Because motion capture system enabled us to capture a number of human motions, the demand for a method to easily browse the captured motion database has been increasing. In this paper, we propose a method to generate simple visual outlines of motion clips, for the purpose of efficient motion data browsing. Our method unfolds a motion clip into a 2D stripe of keyframes along a timeline that is based on semantic keyframe extraction and the best view point selection for each keyframes. With our visualization, timing and order of actions in the motions are clearly visible and the contents of multiple motions are easily comparable. In addition, because our method is applicable for a wide variety of motions, it can generate outlines for a large amount of motions fully automatically.

We have studied an ester prodrug of a carbapenem to develop a potent orally active β-lactam antibiotic. A variety of 1β-methylcarbapenem derivatives have been synthesized. We have found that some derivatives having an amide group in the C-2 side chain show potent and well balanced antibacterial activities as well as high stability against dehydropeptidase-I. Oral absorption of derivatives has been optimized by modifying the C-3 ester promoiety. Pivaloyloxymethyl (1R, 5S, 6S)-6-[(R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-1-methyl-2-[(R)-5-oxopyrrolidin-3-ylthio]-1-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate, CS-834, has been selected as the most promising compound for further evaluation.

In order to investigate any role of minerals in autistic disorders, we measured 24 mineral contents in scalp hair samples of 360 autistic children and compared with those of healthy controls. In the male autistic group aged 4-9 years (N=200), the geometric means of many element levels, namely not only essential minerals such as cobalt, chromium, iodine, molybdenum and phosphorus, but also nickel, boron, cadmium and lead were significantly lower than those in the control group (p<0.001). In contrast, selenium level was significantly higher in the autistic group. On the mercury levels, no significant difference was observed between the two groups, though with a tendency of low concentration in the autistic group. Similar mineral imbalance profiles with a global mineral deficiency were observed in the other autistic groups aged 0-3 and 10-15 years (N=85 and 20) and also in the female autistic groups. In addition, high accumulation of a few elements such as iron, manganese, chromium, copper, sodium, aluminum, cadmium, lead, or mercury was observed in some autistic individuals. These findings indicate that autistic children are suffered from a global mineral deficiency in various trace elements, with some individuals being exposed to a marked accumulation of several elements. Autistic children may be classified to sub-groups, based on their mineral imbalance profile in hair.

Background: Extracellular magnesium (Mg) accounts for approximately 1% of the total body Mg. Clinically, serum Mg concentration is measured, but it does not necessarily reflect total body Mg status. Although relationships have been reported between reduced Mg and cardiovascular disease in non-dialysis patients, there have been few such studies in hemodialysis patients. It was hypothesized that reduced Mg, as represented by lower Mg concentration in the hair, would be associated with echocardiographic parameters in chronic hemodialysis patients. Methods and Results: Hair Mg concentration was measured in 79 male hemodialysis patients using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and the relationships between hair Mg concentration and echocardiographic parameters were investigated. There was no significant correlation between Mg concentration in the hair and in serum. Hair Mg concentration in the patients with high-left ventricular mass index (LVMI) was significantly lower than that in the low-LVMI patients. Hair Mg concentration correlated significantly and negatively with posterior left ventricular wall thickness, interventricular septum thickness, left ventricular wall thickness (LVWT), and relative wall thickness. Serum Mg concentration, however, did not correlate with any of these echocardiographic parameters. Conclusions: In hemodialysis patients, hair Mg concentration is a biomarker, independent of serum Mg concentration. Hair Mg, but not serum Mg, was significantly and negatively associated with LVWT. Reduced tissue Mg concentration, as measured in the hair, may be associated with left ventricular hypertrophy in hemodialysis patients.  (Circ J 2013; 77: 3029–3036)

Learning from tree-structured data has received increasing interest with the rapid growth of tree-encodable data in the World Wide Web, in biology, and in other areas. Our kernel function measures the similarity between two trees by counting the number of shared sub-patterns called tree q-grams, and runs, in effect, in linear time with respect to the number of tree nodes. We apply our kernel function with a support vector machine (SVM) to classify biological data, the glycans of several blood components. The experimental results show that our kernel function performs as well as one exclusively tailored to glycan properties.
