Control of turbulent jets has applications in the manufacturing industry. It has been reported that it is possible to control the jet structure by a pure tone. However, in pure-tone-excited jets, the detailed characteristics of the flow fields are unknown. In this paper, a jet excited by a pure tone radiated from the direction perpendicular to the axis is addressed. A woofer was set downstream near the nozzle. As a result, we found that the cross section of the jet was distorted elliptically in shape. It was clarified that the distorted cross section depended on frequency and sound pressure level of the excitation. This phenomenon is very useful to control jet flows, since it can change the characteristics of the flows. We attempted to clarify the mechanism of elliptical distortion of the jet cross section, assuming the mixing region of the jet was organized into many vortex rings in a time-averaged domain.

Vibration suppression is very important to boost the performance of advanced mechatronics devices. It has been expected that technology of smart structure will contribute to the development of small and light-weight mechatronics devices with the required performance. The smart structure is composed of the piezoelectric sensor and actuator in order to reduce the structural vibration. The placement of the piezoelectric actuator and H_2 control system are simultaneously optimized based on genetic algorithm to improve the effect on the vibration suppression. It has been verified by applications with an L-shaped beam and a plate-type smart structures that an enhanced performance for the vibration suppression can be achieved by the proposed optimal design method.

Antenna Hair-type Object for Generating Empathy (AHOGE) is proposed as a familiarity expressive element for helping existing Robot Technology(RT) and IT system, where AHOGE expresses mentality motions based on posture element on nonverbal communications, and then encourages close communication between human and RT IT systems. AHOGE will be applied to communication robots and Internet appliance which work in living environment.

A flow-induced vibration test facility that simulates a hot leg piping of the Japanese sodium-cooled fast reactor (JSFR) with 1/3 scale is used to investigate the flow pattern and pressure fluctuations of the pipe. As the observation of flow pattern, the velocity distributions measured by LDV show the flow pattern is independent of Reynolds number at high Reynolds number. The maximum velocity is about 15 times the mean velocity in the elbow. A statistical analysis of the pressure fluctuations in a separation region shows the power spectrum is of white noise up to 20Hz, the autocorrelation sharply drops to zero less than 1 sec of time interval and the probability density distribution figures almost the Gaussian distribution, excepting its flatness-3 is 3.

神経系を介して生体系と機械系を一体化しようとする試みは, 医用生体工学の中でも最も注目を浴びている領域の一つである。しかしながら, いまだ世界において実際に遠隔地にある外部機器と生体の感覚神経を接続し, 人工感覚を生成するシステムを作成した報告は全く見あたらない。本研究では, 遠隔地にあるロボットハンドを被験者がネットワーク経由で操作を行い, ハンドと対象物との接触情報を, 再度ネットワーク経由で被験者の触感覚神経を刺激することで, ハンドに加えられた感覚刺激を自分の手に感覚が加えられたものとして感じる事を可能とするシステムを開発し, 実験に成功した。本報告ではこの実験システムに関して報告する

This paper describes folding methods of thin flat sheets as well as thin cylinders by modelling folding patterns through Japanese traditional Origami technique. New folding patterns have been deviced in thin flat squared or circular membranes by modifying so called Miura-Ori(one node with 4 folding lines). Some folding patterns in thin cylinders have newly been developed including spiral configurations. Developed foldable cylinders were made by using polymer sheets, and it has been assured that they can be folded very well. The deviced models will make it possible to construct foldable/developable space structures as well as to manufacture foldable bottles for beverages.

Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is regarded as the next generation combustion regime in terms of high thermal efficiency and low emissions. It is difficult to control autoignition timing and combustion duration because they are controlled primarily by the chemical kinetics of fuel-air mixture. In this study, it was investigated the characteristics of autoignition and combustion of natural gas in a 4 stroke HCCI engine. And also, to clarify the influence of n-butane on autoignition and combustion of natural gas, it was changed the blend ratio of n-butane from 0 mol % to 10 mol % in methane/n-butane/air mixtures. Autoignition strongly depends on incylinder gas temperature. Autoignition of natural gas occurs when in-cylinder gas temperature reaches in a range of 1 000 ± 100 K under this experimental condition. To realize high thermal efficiency and low CO emissions, it is necessary to prepare operation conditions that maximum cycle temperature is over 1 500 K. Autoignition temperature is 25 K lower by increasing n-butane blend ratio of 10%. As the blend ratio of n-butane increases, the maximum cycle temperature increases, and THC, CO emissions reduce.

