Wild type phage HK022 was mutagenized by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine to induce clear plaque mutants. A total of 225 clear plaque mutants were isolated and 198 of these were as-signable to one or the other of the two complementation groups of the corresponding cistrons which have been designated as cI and cII, respectively. Approximately 25% of the c mutants were found to be temperature-sensitive (cts); producing turbid plaques at 32 C and clear plaques at 38 C and above. From complementation tests involving cI and cII mutants, bacteria lysogenic for cII prophage were fre-quently obtained. Double lysogens harboring a cI and a cII prophage were infrequently found and single lysogens harboring only a cI prophage have not been recovered. Bacterial lysogens harboring a prophage carrying a cts mutation in the cI cistron were readily obtainable. However, such lysogens show a lethal phenotype at 40 C and above, although they appear to be fully viable at 32 C. It is shown that by incubation of lysogens harboring a cts mutant of the cI cistron at 42 C, it is possible to isolate cryptic lysogens which are non-immune but harbor at least one of the phage sus+ alleles. Genetic data involving cI, cII, and two complementing sus mutants of essential genes are presented. From these data the following vegetative map is deduced: sus4-cII-cI-sus3.

The seasonal variations of the plasma dynamics have been investigated using Mead-Fairfield model. It is shown that shifts in the mirror points and meridional drifts are introduced as a result of the season dependent tilt of the dipole axis with the earth-sun line. Other parameters like radial and azimuthal drifts and the bounce periods are free from seasonal variations. The maximum shift in the mirror points and latitudinal drifts are produced in particles bouncing close to the equator but the former peaks in the mid-night meridian while the latter maximises (in magnitude) in the dawn and dusk sectors. A theoretical estimate has been obtained for the seasonal geomagnetic variation associated with these distortions of the ring current. It is shown that the seasonal variations in the declination can be accounted for if the ring current radius is taken as 7 earth radii.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most widely used therapeutic class in clinical medicine. These are sub-divided based on their selectivity for inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) isoforms (COX-1 and COX-2) into: (1) non-selective (ns-NSAIDs), and (2) selective NSAIDs (s-NSAIDs) with preferential inhibition of COX-2 isozyme. The safety and pathophysiology of NSAIDs on the renal and cardiovascular systems have continued to evolve over the years following short- and long-term treatment in both preclinical models and humans. This review summarizes major learnings on cardiac and renal complications associated with pharmaceutical inhibition of COX-1 and COX-2 with focus on preclinical to clinical translatability of cardio-renal data.

We introduce a novel rainfall estimation algorithm with a random-forest machine-learning method only from Infrared (IR) observations. As training data, we use nine-band brightness temperature (BT) observations obtained from IR radiometers on the third-generation geostationary meteorological satellite (GEO) Himawari-8 and precipitation radar observations from the Global Precipitation Measurement core observatory. The Himawari-8 Rainfall estimation Algorithm (HRA) enables us to estimate rain rate with high spatial and temporal resolution (i.e., 0.04° every 10 min), covering the entire Himawari-8 observation area (i.e., 85°E–155°W, 60°S–60°N) based solely on satellite observations. We conducted a case analysis of the Kanto–Tohoku heavy rainfall event to compare rainfall estimation results of HRA and the near-real-time version of the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP_NRT), which combines global rainfall estimation products with microwave and IR BT observations obtained from satellites. In this case, HRA could estimate heavy rainfall from warm-type precipitating clouds, although GSMaP_NRT could not estimate heavy rainfall when the microwave satellites were unavailable. Further, a statistical analysis showed that the warm-type heavy rain seen in the Asian monsoon region occurred frequently when the BT differences between the 6.9-μm and 7.3-μm of water vapor (WV) bands (ΔT6.9–7.3) were small. Himawari-8 is the first GEO to include the 6.9-μm band which is sensitive to middle-to-upper tropospheric WV. An analysis for the weighting functions of the WV multibands revealed that ΔT6.9–7.3 became small as WV amount in the middle-to-upper troposphere was small and there were optically thick cloud with the cloud top near the middle troposphere. Statistical analyses during boreal summer (August and September 2015 and July 2016) and boreal winter (December 2015 and January and February 2016) indicate that HRA has higher estimation accuracy for heavy rain from warm-type precipitating clouds than a conventional rain estimation method based on only one IR band.

Through immuno-suppression, aflatoxins could affect drug and vaccine efficacy. Such effects have not been evaluated in treatment of many diseases including trypanosomiasis. We assessed the effect of aflatoxin B1 on the efficacy of suramin, the drug used for treatment of early stage sleeping sickness, in a murine model. Mice were fed daily on a diet containing 0.50 mg aflatoxin/kg body weight or a placebo. They were infected with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense on day 7 post-aflatoxin exposure and then treated with one of 6 different doses of suramin (4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5 mg/kg body weight) at the onset of parasitemia. The mice were fed on aflatoxin diet for 30 days and the curative dose values (CD50, 75, and 90) computed and compared using a logistic linear regression model. Aflatoxin B1 induced transient protection of the host against T. b. rhodesiense infection and a consistent increase in suramin CD values in the mice suggesting reduced drug efficacy. Aflatoxicosis hindered curative treatment of T. b. rhodesiense infection in mice, and may contribute to reduced efficacy of suramin during treatment of sleeping sickness in man.

