Low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra of electron-hole systems in Si nanowires (NWs) prepared by thermal oxidization of Si fin structures were studied. Mapping of PL reveals that NWs with uniform width are formed over a large area. Annealing temperature dependence of PL peak intensities was maximized at 400 °C for each NW type, which are consistent with previous reports. Microfluidics is an emerging and promising interdisciplinary technology which offers powerful platforms for precise production of novel functional materials (e.g., emulsion droplets, microcapsules, and nanoparticles as drug delivery vehicles- and drug molecules) as well as high-throughput analyses (e.g., bioassays, detection, and diagnostics). In particular, multiphase microfluidics is a rapidly growing technology and has beneficial applications in various fields including biomedicals, chemicals, and foods. In this review, we first describe the fundamentals and latest developments in multiphase microfluidics for producing biocompatible materials that are precisely controlled in size, shape, internal morphology and composition. We next describe some microfluidic applications that synthesize drug molecules, handle biological substances and biological units, and imitate biological organs. We also highlight and discuss design, applications and scale up of droplet- and flow-based microfluidic devices used for drug discovery and delivery.

In this letter, we first introduce a stronger notion of the optimistic achievable coding rate and discuss a coding theorem. Next, we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which the coding rates of all the optimal FF codes asymptotically converge to a constant.

In this paper we consider fixed-to-fixed length (FF) coding of a general source X with vanishing error probability and define two kinds of optimalities with respect to the coding rate and the redundancy, where the redundancy is defined as the difference between the coding rate and the symbolwise ideal codeword length. We first show that the infimum achievable redundancy coincides with the asymptotic width W(X) of the entropy spectrum. Next, we consider the two sets $\mCH(\bX)$ and $\mCW(\bX)$ and investigate relationships between them, where $\mCH(\bX)$ and $\mCW(\bX)$ denote the sets of all the optimal FF codes with respect to the coding rate and the redundancy, respectively. We give two necessary and sufficient conditions corresponding to $\mCH(\bX) \subseteq \mCW(\bX)$ and $\mCW(\bX) \subseteq \mCH(\bX)$, respectively. We can also show the existence of an FF code that is optimal with respect to both the redundancy and the coding rate.

ランカマキリは花に類似した姿をした擬態昆虫である。これまでに我々は、ランカマキリの体色を生成する色素分子としてキサントマチンを同定した。しかし、キサントマチン自体は昆虫において広く存在する色素であり、これがどのようにして特有のピンク色を形成しているのかは不明であった。本研究の生化学的解析により、キサントマチンには実は3種類の類縁分子が存在し、その組成の違いによって異なる体色が生成されると示唆された。また、電子顕微鏡を用いた観察により、ランカマキリ体内においてはキサントマチン分子が特殊な細胞内構造を取っていることが明らかになった。これらのメカニズムによって特有の体色が生成されると考えられた。

A reduction method of a lightning overvoltage on a Power Conditioning System (PCS) is investigated in this paper. The capacitors installed between the circuit and grounding terminal in the PCS determine the response against a first transient. The inductances, winding capacitances and excitation losses of the coils for the filter in the PCS should be also considered for estimating the overvoltage to ground at an input terminal of the PCS. The dominant factors of the maximum overvoltage are a grounding resistance, capacitances between a frame and output terminal of a solar panel and those between the PCS and ground. The overvoltage is decreased with decreasing the grounding resistance of the structure for the solar panels. The grounding resistance of the PCS has a minor effect on the overvoltage. The overvoltage can be reduced when a common grounding method is applied. A length of a cable between the output terminal of the solar panel and the input terminal of the PCS should be as short as possible.

The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between baseline beta cell function and future glycated albumin (GA) to glycated hemoglobin ratio (GA/HbA1c) in patients with type 2 diabetes. In our retrospective cohort, 210 type 2 diabetic patients who had been admitted to our hospital and in whom HbA1c and GA had been measured at baseline and 2 years after admission were included in this study. Baseline beta cell function was assessed by postprandial C-peptide immunoreactivity index (PCPRI) during admission. With intensification of treatment during admission, HbA1c and GA were significantly decreased 1 year and 2 years after admission. While baseline HbA1c was not significantly correlated with HbA1c after 2 years, baseline GA/HbA1c was strongly correlated with GA/HbA1c after 2 years (r = 0.575, P <0.001). When the patients were divided into two groups according to median PCPRI, patients with low PCPRI showed higher GA/HbA1c both at baseline and after 2 years compared to those with high PCPRI. There was a significant negative correlation between PCPRI and GA/HbA1c after 2 years (r = -0.379, P <0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that PCPRI was an independent predictor of GA/HbA1c after 2 years. In conclusion, our findings suggest that lower beta cell function is associated with sustained higher GA/HbA1c ratio in patients with type 2 diabetes.
