Time-dependent thermal stress singularities at a semi-infinite crack tip associated with a transient temperature field have been analyzed on an infinite plate with a point heat source near the crack tip. As the heating begins, a mode I singularity increases gradually with time, but, after showing its maximum, decreases to be negative. This singularity variation causes a crack to start growing at some instance, but soon after to stop. That is, crack growth may be controlled, which is desirable for a cutting device for brittle materials. Deflection of a heating point from a crack line results in a mode II stress singularity, which also leads a crack to swerve from the original crack line. In an experiment using glass plates, a crack was successfully controlled to grow and also to branch in any angle toward the heat source as long as the heating location was kept appropriately apart from the crack tip.

In this study, effects of viscosity and aging on plastic behavior of A7475 aluminum alloy under biaxial loading and in stress relaxation at several temperatures, are investigated experimentally, and are analyzed theoretically based on the Two-Factors constitutive concept, which means the overstress concept including aging effect. As much as temperature become higher, viscosity stress increases, on the other hand, aging stress decreases. Both viscosity and aging in axial loading are larger than those in torsional loading. The model based on Two-Factors constitutive concept gives systematic predictions on both plastic flow behavior and relaxation behavior for each loading direction.

A theoretical analysis of a snow-melt road has been performed using a method of imaging line sources. The results showed that: (1) The snow-melt road proposed in this report is assumed to be a uniform concrete road which has a deep heat storage zone 2.9m under the road. (2) The heat loss through the road shoulder can be eliminated by a thermal insulator buried in the shoulder 50cm deep. (3) The power of the proposed type of heat storage is far superior to the standard one. Over 5 days, the surface heat flux of this road is larger than the standard one. (4) The optimal relation between the pitch, the depth of the buried heat transfer pipes and the temperature of water used are shown in the figures. A thermal design process is proposed.

ETS-VII is a test satellite to perform in-orbit demonstration of rendezvous docking (RVD) technology, which will be necessary for advanced space activities in the early 21^st century. ETS-VII successfully performed autonomous RVD in the first experiment flight. But in the second experiment flight, seberal times of Z-thruster misfiring occurred and they prevented for ETS-VII to accomplish docking for three weeks. To verify all technical items, the third experiment flight was replanned on condition that firing Z-thrusters should be minimized. And we modified on-board software to continue approach in case that Z-thrusters misfiring occur. ETS-VII succeeded in the third experiment as the result of these countermeasures. We present replanning of the third experiment flight and its result in this paper.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) have been introduced into the car market but its application has been limited to town use owing to mainly poor battery performance. Superior battery storage energy and power density are required for present systems to be considered for wider range of use. Compared with the well used EV/HEV battery Nickel Metal Hydride and others Lithium-ion battery has superior performance but is only widely used in electrical devices. Lithium-ion battery technology is rarely used in EV/HEVs because of the severe environment of the vehicles. This paper will show the improvements made to overcome this hurdle and present the public road test results of EV propulsion applications of this technology.

災害現場で救助作業を行う, あるいは地雷原でハイパーテザーなどを用いては雷探査を行うことの出来る実用的な移動作業ロボットを開発する要請が高くなっている.この様な目的の実用的な移動作業ロボットには, 不整地環境を自在に移動できる走破性, 長時間走行性能, 作業時にハイパーテザーやマニピュレータなどの作業機器に対して十分なエネルギーを供給できる性能などが必要とされる.そのため, オフロードのバギー車をベースマシンとして利用し, そのアクセルとブレーキ操作をコンピュータ制御して自律的な不整地走破性を実現し, さらにバギー車の原動機を作業機のエネルギー供給機器として転用することで, 実用的な自律走行型バギー車両ロボットを開発した.

材料の複雜な機械的性質が住々にして, その材料の他の簡單な物理的, 機械的性質によつて説明されることがある.こうした立場からシャルピー衝撃値に注目し, このものが近似的に, ブリネル硬さと伸び率とによつて表わし得ることを提言した.しかして本文の主要な部分はシャルピー衝撃値, ブリネル硬さおよび伸び率に関する諸家の各種の実験データを引用し, それらがおゝむね上の提案を支持していることを述べたものである.

A research program for investigating the thermo-elasto-plastic behavior when a laser beam is irradiated to the surface of a thin metal plate with cooling its backside is described in this paper. The residual deformation and the residual internal force occur in a thin plate after the cooling process. Therefore the plastic analyses for the second and third irradiation are more complicated. Based on the radial flow rule, the deformation increments can be decomposed into an elastic component and plasticity component on the interaction curve. In this paper, the plastic analysis for the third irradiation, which is obtained after the first and the second irradiation were performed, is treated. Especially, the distributions of the residual internal forces obtained after cooling process for the third irradiation are revealed.
