In recent years, there has been a growing interest in field museums, which has led to local communities rediscovering their cultural identity, history, and ecology. However, a field museum guide system has not been researched extensively. The purpose of this study is to develop a field museum guide system by smartphone using digitalized old maps and old photographs. An evaluation of the prototype by users yielded roughly satisfactory results. As a result, we clarified the following design features of the guide system. Based on the following designs, we have developed a guide system in Field Museum of Morioka. The guide system has four functions: push-type information providing using GPS, use of old map/photograph, story-based navigation and cooperation among on-site mobile applications and Websites to visitors before/after the visit. And, the system was evaluated by viewpoint of the visitor and operator groups of the field museum. As a result, it was evaluated that the system is useful for town walking.

Most of previous surveys of tourist activities using GPS devices have focused on where tourists visit and how long they stay, but not on what they actually do at each location. Thus, we have attempted to investigate the relations between the tourists' actual activities and their spatio-temporal data. In this paper, we conducted some experiments at a zoological park to build statistical methods for estimating whether a tourist is viewing an exhibition or not from his/her GPS logs. The result shows that their walking speed seems critical for the estimation, and, by considering additional parameters, we can estimate precisely whether 20s tourist is viewing or not.

This paper evaluates park trails by analyzing the spatial patterns of visitors' visual experiences, using digital cameras, GPS loggers, and GIS. We use a technique called “visitor-employed photography” to identify sceneries that visitors evaluated positively. We then add geo-tags to the digital-photo data. Thereafter, the spatial patterns of locations where the visitors took photos are analyzed on a GIS. The spaces and sceneries favored by many visitors are extracted by the kernel density estimation of locations where photos were taken. We find that the distribution patterns are influenced by the characteristics of walking-designed courses. Moreover, we classify the photographs into nine categories and, thereby, reveal, in detail, the spatial patterns of locations where photos were taken in each category.

We considered the specification of temporal geospatial information, and produced a temporal geospatial dataset of the area close to Kenkyu-Gakuen Station of the Tsukuba Express in Tsukuba City. Using geospatial data of each year generated from the temporal geospatial dataset, we conducted a temporal spatial analysis of human impacts such as the development of a new traffic network and land surface change such as land use. Effective temporal spatial analysis is possible using a temporal geospatial dataset if the dataset is revised with high temporal resolution.

The aim of this paper is to examine regional differences in the prevalence of pollinosis by social area type in a geodemographics dataset by carrying out binomial logistic regression analysis on the 2002-2006 Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) data. The results indicate that people living in rural areas and working in the agriculture and forestry industries are less prone to contracting pollinosis, and people with a higher household income have a higher risk of contracting the disease compared to those with a lower household income. These findings are consistent with the hygiene hypothesis that sanitary environments impair normal development of immunity and increase the risk of contracting allergic diseases. This study also exemplifies the usefulness of geodemographics as a concise indicator of the local environment for explanatory analysis of environmental health risks of pollinosis.

<p>Sun glare may be a major hazard for car drivers in the winter. This is because the sun is low in the sky during the morning and evening where the roads are at their busiest with people driving to work and to home. The purpose of this article is to analyze what to extend the sun glare disability arises in rectangular area. We derive the probability of sun glare by use of computing the number of trips driving toward the sun. In addition, we examine how the shape, the direction, the latitude of the rectangular study area affect such probability.</p>

How influential and effective GIS could be in the society was actively discussed in English-speaking countries through the 1990s. Noticing potentials in “Public Participation GIS (PPGIS),” many conducted research. This study reviews research trends and practices related to “GIS and the Society,” promoted in English-speaking countries, and discusses its possible directions in the future. One noticeable trend is that, due to rapidly advancing information-communication technology and its global-scale availability, now citizens can participate in more diverse ways, using the web technology. Taking this trend into discussion shall lead to further development of PPGIS research, from which the sites of citizen’s participation will hopefully benefit.

The image of region often is not identical with the actual boundary of the region, sometimes the image crosses over the boundary. In this study, we focus on the building name, which includes place name, and analyze about the determinants of place name exuding (exuding phenomenon). We use GIS data of 23 wards of Tokyo in Japan, and focus on the 934 place names to analyze the spatial distributions. Our findings show that railway-station, high-rise buildings, and large infrastructure (river) in the region influence the place names to cross over the region because they play as a symbol in the region. Moreover, we can see low-exuding-places are located around high-exuding-places, because high-exuding-places are distributed overall in Tokyo. The average distance of exuding is nearly the same as the distance of walk, and the distance of exuding is high near the boundary of Tokyo, because of the frequent use of car in the area. It is found that the image of region is relevant to the range of life and activity.