A new methodology with liner space analysis for human performances of ingenuity and skill including sports, drawings and literary works has been developed to clarify the implicit knowledge. The implicit knowledge has contained ideas, feelings, thought processes and patterns style and so on without being clearly formulated and defined in the mind. For analysis of novels by Natsume Soseki, spiral styles were visualized. This spiral style was supported as common sense that Natsume wrote novels theoretically and logically by many researches. Miyazawa's novels were observed the wave styles, which mean his novels involve rich sensitivities. The other implicit knowledge has been also disclosed; the sports performance with high skill has been revealed.

A vortex method is used to simulate several flow fields, such as high Reynolds number flows around bluff bodies, jet flows, and the backward-facing step flows. This method has some advantages : it does not require construction of a complex mesh, the algorithm is simple, numerical viscosity is not inherently included, and numerical results agree well with experimental and other numerical results. However, a few models, which do not satisfy the solenoidal condition, have been used in three-dimensional flow problems. The aims of the present paper are to derive a basic equation concerning the vortex method from the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and to determine the relationship between the vortex method and the Navier-Stokes equations. The basic equation is derived as a simple integral form of the vorticity ; the present equation shown that the evolution of vorticity field is obtained by taking the sum of the two effects : stretching of vorticity and viscosity, which are obtained individually. The solenoidal condition is also discussed in detail the initial approximate vorticity field must be solenoidal.

In high-Reynolds number flow problems, very fine and stretched grids are generally required to resolve accurately thin boundary layers developed along the body surface and so the application of the tetrahedral unstructured grids has several difficulties in computational efficiency and solution accuracy. One promising approach is to use a hybrid unstructured grid technique for the boundary layers; prism, pyramid, tent and tetrahedron. In this paper, the hybrid unstructured grid technique is incorporated into a CFD-based design system, CASPER. To validate the present CFD codes, we carried out the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulations of a military aircraft configuration such as an F-16A in both subsonic and supersonic regions. On wing surface pressure coefficient distributions, longitudinal, lateral and directional forces and moments, the present computed results are quantitatively compared to the wind-tunnel testing data, the Euler computed and the multi-block structured N-S computed results.

In order to establish method to design humanoid robots' motions with fertile emotions, the authors are analysing the Bunraku puppet's motions which are generated by the experts of puppet's manupulation. The many puppet's motions with some functions and with some emotions are observed. To simplify the observed puppet's motions, each puppet's motions are divided into the motion of the puppet's axes(the main part of the motion)and the relative motion(accompaniment). In this paper, the motions of the puppet's axes are analysed. The graphs of the motions of the puppet's axes consist of same factors if the motions have the same functions even though they have the different emotions. The graphs of the same factors have similar forms, but their time length and amplitudes differ, if they have the different emotions. The above factors are computed from the data of the motions of the axes based on the wavelet coefficients of the data which express the local forms of the graphs. The authors analyse how the time length and the amplitude of the factor changes as its emotion changes. This knowledge is applied to generate humanoid robots' motions with fertile emotions from their motions with no emotion.

We examined the drag and thrust efficiency of two airship models with a stern propeller. There is a interaction between the airship hull and the propeller. To obtain an understanding of the interaction, we measured the form drag of the airships with and without a propeller, and calculated the propeller efficiency and the total efficiency of airships. We also compared the results for two airships. Furthermore we carried out inviscid computation for the effect of the propeller on airship efficiency. It was clarified that there are two patterns for the direct effect of the propeller on the pressure on the hull surface. One is good for the airship hull and the other is undesirable.
