This article theoretically examines components of the Epigenetic Chart in Erikson's Theory focusing on the phenomenon of "romance for identity," including the positioning of this phenomenon in the Epigenetic Chart, interpretation of the phenomenon from the perspective of psychodynamic theory, characteristics of "affectionate dating," which is a form of "romance for identity" with improved intimacy, and the methodology of report analysis, from the perspective of "comprehensive psychology." The results indicated that "romance for identity" is the phenomenon in which adolescents with immature identity and insufficient intimacy are required to have close relationships with others in dating, use their limited psychological energy for identity formation, the most critical concern in adolescence, and their inevitable inability to care for others. Concepts of the Epigenetic Chart in Erikson's and psychodynamic theory might help explain the above phenomenon. Moreover, we have discussed the methodology, reliability, validity, and effectiveness of report analysis.

The present study investigated relationships between reasons for having sexual intercourse with an intimate partner; satisfaction with sexual intercourse and satisfaction with their relationship among university students. The participants were 141 university students who have intimate partners and have sexual intercourse with their partner. They were asked to respond to 45 questions relating to reasons for having sexual intercourse with their partner. In addition, there were a question relating to satisfaction with sexual intercourse; and further a question relating to satisfaction with their relationship. A results of factor analysis identified six factors; sexual desire, confirmation of their love, demand of their partner, pressure from society to have sexual intercourse, a method of control, and seizing an opportunity. Structural equation modeling showed that confirmation of their love increased their satisfaction with sexual intercourse, which in turn raised their satisfaction with their relationship. In contrast, in the case of males, pressure to have sexual intercourse lowered their satisfaction with sexual intercourse, and consequently their satisfaction with their relationship went down.

Psychological characteristics of young people not desiring a steady romantic relationship (Love-Unnecessary group) were compared with those that desired the steady relationship that they had (Love group), and those that desired a steady relationships that they did not have (Love-Longing group), from the perspectives of ego development, mental health, and individualism. A survey inquiring about psychological stress reactions, identity, sense of fulfillment, individualism, state of the romantic relationship, and the reason for not desiring a steady relationship, was conducted with university students (n =1350). The results indicated that 18.0 % of the participants belonged to the Love-Unnecessary group. Moreover, there was a bigger proportion of girls in the Love group and a bigger proportion of boys in the Love-Longing group, whereas no significant differences were observed in the proportion of boys to girls in the Love-Unnecessary group. Furthermore, the Love group scored high in identity establishment and mental health, whereas the Love-Longing group scored moderately in identity establishment and low in mental health. The Love-Unnecessary group scored low in identity establishment, lacked motivation, and displayed arbitrary thinking.

The capacity to be alone (CBA) is a concept proposed by Winnicott. A scale for assessing CBA that can measure anxiety in both solitude and individuation was developed, and the relationship between acquiring CBA and the internal object was investigated. University students (N = 220) responded to a questionnaire. Factor analysis of their responses using principle factor method and Varimax rotation indicated that “the Scale of Anxiety about Being Alone” consisted of two factors: “Avoidance of intimacy” “Anxiety about solitude”.Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the two factors were indicative of sufficient reliability (.91 and .90, respectively). Moreover the difference in the inner object among the following groups: “High-CBA”, “Anxiety about solitude”, “Anxiety about intimacy” and “Low-CBA”, divided by each factor score was analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance. The results indicated that “High-CBA” was characterized by an inconsistent object rather than by a good, or a bad object. The group with anxiety about solitude, which mostly tended to imagine a good object, also tended to recollect an inconsistent object. This result suggested they were vulnerable to object constancy.

In modern society, the context to which youth belongs has become more diversified and the roles that young people play are also diversifying. Further, the modern society makes it difficult to form a singular identity. The identity of “plural identities” has been proposed as a form of identity adapted by modern society. This study considered the identity formation methods undertaken by modern youth, focusing on plural identities.In the first study, we first classified youth identity into the following three types—single identity, plural identity, and identity diffusion. Further, in our second study, interviews were conducted to examine the varying characteristics of the three identities. A young man, who was categorized as having a single identity required to choose whether or not to present himself in any given situation, depending on the friendliness and acceptance of the person he was facing. However, youth classified as having multiple identities were able to alter themselves according to the social demands placed on them, and they formed different identities for each scene.