Making thematic maps with drawing software packages on personal computers will bring a significant contribution to the education of geography and to the analysis of micro-scale landuse maps there by making them more available and simplifying their operation. This study demon-strates the method of plotting a landuse map with a drawing software package and analyzes the completed map with an image processing program. The plotting methods are focused on (1) draw-ings of parallel lines, (2) partition of land plots, (3) selection of fonts, and (4) modification and selec-tion of patterns for land plots. The analysis also confirms, the measurement of land plots and the procedures for improving their precision. These techniques for plotting and analyzing a landuse map provide a basis for making all other thematic maps to be printed out in gray scale.

The purpose of this study is to develop a quantitative site grouping method as a supportive measure for prehistoric settlement researches. One of the basic procedures in settlement archaeological studies is to group individual sites. Grouping scale must be determined in relation to hierarchical level of the social units (e.g. micro level, semi-micro level, macro level). Conventional methods (i.e. Voronoi, Buffer) for site grouping had a difficulty in taking hierarchical structure into account. In this study, hierarchical grouping is attempted by utilizing the scale flexibility of cluster analysis. Spatial extents of the units were also measured through 'time-distance', which simulates the Jomon people's sense of distance. Sites were clustered into groups by suitable threshold values, which were estimated by spatial statistical scores calculated by K-function. Effectiveness of the method was verified by observing its correspondence to the site distribution with specific hierarchical structures. The verification confirmed the developed method to be relevant for quantitative and hierarchical grouping of Jomon-sites.

This paper reports the development of a time-series topographic map viewer "Konjyaku Map 2": Capital, Chukyo and Keihanshin Area Edition, working on Windows 2000/XP/VISTA . Although there are considerable needs for acquiring knowledge of the past status of local areas, it takes a lot of time and effort to satisfy such needs. The software shows old topographic maps on a scale of 1 to 25,000 since the early 1900s and is downloadable from the internet. The software was developed for viewing maps with these fairly simple functions and can thus be easily operated.

Due to the increase in a necessity, operability, and data availability, spatio-temporal analysis has been gathering popularity. However, there are few studies focusing on systematic reviews of it. This paper first shows basic concepts for spatio-temporal analysis such as geometrical representation of entities and changeability of attribute values over time. Then the paper constructs a matrix showing the characteristics of earlier studies. The matrix consists of two stages, where the first stage concerns the temporal representation and types of the entities, and the second stage concerns spatial representation, changeability of location, shapes and attribute values. The matrix helps us to understand the characteristics of the studies and uniqueness or similarity when compared to others.

Demographic composition, e.g., population composition by age-groups, is one of the most basic information for discussing regional issue or planning. The present study compares the future Japan through 2010-2060, estimated by National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, with all municipalities in 2010 from the perspective of demographic compositions classified by fiveyear age groups (0-4, 5-9, ..., 90+). The (dis-)similarity of compositional data can be measured with Aitchison distance, one of the core concepts of compositional data analysis. We create choropleth maps based on Aitchison distance. The maps, for example, indicate that the demographic composition of Sobetsu-cho of Hokkaido prefecture of 2010 is the most analogous of the future of Japan of 2060.

Many studies have investigated the relationships between gravity data and subsurface caldera structure beneath the area. Difficulties may arise, however, for these analyses because of different interpretations of the buried rims of the calderas. For buried calderas, ground deformations and erosional processes including landslides have significantly reduced the appearance of the original caldera rims. Generally, the interpretation of caldera rims is based on gravity data together with geological observations, because the preserved rim has a large negative gravity anomaly that reaches minima over the marginal low-density ridges. In this study, we propose an effective method to enhance the delineation of caldera rims from gravity data using watershed delineation in GIS. The proposed method incorporates a correlation analysis to appropriately assume a rock density to correct the gravity anomalies, and a band pass filter to eliminate noises in the data. Using gravity anomalies corrected with 2.60 g/cm3 of assumed rock density, and with bandpass filter that spanned the size-range of calderas, we have successfully extracted rims of the late Cenozoic calderas from NE Honshu, Japan.

Natural disaster might cause traffic congestion, changing traffic network. In this paper, we propose the way of developing the road condition analysis, animated traffic simulations of GIS and apply to the traffic situation under the Tokai downpour by using travel survey and tachometer of the drivers who had been driving under the disaster, from 9.11 to 9.12, 2000. As a result, it was revealed that many drivers who had driven at that time had involved chronic traffic jam and it took many hours to reach to destination.

We developed a flooding-type algorithm for drainage network extraction and show a full program source in the language C. The program generates automatically Drainage Direction Matrices (DDMs) from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) with sink holes. By using a random technique of random walk type, the drainage networks are processed adequately in flat plains or alluvial fans.
