This paper describes an evaluation to verify the reliability, sensitivity, and effectiveness of the checklist. An improvement of the checklist is also described. The checklist, based on flow theory, was developed as a support tool for teachers and courseware designers to redesign learning materials and environments from the view point of motivational design. After the literature review of the applied research on flow theory to the educational field, it is found that there are few practical tools proposed. This paper focuses on the formative evaluation of the flow-theory-based checklist, which has been already proposed, and the verification of its reliability, sensitivity, and effectiveness. To carry out the whole evaluation experiment, the e-learning materials were developed and the preliminary experiment, the expert review, and the evaluation experiment were performed. As a result, the checklist is found to be practical enough and the future tasks are clarified.

The authors have developed a learning support system based on question-posing by learners and have applied it to a distributed asynchronous environment since 2006. Based on the results of application, they enhanced the system. In this paper, they analyzed the results of application in terms of effectiveness of the system to a distributed asynchronous environment. As the analytical results, they found the learners who actively posed questions marked higher score of the final examination than the learners who inactively posed, and that the learners who actively posed high quality questions increased the score of the midterm examination to the score of the final examination than the learners who inactively posed. In addition, they found providing the system motivated learners to learn.

This article describes the results of a study that reveals previously hidden facts from a large amount of behavioral data currently being collected in the educational field (educational big data) by individually excluding those factors that affect human behavior on the basis of cognitive psychological findings. Furthermore, actual cases are presented to show that the information revealed in this study can be a driving force for changing the learning behavior of individual children, and consequently solve various educational problems. In order to extract meaningful information from the big data collected from human behavior, a deep understanding of human behavior is essential. Conversely, with a deep understanding of humans, big data that are a simple mass of information could become an abundant source of information.

Recently beginners’ programming courses for university freshmen have high number of dropout and low achievers. To find the cause of this problem, this study investigated into students in beginners’ programming course based on learning strategies and programming test with gradual level. These investigations have two research questions: 1) What kind of learning strategies students have, which affect their grade and learning performance? 2) What type of questions in the programming test students cannot answer, and in particular the differences in the unanswered questions that exist among four student groups with the learning levels. The result shows the evident differences about the learning strategies and the programming test among the four student groups with the learning levels. Additionally this study did discriminant analysis to classify these four groups and shows equations that can classify more than 85% of all students correctly. We finally give some learning support-rules for the programming course.

Since the 1991 amendment of the Standards for the Establishment of Universities, physical education (PE) courses in the liberal arts program have been reduced or abolished in several universities. However, the Japanese Association of University Physical Education and Sports (JAUPES) and some universities have continued efforts for the survival of PE. In these activities, many workshops and studies for faculty development (FD) have been implemented. Besides, several classes in PE have been improved. In this paper, we will outline these trends in the FD for PE.

This paper provides an overview of research trends around three First Principles regarding the design of instruction. Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction proposes five common principles based on constructivist theories of instructional design. Reigeluth adopted them as foundational principles in his work, together with situational principles to propose a scheme of common knowledge base. Keller has proposed First Principles of Motivation to Learn, consisting of five ground rules based on commonly used ARCS Model with a newly added factor of “Volition.” It reflects current research focus on self-regulated learning. Parrish’s Aesthetics Principle of Instructional Design tries to advocate aesthetic consideration to design not only learning materials, but also experiences of learning.

The aim of this study is to propose educational policies because it is ethically impossible for school education to implement empirical and experimental studies. For this purpose, we employ agent-based simulation to model academic skills of students. In the simulation model, we utilize three kinds of learning models, informational approach model, learning by teaching model and motivation for learning model, from learning theory in the literature, and then investigate how many teachers should be allocated to each school in order to improve academic abilities of students. Our main finding is twofold: First, any staffing decreases the abilities of the top 10%. Second, in contrast, the increase of those of the bottom 10% may depend on the staffing and it is in proportion to the number of teachers in elementary schools.

During fiscal year 2010, I. hospital changed its educational modality for new nurses from conventional classroom education to participatory education using an e-learning. Results show that 1) new nurses became able to learn anytime and anywhere. 2) Irrespective of the time and place, senior nurses became able to give advice related to questions and problems that new nurses had encountered according to a specific scenario. 3) The new-nurses training program which utilized e-learning based on the image showed the effect to the new nurse technical acquisition also from the result of the skill test and the interview.

This paper describes Japanese informatics education in new curriculum. In elementary schools pupils experience programming in each subject. In junior high schools students make robot control and communication programs. In high schools students learn algorithm, database, data science and information systems.
