluxes calculated from the ice core records ranged from 3.2 to 27.0 mg m−2 yr−1, and the temporal variation in the iron flux was significantly correlated with the frequency of severe dust storms occurrence on the East Asian continent (r = 0.65, p < 0.05) and the total number of Kosa days observed in Japan (r = 0.64-0.66, p < 0.05), but not with the precipitation amount in Alaska. We concluded that the amount of iron deposition onto the northern North Pacific is controlled mainly by the emission of dust from the east Asian continent and not by scavenging processes in Alaska.

We describe two unprecedented large (100-member), long-term (61-year) ensembles based on MRI-AGCM3.2, which were driven by historical and non-warming climate forcing. These ensembles comprise the “Database for Policy Decision making for Future climate change (d4PDF)”. We compare these ensembles to large ensembles based on another climate model, as well as to observed data, to investigate the influence of anthropogenic activities on historical changes in the numbers of record-breaking events, including: the annual coldest daily minimum temperature (TNn), the annual warmest daily maximum temperature (TXx) and the annual most intense daily precipitation event (Rx1day). These two climate model ensembles indicate that human activity has already had statistically significant impacts on the number of record-breaking extreme events worldwide mainly in the Northern Hemisphere land. Specifically, human activities have altered the likelihood that a wider area globally would suffer record-breaking TNn, TXx and Rx1day events than that observed over the 2001-2010 period by a factor of at least 0.6, 5.4 and 1.3, respectively. However, we also find that the estimated spatial patterns and amplitudes of anthropogenic impacts on the probabilities of record-breaking events are sensitive to the climate model and/or natural-world boundary conditions used in the attribution studies.

A regional atmospheric model was employed to demonstrate that a strong westerly wind, which occurred around December 2001 prior to the 2002/03 El Niño event, was enhanced by sea surface temperature gradient along the equator in the western Pacific warm pool region. Furthermore, a regional oceanic model was employed to demonstrate that the enhanced westerly wind event substantially increased oceanic Kelvin wave response along the equatorial Pacific Ocean.

This study investigates the characteristics of local-scale afternoon rainfall and its environmental conditions in and around the Nobi Plain under synoptically undisturbed conditions in summer by using operational meteorological data. The analysis of radar/raingauge analyzed precipitation data revealed that strong rainfall occurs over the mountain slopes in late afternoon and in the northern part of the Nobi Plain in early evening, while light rain frequently occurs around the mountain peaks in early afternoon. Examining mesoscal analysis data indicated that the primary difference in the environmental conditions that distinguish between rain and no-rain days is middle-level moisture field, with moister condition being found on rain days. Because of the significant difference in the middle-level moisture, stability index is useful in distinguishing the environmental conditions between rain and no-rain days.

Features of lightning around Japan over a four-year period are described using World Wide Lightning Location Network data based on global observations of very low frequency radio waves. Lightning density over land is lower than that over the ocean and the oceanic area of high density runs along the Kuroshio Current. The zone of highest density is found to the west of the Nansei Islands; however, very strong lightning rarely occurs there. Conversely, lightning density decreases gradually towards the eastern part of the Kuroshio Current, where the occurrence of very strong lightning increases.The ratio of very strong lightning in most of the analysis area tends to increase in the cold season, and it becomes large in areas where lightning frequency is low. Furthermore, both very weak and strong lightning have a tendency to occur in areas where rain intensity is not strong.

A pair of 20-year simulations by two different versions of MIROC (Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate) was examined by using a standardized set of Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) diagnostics. One of the major differences between version 4 (MIROC4) and version 5 (MIROC5) of MIROC is the cumulus parameterization scheme. MIROC4 uses a prognostic Arakawa-Schubert scheme, whereas MIROC5 uses the Chikira scheme. MIROC5 reproduced the MJO better than MIROC4: a stronger signal in the wavenumber-frequency diagram, a slower and more noticeable eastward movement in the lag-correlation plot, and a better phase relationship between outgoing longwave radiation and zonal winds.To investigate the impact of mid-tropospheric humidity on cumulus development in MIROC5, the atmosphere-only version of MIROC5 was used for a series of sensitivity runs, each with different entrainment parameter values. The entrainment parameter settings significantly influenced the simulated MJO. Large-scale cloud systems tended to move westward with smaller entrainment parameter values, accompanied by a pair of rotations with quasi-symmetry about the equator in the lower troposphere, whereas eastward movements were faster, with larger entrainment parameter values.

The impact of a tropical cyclone on the northward migration of the Baiu frontal zone (BFZ) is investigated in the case of the tropical cyclone MAWAR (2012) using a global cloud-system resolving model, called NICAM. From 4 to 6 June in 2012, the BFZ rapidly shifts northward with MAWAR. A simulation with the initial data of 29 May reproduces the northward migration of the BFZ and the tropical cyclone. Strong southerlies on the eastern side of the tropical cyclone transport moist and high-temperature air into the BFZ. This horizontal advection affects the northward migration of the BFZ. In contrast, the BFZ stagnates to the south of Japan in another simulation with the initial data of 30 May because the tropical cyclone track is diverted eastward. Thus, realistic reproducibility of a tropical cyclone is needed for better simulations and prediction of the BFZ migration.

Energy Helicity Index (EHI), defined by the product of Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) and Storm Relative Environmental Helicity (SREH), is one of potential parameters to diagnose the possibility of tornado outbreak. In this study, probabilities that EHI exceed some criteria were examined with a mesoscale ensemble prediction system, whose grid interval was 15 km, in two tornado events in Japan (Nobeoka and Saroma tornado events). High probability regions (HPR, hereafter) of large SREH existed in the northeastern quadrants of a typhoon or a low-pressure system, while HPRs of large CAPE extended along the warm humid airflow from the Pacific Ocean. In the two events, the tornados were formed near HPRs of large EHI, where HPRs of large SREH and CAPE were overlapped. This result indicates the possibility of the probability forecast of the potential parameter for tornado outbreak.

