The purpose of this paper is to introduce Japanese informatics education from elementary school through high school. To this end, we discussed what competencies are expected to be developed by programming education, the Japanese curriculum standard for informatics subjects, and what should be considered in future programming education. To concretize the discussion, we examined previous research about problem-solving skills, especially in Computational Thinking, the characteristics of the high school informatics I text, and standardized tests of informatics which are deeply related to the Japanese curriculum standard.

In recent years, learning analytics, educational data mining, and institutional research have been developed as research areas on data utilization in education and learning. In particular, knowledge of many studies on utilization of predictive models by machine learning is accumulating. In this paper, the various fields of data utilization in education and learning are first reviewed, and then the trends in research on the use of predictive models in these fields and our research so far are introduced. Finally, future issues in this field are summarized.

<p>In 2008 and 2009, we practiced Cooperative Learning (CL) twice between learners of Japanese as a second language in Hong Kong and trainees to be a Japanese teacher in Kyoto by using SNS. The questionnaire after CL showed that 2008-CL was not fully activated in terms of 'social presence' and 'social support'. In 2009-CL, we improved the following points to get the students to feel social presence and social support; 1) corrections should be directly written in SNS, not in attached files, so that they are visible, 2) some of the functions of SNS are refined, 3) CL is performed in a group, not in pair, 4) corrections are given not only to a part of the learners' essays, but also to all parts, 5) instructors take the role of facilitators. Due to these improvements, 2009-CL became more activated than 2008-CL.</p>

First-year spring semester grades are an important factor in whether or not a student will graduate within the standard academic year. It has been mentioned that the GPA in the spring semester of the first year is related to variables known before admission, placement tests, absence rate, etc. However, it is late in the process of determining grades and it is difficult to determine which students should be intervened upon and how many students should be intervened upon because the status of students within the semester is unknown. There have been few studies to clarify how many students and how their status transitions during the spring semester of the first year. In this study, we propose a method to predict how students' GPA changes week by week during the semester, capture it as a time series vector, and use the transition results of the predicted GPA to classify students. By identifying the differences between the typed groups, we can clarify how much and from which times students decline during the semester, and where and when interventions should be made.

In various assessment contexts including entrance examinations, educational assessments, and personnel appraisals, performance assessment has attracted much attention to measure examinees’ higher order abilities. Nevertheless, low assessment reliability and high costs of scoring are regarded as persistent difficulties hindering performance assessment. To resolve these shortcomings, item response theory models that incorporate rater and task characteristic parameters and automated essay scoring methods have been proposed recently. This paper introduces state-of-the-art topics for these technologies.

This paper analyzes the question “How can we give feedback on learning assessment to promote learners’ active learning?” based on the results of class practice. In this class, we designed and implemented a system that allows learners to check the results of their assessments online. In this paper, we analyzed the impact of visualization and sharing of assessments on learning behavior from the perspective of self-regulated learning and engagement, based on online logs of learning behavior, records of assignment submissions, assessment records of learning behavior and assignments, and responses to a questionnaire survey by learners. The results suggest that students’ learning behaviors are characterized by their goals and types of self-regulation, and that the visualization and sharing of assessments leads to the maintenance of motivation and proactive learning planning.

Educational Big Data (EBD) and Learning Analytics (LA) have being attracted enormous attention in recent years. Data collection process is the first step of EBD and LA. Based on the data source, data collection can be classified into two categories: manual data collection, and automatic data collection. This paper describes two educational systems: SCROLL (System for Capturing, Reusing, Reminding Of Learning Logs) as manual data collection and, M2B (Moodle, Mahara, Booklooper) as automatic data collection.

This article describes the state-of-the-art research on the pedagogical agent technology as a vehicle to advance theories of how people learn. We review different types of pedagogical agents and their roles. In this article, we are particularly interested in an interactive pedagogical agent, called a teachable agent. We provide detailed explanations about different types of teachable agents with some pointers to actual implementations. We discuss how different types of teachable agents works and the advantages and disadvantages of each type. We then discuss how teachable agents help advance learning science research. We introduce SimStudent as an instance of a teachable agent and how it has been used in various research projects. We conclude the article with future research issues.

