Since 2007, East Japan Railway Company has been selling sets of an IC transit card called “Suica” and discounted tickets for an airport shuttle N'EX (Narita Express) to foreign tourists coming to Japan. In this paper, we use the transit data of Suica & N'EX to investigate the behavior of inbound tourists in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. From our sequence alignment analysis, the movement of inbound tourists has been identified as two patterns: (1) spending longtime in one area, and (2) being around multiple areas. In addition, a list of stations where tourists frequently mistakenly enter has been extracted. Furthermore, we compared the actual length of time between stations with the expected travel time when using the shortest path and identified several routes where tourists tended to take unnecessary detours.

Flood hazard maps are quite useful for the aid to damage reduction and emergency operations for major flood crisis. In this paper, in order to derive flood hazard maps even for ungauged basins, we propose a simple method for assessing the flood inundation area based on purely topographical analyses of Digital Elevation Model (DEM), without meteorological data and hydrological models. The quality of the map derived from the proposed method is evaluated for the Fujikawa river basin against the corresponding maps given by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Despite the crudeness of the model, the simulated maps are in good agreement with the reference maps. For the Chao Phraya River basin in Thailand, where an unprecedented flood disaster was caused during the 2011 monsoonal season, the simulated flood inundation map successfully reproduces the actual flooded land.

OpenStreetMap (OSM), well-known as one of famous and continuous Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) activities to establish open geospatial database, has been updated and maintained by a lot of volunteers all over the world day by day. In addition, OSM has attracted various kinds of users due to its worldwide coverage and open license. However, as volunteer mappers have generated or have edited OSM data, data quality such as positional accuracy, completeness and freshness is heterogeneous in different regions. Therefore, it is required and important for OSM users and mappers to evaluate data quality quantitatively and regularly. Especially, in Japan, there are not existing researches dealing with nationwide usability of OSM road data by comparing with other road data. Toward discussing significant criteria of data quality assessment, this paper describes the comparison results between OSM road data and Digital Road Map (DRM), on the perspective of positional difference and area coverage in 1 km grids and city boundaries.

Cooperation among different fields of study is an important component in developing effective GIS curricula. In this paper, we examined interdepartmental cooperation in general and cooperation between geography-related and engineering/information-related fields in particular in GIS education programs at US universities for the 2006-2007 academic year. We found that of 114 GIS education programs, 42 (37%) programs featured interdepartmental curricula comprising classes from multiple departments, and 25 (22%) programs involved cooperation among four or more departments. Cooperation between geography-related and engineering/information-related departments was found in 23 (20%) programs. The results provide useful data for developing GIS curricula in Japan.

This study aims to investigate the association between individual travel behaviors, neighborhood built environment, and social area type based on a geodemographics dataset. Neighborhood environment includes population density, land use mixture, road density, service level of public transportation, destination accessibility, and topography. By using person trip survey data for Kyoto Prefecture residents in 2010, the results of multilevel logistic analysis showed that social area type can explain the variations of travel mode choice for commuting behavior―particularly the use of public transportation and vehicle, even after controlling for neighborhood environment and individual characteristics such as gender, age, occupation, and household vehicle ownership. On the other hand, there was little evidence of association between mode choice for shopping and social area type.

Using the empirical road network data and regression analysis, we investigated the ratio of the road distance to the straight line distance in major cities in Japan. The ratios are relatively different by cities. Therefore, in order to replace the road distance by the straight line distance, we do not use the known ratio that is revealed in different city without careful consideration. If we replace the road distance by the straight line distance, we have to consider the road network of the target city. In addition, we found that the cities which have small ratio of the road distance to the straight line distance generally tend to have high coefficient of determination. In other hands, the cities that have high ratio of the road distance to the straight line distance generally tend to have small coefficient of determination. Therefore, when we replace the road distance by the straight line distance in the cities which have small ratio of the road distance to the straight line distance, there is a certain degree of reliability.

