In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for position sensorless control in PMSM drives, and various methods have been studied. Switching noise is a problem in the low-speed sensorless control method that uses the current slope during PWM. Furthermore, another problem is that the inductance does not appear in a sinusoidal distribution owing to magnetic saturation.In this paper, we improve the sensorless control method that estimates the position from the current slope during PWM, which is greatly affected by switching. Additionally, we build a multi-layer neural network (NN) that directly estimates the position signals by learning a large amount of current data, and verify the driving results in the low-speed range when the learned NN is incorporated into real-time control.

Almost all methods for sensorless drive of permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which estimate rotor phase using fundamental components of stator voltage and current, cannot operate properly at low speed including standstill. For proper sensorless drive of PMSMs, they must be started and driven up to a certain speed by other methods. This paper proposes a new simple vector control method for a starter, which can start and drive PMSMs from rest up to the 50% rated speed. The proposed vector control method has the following useful features: 1) It is constructed on basis of “MIR strategy" together with feedback current control, and has a new specific stability function preventing rotating oscillation; 2) It can start up PMSMs with less than 50-70% rated load; 3) It can prevent over-current even at very low speed including standstill; 4) It can be applied to both of salient and nonsalient pole PMSMs; 5) It does not require motor parameters of high precision; 6) It is simple and required computational load is very light; 7) It starts up PMSMs with pre-specified maximum current and automatically reduces current amplitude to the necessary minimum; 8) It attains pre-specified ratio of effective/reactive currents at steady state; 9) It can estimate properly rotor phase as well as speed at speed of 10% rating or more. This paper presents the new vector control method in detail from principle and confirms its usefulness by experiments.

This paper proposes a novel stage lighting controller in which users can change stage lighting effects by selecting impressions through Kansei words. First, the paper describes a mathematical model that calculates output brightness value of each stage light by emotions to be perceived by audiences and by light information that includes position/orientation, color, and shape of each stage light. Second, a subjective evaluation of stage lightings was carried out in which the subjects observed computer graphics of various stage lightings on a projector screen and answered perceived emotions. Third, a stage lighting system is proposed and implemented, which automatically calculates the output brightness value of each stage light. A user of the system only has to input desired emotions and the light information of each stage light. To evaluate the proposed system, a user study was carried out in which the subjects observed stage lightings generated by the system in a real stage set. The subjects gave positive feedbacks on the usefulness of the system.

Effective Load Dispatching Automatic Controller (ELDAC) is an EMS/SCADA system for Central Load Dispatching Office in Tokyo Electric Power Company Inc. This paper introduces the progress of development of ELDAC, which forecasts demand, sets up the most efficient generation schedule, and controls total power from generators.

This paper discusses the influences of common source inductance in power converter circuits. Common source inductance is the source-side inductance inside a power module, and it shares common circuit parameters with both the gate drive and power circuit. Therefore, common source inductance will influence the switching characteristics of the module. No paper has yet addressed the relationship between common source inductance and switching characteristics such as surge voltage and switching loss. In order to improve the switching characteristics during turn-off operations, this paper presents a design procedure with respect to common source inductance. In addition, experimental results rated at 500V, 40A are shown.

This paper describes a 6.6-kV adjustable-speed motor drive for use in fans, blowers, and pumps without a transformer. The power-conversion system consists of a diode rectifier, a five-level diode-clamped PWM inverter, and a voltage-balancing circuit. A 200-V 5.5-kW downscale model is developed, constructed, and tested. The five-level PWM inverter and the voltage-balancing circuit are studied in detail. Experimental results obtained from testing the 200-V downscale model confirm the viability and effectiveness of the 6.6-kV adjustable-speed motor drive, indicating that the dc mean voltages of the four split dc capacitors are well balanced under all the given operating conditions.
