We investigated the growth, thermotolerance, and fatty acid composition of the green alga Desmodesmus sp., which was isolated from a freshwater puddle in Ibaraki, Japan. Incubation experiments on the isolated strain were performed at a range of temperatures (20–40°C) with continuous illumination (110 µmol photons m−2 s−1) and nutrient-replete medium. High specific growth rates of 1.14–1.62 day−1 were observed at 20–35°C, but growth rates declined to 0.59 day−1 at 40°C. Lipid contents were 13.2%–14.4% (% dry weight) at 20–35°C and increased to 21.3% at 40°C. Some microalgae are known to regulate membrane fluidity by changing their fatty acid compositions in response to changes in ambient temperature. We found that the major polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA; C18:3 ω3) of Desmodesmus sp. was negatively correlated with water temperature. By contrast, no significant relationship was identified between temperature and the ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids. The negative relationship between ω3 PUFA composition and temperature was stronger among thermotolerant as opposed to non-thermotolerant microalgae. This suggests that thermotolerant Desmodesmus sp. can grow at high temperatures by altering its fatty acid composition to affect membrane fluidity.

ユーラシアカワウソLutra lutraが経済成長に伴う環境変化からどのような影響を受けるのか調べることを目的に,工業集積の進む韓国慶尚南道の海岸における本種の生息痕を1982年,1991-94年,2002年および2009年にわたってモニタリングした。慶尚南道馬山地域における糞密度は,1990年代には減少傾向を示したが,2000年代後半には回復傾向に転じた。回復傾向は釜山市などでも見られた。本種が安定的に生息する海域のCODは約4mg/L以下のレベルであった。糞が多く見られたのは,岬の湾口にある磯海岸,海岸近くの小島,河川の人工湖などであり,これらは餌資源の多いことや,隠れ場所として適していることが共通していた。本種は人工護岸のわずかな隙間や,沖合の水産養殖イカダの上をサインポストとして利用しており,人工環境への適応力も備えていた。調査期間中に調査地の陸域における各種経済指標は高い伸びを示したが,湾奥部におけるカワウソが生息しない地域が若干広がったことを除くと,陸域における経済発展や開発は本種の生息に直接的な影響は与えないことがわかった。Distribution of otter spraints along sea coasts at Masan area of Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea was monitored for 27 years from 1982, 1991-94, 2002 to 2009. Densities of spraints once decreased in the 1990's. In the late 2000's, however, this turned to a tendency to increase, although recovery was insufficient. Similar recovery was also identified in Busan. Spraints were not found at areas that were far from the closed-off section of the bay by 0-9km. The otters were able to inhabit up to the vicinity of industrialized area. At coasts where otter spraints were regularly found, COD level was around 4mg/L. Spraints were often found at rocky coasts along capes, heads of bays, small islets and reservoirs, indicating that prey fish was abundant in those areas. At coasts with steep artificial walls, otters managed to find landing places by locating narrow gaps and harbors. Otherwise, they used coastal fishpens as signposts, indicating their adaptability to artificial environments. Economic indicators in the land area of the investigation place heightened considerably during the monitoring period. The above findings indicate that terrestrial economic growth does not necessarily lead to the decrease of the otter population.

This paper gives the experimental results obtained with a two-stroke cycle single-cylinder research engine using an electrically heated combustion chamber to simulate the combustion chamber of a low-heat-rejection(LHR) DI diesel engine with the M-combustion system. In this report, the experiment was performed to investigate the influences of combustion chamber surface temperature and swirl ratio on the combustion of a LHR DI diesel engine with the M-conbustion system. It is found that the combustion of fuel deposited on the surface is greatly affected by the combustion chamber surface temperature, and the diesel combustion is controlled by the swirl and the surface temperature of the combustion chamber.

The H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) is an unmanned transfer vehicle that will rendezvous with manned facilities and deliver up to six tons of cargo. HTV is a key space transportation system technology in Japan together with the H-IIA/H-IIB launch vehicle and is designed to fully satisfy the manned safety requirements of the International Space Station (ISS) program. Therefore, the technology and its system acquired through HTV development and operation will be widely utilized in future manned transportation and lunar and planetary exploration missions.

Unification of Germany has put East Germany in the position of being a laboratory, a good example of areal changes in the world. At the time of unification the share of East Germany in the whole German GDP was only 7.2% in 1991, but owing to large transfers for East Germany and to the foreign investments, it became 10.9% in 1995. Unification of the currency brought a favorable exchange rate (1 : 1) for East German, but it caused a weakening of the competitive power of East German industries on the world market. All state owned properties and enterprises were put under the control of Treuhandanstalt, which reprivatised, privatised or sold them to West German or foreign companies. Many profitable enterprises were bought as “fillet” by West German big companies and the rest as “fat and bone” by foreign companies, among which French, USA and British dominated. The areal structure of economy in East Germany was worked out by some geographers during the age of DDR (German Democratic Republic), but none have yet tried, because the time is not sufficient since the unification of Germany. The contrast between “Industrial South and Agricultural North” is very clear and rooted in natural conditions and in a long history. Five such economic regions may be distinguishable: agro-industrial region along Baltic coast, agricultural region on lowland in the Middle, mining and industrial region in the South, Sachsen=Thüringen industrial region, and Berlin.

Ascochlorin and its analogs were isolated from the filter cake of the fermented broth of a fungus, Ascochyta viciae Libert; the compounds obtained were ascochlorin, LL-Z1272δ, LL-Z1272 ε, ascofuranone, ascofuranol and a new analog, C23H31ClO5. Some of these prenyl phenols show hypolipidemic activity in both normolipidemic and hyperlipidemic rats. Details of the structure determination for ascochlorin are presented. The structure of the new analog was elucidated as 4'-hydroxy-5'-hydroascochlorin.

A new antibiotic with hypolipidemic activity, ascofuranone, C23H29C1O5, and related substance, ascofuranol, C23H31C1O5, were isolated from the filter cake of the fermented broth of Ascochyta viciae LIBERT, an ascochlorin-producing fungus, and their structures were elucidated. They possess 3-substituted-5-chloro-orcylaldehyde moiety with novel sesquiterpenyl side chains.