"顔面の各形態的因子と個性との関係を知るために,眉,眼,鼻,□,顔型の各々の官能検査結果を基に,重要と思われる顔の各形態的因子を選出し,顔面の試料を作成した.そしてその試料を用いて,強い-弱い,明るい-暗い,整っている-整っていない,あたたかい-冷たいの4形容詞対についてSD法により官能検査を行い,多変量解析によって両者の関係を検討したところ,次のような結果を得た.1.強い-弱いについては眉角度が最も影響し,次に眼の面積,眼角度の順であり,鼻,□,顔型の影響は少ないという結果であった.2.明るい-暗いについては眼の面積が特に大きく影響するという結果で,次には黒眼径/眼開大経が高い係数を示した.従って三白眼ほど暗いという結果であった.3.整っている-整っていないでは,眼の面積が最も大きく影響し,次には眉角度,鼻幅の順となっている.しかし評価の因子をもつこの形容詞対については,累積寄与率がやや低いことから別の要因も考えられる.4.あたたかい-冷たいについても眼の面積が最も大きく影響するという結果であった.以上の重回帰分析結果より,眼の面積は個性を判断するためにかなり重要な形態的因子であると考えられる.またクラスター分析においては,強い-弱いという形容詞対により大きく3群に分かれていることから,個性を表わすためには重要な形容詞対であると思われる.しかし,これらは平面的な,しかもモデル化した試料を用いているため,今後はこの結果を基に,生体へと発展させ,被服の着装効果との関係を明らかにしていきたいと考えている.終りに,本研究の官能検査の検査者として協力して下さった服飾専攻の学生諸姉に対し深く感謝いたします.なお,本研究は,日本家政学会第32回総会において発表したものである."

高安動脈炎は非特異性血管炎であり、その成因は不明で、我国では難病の1つに指定されている。長年の研究の結果、この血管炎の発生に自己免疫機序の関与が示唆されるが、まだ十分解明されるまでには至っていない。本症は、臨床的にもいくつかの特徴が明らかにされており、(1)若年女性に多発し、(2)アジア諸国に多く、欧米に少ない種属差が知られている。我々は、本症の成因に遺伝要因の関与を想定し、現在までにHLA A24-B52-DR2のhaplotypeが本症患者に有意に高い頻度で出現していることを確認し、この事実がアジア諸国に多発する本症の謎と解きあかす鍵と考えられた。なぜならばB52の高い出現頻度を示しアジア諸国、アメリカインディアン、南米と本症の多発地域とが一致するからである。その後の検索で南米、韓国、インド等に於いても、本症患者にB-5 or B-52が有意に高い頻度を示すことが明らかにされてきている。そこで本症の病態につき国際研究を開始したが、この国際比較に於いていくつかの新しい事態が明らかにされた。その1つは、各国によって男女比が異なることである。我国では、女性が圧倒的に多い事実に対して西方にゆくに従って、その比率が減少し、イスラエル、トルコでほぼ6:4の割合までにゆくことである。もう1つは種属によりその臨床病態が異なり、我国では上行大動脈より大動脈弓部にかけての病変が多いのに対し、インド、タイ、南米(メキシコ、ペル-)ではむしろ腹部大動脈に病変が多いという差が明らかにされた。特にインド等では腹部大動脈に限局した患者もかなり認められた。このことから病態の分類に腹部大動脈の病変のみを含めた新しい体系を国際間で取り決め、この新分類に従った患者の実態を目下明らかにしつつある。このことはHLAの研究に於いても新たな展開を開かしめた。我々の研究に於いてHLA B-39の存在が健康日本人に比し有意に高い統計上の成績が得られたが、実数はわずか10名に満たぬ程であった為に放置しておいたが、そのDNAレベルの研究から、本症患者にのみ認められるB-39-2という新しいタイプの存在が発見された。そしてこのB-39は南米や東南アジア諸国に於いてはB-52より高い出現頻度を示しており、B-39と連鎖不平衡を示す遺伝要因が改めて注目されるようになっている。目下、各国に於いてB-39の出現頻度とその臨床病態との比較が新たなテーマとして取り上げられ、目下検討が成されつつある。このDNAレベルの解析は、各国より送ってもらった血液にて当大学で目下行いつつある。