In recent years, the application of satellites and big data to the economic field has been expanding rapidly. In particular, it has become clear that the intensity of night light acquired by satellites is correlated with social and economic indicators such as gross domestic product, employment, population, and education in each country. In this paper, I first describe the method of calculating the night light intensity in Japan by prefecture and city. Next, in order to understand the versatility of the night light data, I examine the relationship between the intensity of night light at the city level and various socio-economic indicators and data published by public sectors, using Japan as a case study. Based on the results of the various analyses, it is assumed that night light can be used as a proxy variable for these various indicators. Finally, I describe the possibility of using night light to perform a rapid analysis on the stagnation of economic activity under sudden social events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The most densely populated area in the twenty-three wards of Tokyo is identified as a zone of five to ten kilometers which is centered at Shimbashi station by using Small Area Statistics of 2010 Population Census of Japan. This paper analyses the characteristics of population, households, and dwelling houses in 5 to 10 kilometer zone, comparing with inner and outer zones. It becomes clear that the high densely populated circular area of 5 to 10 kilometer zone is formed by one-person households of 20 age and 30 age groups residing in small apartments of floor space less than 49 square meters and the medium- and high-levels layer.

<p>Due to the increase in a necessity, operability, and data availability, spatio-temporal analysis has been gathering popularity. However, there are few studies focusing on systematic reviews of it. This paper first shows basic concepts for spatio-temporal analysis such as geometrical representation of entities and changeability of attribute values over time. Then the paper constructs a matrix showing the characteristics of earlier studies. The matrix consists of two stages, where the first stage concerns the temporal representation and types of the entities, and the second stage concerns spatial representation, changeability of location, shapes and attribute values. The matrix helps us to understand the characteristics of the studies and uniqueness or similarity when compared to others.</p>

The present study seeks to provide meanings to distortions in historical maps from Edo Period by using Euclidean regression analysis, which is already theoretically systematized in cognitive map studies of geography. As for meanings or factors of distortions, cognitive and other possibilities are presented. In addition, the present study attempts to construct correction models of historical maps based on characteristics of distortions found in the above-mentioned process of providing meanings to distortions.

This study highlights spatial associations of the hometown tax payment, which is a tax donation program to municipalities of taxpayers' favorite choices in Japan and is called as Furusato Nozei. The program has become an important source of revenue for low-funded municipalities. With increasing donations, the disparity between municipalities widens. To the best of our knowledge, thus far, no study has discussed the spatial characteristics from a quantitative perspective. In this study, a local indicator of spatial associations, the local Moran statistic, is used for hotspot analysis of donations made to each municipality. The results indicate the presence of spatial agglomerations, where taxpayers are aware of high return rates of their donations or reconstruction assistance for the Great East Japan Earthquake. The results also suggest that when adjacent to a municipality receiving the donation higher than the average, municipalities can be 7.8% more likely to become the same class.

We study a frequency of passing through the global choke points, that is, a dependence on the choke points by means of the sea lane network and the LMIU's vessel movement database. The choke points such as the Straits of Malacca, the Bosphorus Straits, and the Suez Canal are important sea lanes for the maritime transport of energy resource. It is, therefore, necessary to reduce the dependence on the choke points for the transport energy security. We show the effect of the change in transport volume on the dependence.

Although digital spatial statistics and map are becoming available recently, it is insufficient to study the configuration methods of data and parameter for a traffic assignment. In this paper, configuration methods are studied for traffic assignment using a GIS data. In detail, a method constructing road network from digital map and a set up method of a link parameter are studied. Moreover, methods speeding up assignment calculation in term of data configuration are explained. In numerical simulation, the methods are evaluated by assigning traffic in Tokyo metropolitan area and the results are shown in calculation time suitable for practical use and in assignment accuracy.

