Squalene (SQ), a main component of human sebum, is readily photooxidized by exposure to sunlight, producing six squalene monohydroperoxide (SQ-OOH) isomers. Despite its known connection to various skin conditions, few studies have sought to analyze SQ-OOH at the isomeric level. In this study, we aimed to develop a method to discriminate each SQ-OOH isomer with the use of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The six standard SQ-OOH isomers were prepared by photooxidizing SQ in the presence of rose bengal, a photosensitizer, and isolated by semipreparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). To purify each isomer, 2-methoxypropene, which reversibly reacts with the hydroperoxide group of SQ-OOH, was utilized. Product ion scanning was then performed on the standard SQ-OOH isomers in the absence and presence of the sodium ion. In the absence of the sodium ion, the fragmentation patterns produced by atmospheric pressure chemical ionization were similar between the isomers, whereas in the presence of the sodium ion by electrospray ionization, unique fragmentation patterns were achieved. Based on these fragment ions, HPLC-MS/MS multiple reaction monitoring analysis was conducted on a mixture of the standard SQ-OOH isomers. We achieved discrimination of SQ-OOH isomers with high selectivity and detected SQ-OOH isomers at nanogram levels. These results may improve our understanding of the effect of SQ-OOH on skin conditions as well as the mechanism behind SQ peroxidation.

In his The Elements of Law, De Cive, and Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes says that the English common lawyers in the seventeenth century confused lex with jus, law with right. He emphasizes that "Right, consisteth in liberty to do, or to forbear; whereas Law, determinth, and bindeth to one of them." (Leviathan,117) In brief, he regards right as liberty, or the absence of obligation and law as restraint, or the imposition of obligation. And he insists on a sharp distinction between right and law, and that right is priority of law. Hobbes's distinction between right and law is criticized by many commentators. For example, Richard Peters criticizes the word right Hobbes says for "a strange use." On the other hand, Leo Strauss admits the comment that Hobbes subordinates law to right. And Richard Tuck follows Strauss. Which comments are true? This is one of my subjects, though it is very difficult to solve. I dealt with this subject by Hobbes's method and his linguistic theory in De Corpore. And I reached the conclusion that the comment of Strauss is more proper than that of R. Peters.

Reading tests were made with Ishihara's Charts (10th edition) under incandescent lamps, daylight fluorescent lamps. de luxe daylight fluorescent lamps, mixed light of daylight fluorescent lamps and incandescent lamps, and neutral daylight. The result was as follows: The reading accuracy was highest under the de luxe daylight fluorescent lamp, and neutral daylight. the daylight fluorcscent lamp, mixed light of the daylight fluorescent and the incandescent lamps followed in this order with slight differences, and the incandescent lamp was the lowest.