This study examined whether pubertal development influenced on adolescent aggression directly or this effect was mediated by athletic competence and body satisfaction. The pubertal development was assessed in terms of pubertal status and pubertal timing. Junior high school students (n=551) including 273 girls and 278 boys were asked to complete questionnaires. Main results were as the follows: (1) For girls, at any pubertal status and pubertal timing, athletic competence positively predicted linguistic aggression and negatively predicted hostility. (2) For boys, pubertal status positively predicted hostility. In addition, earlier matured boys showed higher athletic competence and body satisfaction than the counterparts; athletic competence positively predicted physical and linguistic aggression; and body satisfaction positively predicted linguistic aggression and negatively predicted physical aggression and hostility.

The life of the American novelist Margaret Mitchell was examined as a case study of an unhealthy “foreclosure status” that transformed into a state of “diffusion”. The relationship between Mitchell and her mother indicated the following: (1) Mitchell had become subordinate to her mother through the pressure from her mother and her sense of inferiority towards her mother (Subordination with Conflict). Consequently, Mitchell studied to become a doctor to conform to her motherʼs wish, although it was opposed to her desire. (2) This caused her to enter an unhealthy “closed foreclosure”, which is characterized by the fear that her mother might deny or leave her. (3) She persisted in the goal of becoming a doctor while her mother was alive and consequently experienced a high degree of stress. She abandoned this goal after her motherʼs death and reached a state of diffusion. (4) She could not independently explore her identity even after her mother died, because she had suppressed herself. A new hypothesis concerning mother-daughter relationships resulting in unhealthy foreclosure is developed by analyzing Margaret Mitchellʼs life. 本研究は,共感性を多次元的なものと定義し,犯罪者と一般青年との比較を通して,犯罪者の共感性の特徴について明らかにしようとするものである。その結果,犯罪者は,他者の不運な感情体験や苦しみに対して同情的で,何らかの配慮をすることに方向づけられやすい一方で,他者の立場にたって物事をとらえる視点が十分に高くない「アンバランスな共感性」を持つことが示された。また,この状態では,他者の苦しみによって,自分の苦しみが増大することを抑制する自己防御システムが働きにくくなることが推測された。

This study examined the effect of over-adaptation on career decision-making in adolescents and compared the differences between Japanese and Chinese adolescents. The participants were 308 university students in Japan (male=164; female=143; unknown=1) and 278 university students in China (male=140; female=138). The results showed that Japanese adolescents who had low-level external aspect (EA) and low-level internal aspect (IA) of over-adaptation received higher ratings in the questionnaire on career decision-making than others. This suggests that internal adaptation plays an important role in Japanese career decision-making. In contrast, Chinese adolescents who had high and average levels of EA and IA, had higher ratings in career decision-making than those with low-level EA. This implies that external adaptation influences career decision-making in Chinese.

This study investigated a proposed structural model of the relationship between over-adaptation and depression in college students. This model assumed that: (1) self- and other-perception (self-insufficiency and cynicism) predict external over-adaptive behavior (self-inhibition and other-oriented behavior); and (2) over-adaptation predicts depression. A total of 260 Japanese college students (110 men and 150 women undergraduates) completed a questionnaire. The structural model was analysed through the structural equation modeling (SEM). The results indicated that: (1) self-insufficiency predicted over-adaptive behavior positively (both men and women); (2) cynicism positively predicted self-insufficiency (both men and women) and self-inhibition (women only); and (3) depression was positively predicted directly by self-insufficiency (both male and female) and self-inhibition (male only). These results suggest that self-sufficiency and self-inhibition, i.e. psychological adaptation-relating variables, mainly affect depression. Finally, gender differences were discussed.