Residents' subjective evaluation for social-psychological characteristics of residential environment was analyzed, using survey data of residential preference of 2000 people who recently bought houses in the Tokyo metropolitan areas. Firstly, some main factors of "social-psychological evaluation", such as image of town etc., were extracted by factor analysis. Secondly, by comparison of residents' evaluations of 9 areas along railway lines, regional difference of image of town was found. Thirdly, multiple regression analysis indicated that those who have higher preference for image of town in general tend to be highly satisfied with the image of their own residential environment, after choosing their houses. This study empirically clarified the importance of considering resident's "social-psychological evaluation" when examining evaluation for residential environment.

In this paper, through my experience of supporting the use of GLAM data in digital archives, I discussed the necessity and the methods of preserving and utilizing GLAM data by integrating geospatial information and GLAM data from the standpoint of geospatial information. In the future, GLAM data, including Japan Search, will require the development and refinement of location information metadata by GLAM institutions, the field of geographic information science, and citizen participation, such as the transfer of geocoding methods from addresses and the development of a WebGIS mechanism that allows location information metadata assignment. On the side of geographic information science, it is necessary to organize and provide bone digital geospatial information in terms of digital archiving.

Sun glare may be a major hazard for car drivers in the winter. This is because the sun is low in the sky during the morning and evening where the roads are at their busiest with people driving to work and to home. The purpose of this article is to analyze what to extend the sun glare disability arises in rectangular area. We derive the probability of sun glare by use of computing the number of trips driving toward the sun. In addition, we examine how the shape, the direction, the latitude of the rectangular study area affect such probability.

To improve the hazard map of the inland water in the urban area, a few flooding images were given based on simulation data by NILIM2.0. Four conditions of the torrential rain had been simulated to Jakuzure district in Setagaya ward. For reliability improvement of inland water hazard map, the state of drainage function at the time of a flood has to be visualized, to offer a flood dynamic image. And administrative agency has to keep renewing the data base according to the progress on urban development. For the education of disaster prevention, the electronic media such as 3D images of flood simulations should be introduced.

In this study, a new automated construction method of minute road segments is developed. Numerical simulation models for rainfall-runoff and flood inundation model considering process on roads were based on so-called “Minute road segments” that are formed as simple shape polygons to calculate the flow on roads. In the developed method, firstly crossroads are demarcated from road sections of uninterrupted flow in order to simplify a polygon of road. Secondly road sections and crossroads are divided into minute road segments. The developed method was applied for Kanda catchment and the shapes of minute road segments were validated.It was demonstrated that minute road segments can be created by using the method of this study.

In recent years, Japan has developed long-distance cycle routes as part of tourism promotion policy. Cycling tourists often take these routes for inter-destination movement. However, it is difficult to gather data concerning such types of movement with existing investigation methods such as questionnaires. This study examines the effectiveness of volunteered geographic information (VGI) for analyzing inter-destination movement of cycle tourists and regional factors affecting the movement. Hokkaido was selected as a suitable targeted area. As the result, comparing the behavioral indicators derived from VGI and existing questionnaire survey, we could show that VGI were effective in capturing the actual condition of cycle tourist movement. In addition, analyzing the regional factors affecting cycle tourist movement based on Spatial Autoregression Model allowed us to detect important regional factors, including coastline, trail station and accommodation.

The number of climbers in Japanese mountains have increased for recent years, and climbing and hiking have been getting constructive fields in tourism. However, some climbing beginners, especially middle aged and older people, who are overconfident on own physical strength sometimes encounter serious accidents and distresses. Actually, an accident and a distress in a mountain have also increased in these years. In order to achieve safer mountain climbing, it would be effective to aggregate and analyze individual climbing experiences in accordance with not only individual conditions but also mountain environments even if there is poor network connection and power supply. Therefore, this paper aims to organize available datasets for analysis of practical behavior of mountain climbers, and describes methods to obtain climbing behavior data even for middle and older people under poor network and power environment. In particular, we implemented a cloud system to aggregate online-submitted climbing plans, and a check-in app using individual owned IC-cards. Finally, this paper describes some findings and discussions through our field experiments.
