One of the impacts of COVID-19 is the exponential growth of online classroom teaching. However, grasping the reaction and understanding of the students in an online classroom is difficult for the teachers. This is especially a problem in Project Based Learning (PBL) courses with practical exercises. This study provides a “place” to share information about problems encountered by each student. Other students can then use this information to perform practical exercises remotely. As a result, we were able to identify bottlenecks in the exercise tasks by creating “empathize with problems” among students.

This paper describes the instructional design to develop communication ability for students in the electrical engineering majors. It is based on the case of Fukuoka Institute of Technology which started new courses for communication skills in 2007. A series of communication education from the freshman year to the third grade is systematized, considering the developmental process of students' argumentation. In the classes, students continually learn dialogue and cooperation through various styles of discussion, debate, presentation and so on. The first introductory class of all is “Communication Theory I”, which is aimed at developing self-awareness and improving discussion skills for interpersonal relationship. In this course, students acquire skills to construct their arguments about the given issues and to evaluate others' presentation performances each other. To cultivate students' communication ability, education should not be closed in a class, but support system from departmental level is essential.

This paper presents an optimization method for guitar fingering. The fingering is to determine a unique combination of string, fret and finger corresponding to the note. The method aims to generate the best fingering pattern for guitar robots rather than beginners. Furthermore, it can be applied to any musical score on single notes. A fingering action can be decomposed into three motions, that is, a motion of press string, release string and move fretting hand. The cost for moving the hand is estimated on the basis of Manhattan distance which is the sum of distances along fret and string directions. The objective is to minimize the total fingering costs, subject to fret, string and finger constraints. As a sequence of notes on the score forms a line on time series, the optimization for guitar fingering can be resolved into a multistage decision problem. Dynamic programming is exceedingly effective to solve such a problem. A level concept is introduced into rendering states so as to make multiple DP solutions lead a unique one among the DP backward processes. For example, if two fingerings have the same value of cost at different states on a stage, then the low position would be taken precedence over the high position, and the index finger would be over the middle finger.

Three-dimensional large scale magnetohydrodynamic, two-phase flow, and electrochemical reaction coupling numerical simulations of alkaline water electrolysis with magnetic field were conducted to elucidate the bubble-bubble interaction and the influence of that on the overpotential. Numerical results shown that the magnetic field enhances the coalesce of bubbles and the bubble size was increased with the increase in the magnetic flux density. Moreover, the magnetic field suppressed the cell overpotential by suppressing the anode overpotential and ohmic overpotential. This is because, KOH concentration around the anode is increased by mixing of the electrolyte, and the reduction of the shielding effect by coalescing of the bubbles.

It is well known that inverted pendulums are difficult to control because of its non-minimum phase and non-linear characteristics. Car robot type inverted pendulums are developed and it provides small spacing than four wheel mobile robot. Moreover, car robot type inverted pendulums have high acceleration performance. In previous study, how to obtain the reference value of the body angle for driving at desired acceleration is proposed using zero dynamics of the non-linear system. This method use the exact values of the model parameters to obtain desired acceleration signal. Therefore, the robot cannot achieve desired acceleration if the plant parameters are different from its model parameters. So, it is necessary to minimize the effect of the model error to achieve robust acceleration performance. In this paper, we propose a method to achieve robust acceleration performance based on the model error compensator. Also, the performance of the model error compensator is improved using the virtual output to satisfy minimum phase condition. The effectiveness of the proposed system is evaluated by the driving experiments of a car robot type inverted pendulum.

Offshore wind power plants has gotten attention worldwide as one of key technology for future energy mix. Recent Japanese policy also promotes offshore wind power plants (OWPPS) on costal waters in the Sea of Japan. On the other hand, those areas are known by notorious winter lightning with upward lightning and large electric charge, that has caused catastrophic damages to onshore wind turbines in past. It is therefore needed stronger lightning risk management for offshore wind turbines than that for onshore. The authors proposed a lightning protection method using an independent lightning tower (ILT) and have stored experience by numerical calculations and small-scale model experiments. However, there still remain several uncertainties in the given data. This paper proposes a new method on CBA (cost-benefit analysis) regarding with the uncertainty. In the concrete, a probability density function, e.g. Gauss Function, is superimposed on quasi-quantitative data with several uncertainty given by experiment tests, which enable optimization of net benefit and objective and quantitative decision making for appropriate risk management even under uncertainty.

The protection of wind turbine blades from lightning damages is increasingly important for an increase of wind power generation. This paper shows the manner of lightning damage of wind turbine blades and the difference between the blades made of various materials. Possible protection measures from lightning damages are shown for various types of wind turbine blades. Moreover we stress that protection of wind turbine blades from winter lightning damages is necessary for us to build wind power generators at the coast faced to the Sea of Japan.

The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of ageing on reaching motion using a simple and quantitative method. An Electronic Evaluation System of Upper Extremity Function incorporating a motion sensor was used to monitor kinematic changes during a whack-a-mole type task. Sixteen healthy elderly adults (3 males and 13 females, mean age 78.8±6.0 years) and nineteen young adults (3 males and 16 females, mean age 22.1±2.8 years) participated in this study. The participants were asked to continue tapping 16 targets randomly presented on the screen. Based on the kinematic data, the tremor value, spatial travel distance, tapping time, and maximal spatial acceleration were calculated. Differences between elderly and young adults were tested using unpaired-t test. Significant differences were observed in all kinematic parameters, suggesting decreased reaching motion in elderly adults. Moreover, overall positive correlations between parameters were found. Our results suggest that kinematic parameters calculated from the motion sensor technology could be useful to evaluate reaching motion quantitatively and simply.

Patient transfer during nursing care imposes a heavy burden on long-term caregivers, frequently causing back pain. It is therefore necessary to improve nursing skills in order to reduce the burden on caregivers so as to prevent accidents. In this study, we fabricated capacitive body-pressure and proximity sensors that use conductive texture for detection, in order to evaluate nursing care movements. To investigate the response of the sensor, an experiment was conducted in which a stainless block was brought close to and then placed in contact with a simulated living body. The results show that the sensor can detect the distance to a living body, in addition to the applied pressure. Based on these response characteristics, a sitting experiment was conducted in which 10-channel body-pressure and proximity sensors were installed. The results indicated that the proposed sensor can be used to analyze the seating position of patients in a wheelchair based on the pressure on the seat surface.