The three-dimensional topological insulator is a novel state of matter characterized by two-dimensional metallic Dirac states on its surface. To verify the topological nature of the surface states, Bi-based chalcogenides such as Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 and their combined/mixed compounds have been intensively studied. Here, we report the realization of the quantum Hall effect on the surface Dirac states in (Bi1−xSbx)2Te3 films. With electrostatic gate-tuning of the Fermi level in the bulk band gap under magnetic fields, the quantum Hall states with filling factor ±1 are resolved. Furthermore, the appearance of a quantum Hall plateau at filling factor zero reflects a pseudo-spin Hall insulator state when the Fermi level is tuned in between the energy levels of the non-degenerate top and bottom surface Dirac points. We have investigated the current-voltage (I-V) curves of the benzenedithiol (BDT) single molecular junction as a function of stretch length of the junction. The BDT single molecular junction was prepared with the nano fabricated Au electrodes using the mechanically controllable break junction (MCBJ). The conductance of the BDT single molecular junction gradually decreased with the stretching length of the junction. We analyzed the obtained I-V curves based on the two different models; the single channel model and the field emission model. Based on the single channel model, it was revealed that the decrease in conductance was mainly caused by the decreases in the metal-molecule coupling and that the HOMO approached to the Fermi level with the decrease in the electrode separation. The energy shift of the HOMO was supported by the analysis based on the field emission model. [DOI: 10.1380/ejssnt.2018.145]

This paper is important in many ways and is strongly relevant to contemporary policy issues. On the threshold of 21-st Century the Caspian became a hot crossroad in terms of pipelines and the new cargo-transportation routes. The Caspian Basin earned the title of the energy treasure-trove of the twenty-first century. The leading American research centers look at them as an extension of the oil field of Iran and the Middle East in general. Experts of the Nixon Center for Peace and Freedom describes the area between the mouth of the Volga and Oman "The Strategic Energy Ellipse". In addition, the North-South transportation corridor is one of the largest and most strategically important investment projects involving Russia's active participation. This situation is raising extremely important problem for modern Eurasia: perspectives Caspian region in context of development security for pipelines and transit corridors. But these aspects have been largely ignored hitherto. The originality of the proposed study is following. Most international discussion of oil-pipeline and communication politics focus on the macro-politics of the process: the pattern of international relations and alliances that states enter into as part of their development strategy. Such approaches, while necessary of course, tend to overstate the homogeneity and rationality of the state as a political actor. My research will turn attention to the Meso- and Micro-politics of the process: the interregional, domestic and local political and economic maneuvering that accompanies and shapes the drawing up of pipeline projects and their actual construction and operation. So, I'm using "Mega-, Meso- and Micro-region" conceptual framework within which different political forces and incentives is address policy issues. A general context of study-long-term globalization and regionalization in Eurasia. Using this method I suggest an innovative analytical element in my article. Within this approach I'm involving a Global, Regional and Local kinds of political motives regarding the Caspian pipelines at the end 1990-s and the beginning of 21st Century. This levels represents different political interests and egoisms, social expectations and responsibilities. Thus, I scrutinize this political incentives and motives on roulette principle by unfolding all levels: from the Local to the Global. As a result currently there is no single "Great Game" in Caspian area, but a set of "games", which is consists the interests and aspirations of the main geopolitical, regional powers and the local communities as well as business-actors. This analytical approach would suggest a new imaginative perspective to area studies in general which are in blind alley (See "Slavic Research Center News". Annual Newsletter of the Slavic Research Center. Sapporo. Hokkaido University. No.11. December 2003). This paper is base on firsthand materials and studies the policy of the Russian regions along the Caspian area. My paper to date involved personnel interviews, sociological surveys, local press and documents of the Protocol Departments of regional administrations and local self-administered groups. This included interviewing members of the local administrative, representative and business entities (city and regional heads of administration and their deputies and department heads ; chairs of committees of the regional and city assemblies ; and directors and other senior staff of large enterprises) about the coverage of local policymaking, together with the objectives of it and the perceived pressure on it. Today is clear that Caspian region turned into a geopolitical apple of discord where interests of many states clash. Although there are common challenges and common patterns across the whole region such as terrorism, at present the Caspian region does not constitute a unified and homogenous whole.

A 55-year-old Japanese man was hospitalized for palpitations and severe chest oppression one hour after he ingested about 1500 ml of beer and sildenafil (Viagra) 50 mg. At 43 years of age, he had been diagnosed with intermittent WPW syndrome following a paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) attack. He took a 1 mg tablet of doxazosin daily for mild hypertension. On admission, his blood pressure was 90/54 mmHg and his heart beat was weak and irregular with a rate of about 220/min. Since atrial fibrillation (Af) was diagnosed on an electrocardiogram (minimum RR interval; 0.22 seconds), direct current shock was performed with 100 joules and 150 joules but conversion to sinus rhythm failed. Sinus rhythm returned spontaneously from Af four hours after taking sildenafil. Since blood pressure was 50/17 mmHg despite the return to sinus rhythm, blood pressure was maintained by dopamine for twelve hours after sinus rhythm returned. The patient underwent catheter ablation for curative therapy and thereafter has not had any further episodes of tachycardia.