This paper discusses the design principles for collaborative learning environments based on the Emergent Division of Labor (EDL) theory. In recent research in the learning sciences, two theories of regulation of learning have emerged; Shared Epistemic Agency (SEA) and Socially Shared Regulation of Learning (SSRL), which aim to theorize group-level of epistemic agency and metacognitive regulation of collaborative learning. We will introduce the theories of SEA and SSRL, research in CSCL with systems related to the two theories, and following the current trend in research, will discuss and elaborate on the EDL theory and the design principles for the development of the learning environments aimed at fostering the students’ full participation in collaborative learning. We will then propose three additional design principles for the collaborative learning environment based on the EDL theory.

<p>Systematic organizational support is necessary to use e-Learning effectively at higher education institutions. This paper suggests the "University e-Learning Management Model" which considers the characteristics of management structure of higher education institutions and the problems of e-Learning. The model has been created based on prior research and our experiences and gone through revisions by applying to e-Learning management of a college in two iterations. Empirical data confirmed the effects of the Model on improved communication and better reaction among stakeholders.</p>

This paper provides readers with some suggestions on how to understand learning assessment using qualitative data, and sides with researchers who use/want to/are wondering whether to use qualitative data. In addition, the paper aims to put modes of learning assessment using qualitative data in JSiSE on the agenda for discussion. As an assertion of the paper, we hold up the research-question-first that designs research from the research-question. Moreover, we try to make a JSiSE hypothesis-deduction model and to summarize several requirements for research and paper in empirical and interpretive researches. In order to resolve conflicts between mode of thought based on each research, we argue about that (i) researchers and readers/reviewers need to be aware of their own paradigms and that (ii) it is necessary that some comments based on logico-scientific mode are translated into one based on narrative mode.

In this paper, we introduce school-wide teaching and learning support practices by using digital learning tools for students and faculties during the COVID-19 pandemic. Right after the COVID-19 pandemic affected the higher-education in Japan, Osaka University built a Teaching Class Support and Response Team during the new semester to develop school-wide online teaching and learning supports due to the campus closure. The team offers multi-faceted support tools such as LMS help desk, orientation videos via YouTube channel for first-year students, and teaching online guidelines during the semester. Through our practices, we find the significant issue of teaching at the university during the COVID-19 era. The issue is: how we conduct classes to combine face-to-face and learning online in the same semester. To resolve this issue, we believe that universities need to develop an organizational comprehensive support system for teaching and learning. We also expect that scholars would share their expertise, idea, and practices of teaching under practices the COVID-19 pandemic by using an academic society.

In 2020, almost all universities students enrolled in on-campus programs started implementing remote learning due to the influence of COVID-19. Data were collected from 514 university students enrolled in on-campus programs (352 students in the Kanto area and 162 students in the Kansai area). Various aspects of their remote learning experiences were examined, including their understanding through remote learning; difficulty in maintaining self-motivation when learning on one’s own. The results revealed a positive relationship between learning motivation and understanding, which implies that there is a need to examine the motivation level when providing and implementing remote learning lessons for students enrolled in on-campus programs.

Institutional Research (IR) has been receiving much attention in Japanese higher education. In order to guarantee the educational quality of university, it has been discussed how to utilize the educational big data. In this paper, it is considered to construct models of students’ learning states using large-scale students’ learning data collected through the baccalaureate degree program based on some machine learning methods. In this research, data in 5 years are utilized in order to investigate the generalization ability of the models, and the performances of some machine learning methods are compared. From the experimental results, it is indicated that the models of students’ learning states with high generalization ability can be constructed. Its capability of application to enrollment management is also discussed from experimental results.

In today’s “post-truth” era, lay citizens have difficulty trusting and judging what is true based on their integrated comprehension of various information. The amount, diversity, and complexity of information has increased dramatically causing rampant conflicting information originating even from reliable sources in topics such as vaccines, diets, educational methods, and so on. This paper reviews research in epistemic cognition that explores new ways of information literacy in order to improve the abovementioned situation. Based on the AIR model for epistemic cognition, which places particular emphasis on evidential practices, we explain the Grasp of Evidence framework which captures competencies that include evaluation, interpretation, and integration of evidence, as well as evaluation of testimonies of experts who provide such information. Our three projects that explore innovative forms of information literacy education based on the framework are also described in this paper.

The author discusses the significance of qualitative research methodology in educational technology research. For that purpose, he first describes what qualitative research is, showing its characteristics, process, differences from quantitative research, crucial points for its understanding and practice, generalizability and research evaluation. Then he discusses its significance in educational technology research, in terms of from technology-push to requirement-pull, from research for the research article’s own to effective system development, from product-focused to process-focused, necessity of goal-free evaluation, research on teachers who are the gate keepers of educational technology, and educational research through educational technology research.