To estimate contributions of water vapor (WV), carbon dioxide (CO2), and clouds to longwave radiation, surface downward longwave irradiance (DLI) was evaluated by comparing observations with values calculated using data from vertical profiles of WV and clouds obtained from radiosonde observations at five Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) sites. The observed DLI was reproduced by calculation with an accuracy of 3.9 ± 4.4 W m-2 for clear-sky conditions at all sites, but the accuracy was -7.7 ± 8.6 W m-2 for overcast conditions. The individual contributions of WV, CO2, and clouds to DLI were evaluated by removing these factors one by one from the normal condition including all of the factors (removal method) and by removing all factors except for one particular factor (addition method). The results indicate that the contributions of WV and clouds are relatively large, whereas the contribution of CO2 is relatively small.

We evaluated the mass concentration levels and long-term trends of black carbon (BC) in the historical and future scenario simulations using 12 climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) for East Asia, the region with the largest anthropogenic emissions. By comparing them with surface observations at two regionally representative sites, Fukue and Noto, for the period of 2009-2020, we found that the CMIP6 multi-model mean was approximately two times higher than the observed BC concentrations and did not reproduce the observed decreasing trend before 2014. Sensitivity simulations of emission inventories using a chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem, suggested that the overestimation and increasing trend of Chinese BC emissions in the CMIP6 historical inventory (CEDSv2017-05-18) were responsible for the higher concentrations and opposite trends in the CMIP6 BC simulations. The direct radiative effect of BC for CEDS was estimated to be 72% larger in East Asia than that for the ECLIPSEv6b inventory, which reproduced the observed BC concentrations reasonably well.

This study investigates long-term changes in Baiu rainfall in Eastern and Western Japan using daily precipitation records at 37 stations for the years 1901 through 2009, focusing on its seasonal progress. This period is much longer than various data analyzed in previous observational studies. In the early Baiu season (early to mid June), significant long-term decreasing trends are observed in Eastern and Western Japan, accompanying large inter-decadal variation in the former half of the 20th century. In the late Baiu season (mid to late July), in contrast, significant long-term increasing trends are observed on the Japan Sea side of Eastern and Western Japan. No significant trends are recognized either in the mid Baiu season (late June to early July) or in the entire Baiu season (June to July) over all regions. It is interesting to note that the observed tendency of delayed Baiu withdrawal in the last 109 years, when global warming has been in progress, is similar to its future changes projected by climate models.

By applying the Japanese long-term Re-Analysis project (JRA-25) and the Japan Meteorological Agency Climate Data Assimilation System (JCDAS) data to a Rayleigh-type global one-layer isotope circulation model, we performed a long-term simulation and examined how water vapor is remotely transported to the vicinity of Japan from water source regions during the early summer rainy (Baiu) season. We validated the model outputs, comparing them with the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios (δD and δ18O) of precipitation observed at two in situ sites in southern and central Japan during the 2010 Baiu, and determined that the correlations between the simulation and observation are comparable to those in precipitation in Thailand from August to October when the Asian summer monsoon withdraws. The model results demonstrate that the Baiu is characterized by relatively low values of δD and that the δD values over central Japan are lower than those over southern Japan. When the Baiu commences, Indian Ocean water increases rapidly and then contributes substantially to the total precipitable water until the withdrawal of the Baiu, which is partially responsible for the low values of δD. Once the Baiu withdraws, alternatively, Pacific Ocean water occupies most of the total precipitable water. Another signature of its withdrawal is the decrease in land water of the Eurasian continent. It is also clear that the intrusion of the Indian Ocean water into central Japan remained until the end of August in the extremely cool summers of 1993 and 2003, which is interpreted as an extraordinary persistence of the Baiu period.

A simple and accurate interpolation method applicable to semi-Lagrangian advection in a spectral global atmospheric model and downscaling is presented. The derivatives required for bicubic interpolation are usually represented by finite differences. Accuracy of bicubic interpolation is found to be improved by using derivatives calculated by the spectral method. Thus, the zonal and meridional derivatives are obtained by the Fourier and Legendre transforms, respectively. The proposed method is validated with the Gaussian hill rotation tests. The semi-Lagrangian advection model with this method produces a minimal error, comparable to that of the non-interpolating semi-Lagrangian model. In order to avoid the computationally expensive Legendre transforms, semi-spectral interpolation methods using only zonal spectral derivatives are also tested. Semi-spectral interpolation is found to be as accurate as full-spectral bicubic interpolation when quintic interpolation is used in the meridional direction.

The powerful tsunami generated by the massive earthquake that occurred east of Japan on March 11, 2011 caused serious damages of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on its cooling facilities for nuclear reactors. Hydrogen and vapor blasts that occurred until March 15 outside of the reactors led to the emission of radioactive materials into the air. Here we show a numerical simulation for the long-range transport from the plant to the U.S. and even Europe with a global aerosol transport model SPRINTARS. Large-scale updraft organized by a low-pressure system traveling across Japan from March 14 to 15 was found effective in lifting the particles from the surface layer to the level of a westerly jet stream that could carry the particles across the Pacific within 3 to 4 days. Their simulated concentration rapidly decreases to the order of 10-8 of its initial level, consistent with the level detected in California on March 18. The simulation also reproduces the subsequent trans-Atlantic transport of those particles by a poleward-deflected jet stream, first toward Iceland and then southward to continental Europe as actually observed.
