A 1-year-old spayed female Miniature Schnauzer had chronic hyponatremia, accompanied by polyuria and polydipsia. Blood tests and urinalysis revealed severe hyponatremia, low plasma osmolality with euvolemia, and increased sodium excretion in urine. Hypothyroidism and hypoadrenocorticism were ruled out as causes. These findings led to the diagnosis of syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed dilation of the lateral ventricles, indicating severe hydrocephalus. Tolvaptan, a vasopressin V2 receptor antagonist commonly used in human SIADH, was administered along with water restriction. This treatment resulted in a consistent increase in plasma sodium levels without any adverse effects. This case report represents the first documented evidence of the therapeutic efficacy of tolvaptan in treating SIADH in a dog.

I found out that the majority of them considered their listing as co-authors to be inappropriate. In addition, the majority agreed to the retraction of this paper.These facts raise concerns about the paper. From the standpoint of maintaining the integrity of the research community, I felt that such a paper should be retracted at once.Accordingly, I sent a summary of my concerns about the paper to the corresponding author, Dr. Shin Wakui. I also had an online interview with him to discuss this matter. Various novel properties are being found in one- and two-dimensional nanomaterials, many of which are considered as promising for photonic applications. However, an issue exists in that the optical interaction cross-section is generally too small, owing to their atomic dimensions. Recently, a number of ways have been proposed and demonstrated for combining them with appropriate nanophotonic platforms to induce strong light confinement, thereby increasing the interactions. This may enable us to employ these novel properties in photonic integrated circuits. This article reviews the results of recent research activities on hybrid nanomaterial–nanophotonic platforms. This technology is promising for future photonic integration, in which we will be able to add various photonic functionalities onto passive Si-based photonic integrated circuits by selectively loading functional nanomaterials.

When medaka fish (Oryzias latipes) larvae are grown in the absence of exogenous nutrition, the liver becomes dark and positive to Oil Red O staining from 7 days post-hatch (dph). We determined the mechanism of this starvation-induced development of fatty liver by proteomic analysis using livers obtained from larvae grown in the presence or absence of 2% glucose at 5 dph. Results showed that changes in the expression levels of enzymes involved in glycolysis or the tricarboxylic acid cycle were modest, whereas the expression levels of enzymes involved in amino acid catabolism or β-oxidation of fatty acids were significantly elevated, suggesting that they become major energy sources under starvation conditions. Expression levels of enzymes for the uptake and β-oxidation of fatty acids as well as synthesis of triacylglycerol were elevated, whereas those for the synthesis of cholesterol as well as export of cholesterol and triacylglycerol were decreased under starvation conditions, which explains the accumulation of triacylglycerol in the liver. Our results provide the basis for future research to understand how gene malfunction(s) affects the development of fatty liver, which can lead to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and then to liver cirrhosis.Key words: amino acid catabolism, β-oxidation, triacylglycerol, cholesterol, export

[要旨] 背景: 野球投球時の肩関節まわりの発揮トルク・稼働範囲と肩・肘関節まわりの傷害との関連が示唆されているが, その詳細は明らかではない. 目的: 野球投球動作時の肩関節周りの発揮トルクおよび稼働範囲,また肩関節周りの等尺性最大筋力および静的可動域の傷害発症リスクとの関係を明らかにする. 方法: 大学男子硬式野球部に所属する投手12名を用いて, 投球動作時の肩関節周りの発揮トルク(内旋,水平内転), 稼働範囲(外旋,水平外転)を逆動力学より算出した.また肩関節周りの等尺性最大筋力と静的関節可動域の測定を行った.以上の測定項目と,肩・肘関節まわりの傷害発症リスク指標(肩関節引張力,せん断力,肘関節外反トルク)との関係の評価を行った. なお, 力の要素は球速の2乗で除して標準化したものを評価に用いた結果:投球時の発揮トルクと傷害リスク指標との関係は,肩関節内旋トルクは肘関節内反トルクと有意な正の相関(P<0.001)を,肩関節水平内転トルクは肩関節せん断力と有意な正の相関(P<0.001)を示した投球時の関節稼働範囲と傷害リスク指標との関係は, 投球時の肩関節外旋稼働範囲は肘関節内反トルクと有意な負の関(P<0.05)を,投球時の肩関節水平外転稼働範囲は肩関節せん断力と有意な負の相関(P<0.001)を示した. 投球時の肩関節の発揮トルク(肩関節内旋,水平内転の和)の大きい上位6名の「上半身パワータイプ」は,下位6名の「非上半身パワータイプ」よりも肘関節内反トルクが大きい傾向(P<0.1),肩関節せん断力は有意に高値(P<0.05)であった.結論:肩関節周りの発揮トルクを強く使う投手のほうが,また肩関節周りの稼働範囲が小さい投手のほうが肩・肘回りの傷害発症リスク指標が高くなるという関係が観察された.上肢の発揮トルク主動ではない投法,また肩関節周りの大きな稼働範囲を使った投法が, 肩・肘関節まわりの傷害リスクを軽減するという点において優れることが示唆される. [Abstract] Background: Shoulder joint torque and motion range in baseball throwing are considered to have relation with the risk of shoulder and elbow injury. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation among shoulderjoint torque and motion range in baseball throwing, shoulder isometric muscle force and static motion range, and the risk of shoulder and elbow injury. Method: Twelve baseball pitchers affiliated with the baseball club of the University performed maximum speed ball pitching with motion capture kinematics and kinetics analysis, isometric muscle force tests of shoulder inner rotation, and motion range tests of shoulder external rotation and horizontal abduction. The relation among the kinetic characteristics of throwing, the physical characteristics, and the risk of shoulder and elbow injury was investigated Result: Shoulder inner rotation torque in throwing has strong correlation with elbow inversion torque (P<0.001). Shoulder horizontal adduction torque in throwing has strong correlation with shoulder shear force (P<0.001).Motion range of shoulder external rotation in throwing has correlation with elbow inversion torque (P<0.05). Motion range of shoulder horizontal abduction in throwing has strong correlation with shoulder shear force (P<0.001)."Upper arm power type group" defined as the top six subjects with large upper arm torque (amount of shoulder inner rotation and horizontal adduction) in throwing have larger elbow inversion torque (P<0.1) and larger shear force (P<0.05). Conclusion: These results suggested that throwing motion without strong upper arm torque and with larger shoulder motion range decrease the risk of shoulder and elbow injury in throwing.

The behavior of virtual machine (VM) programs are monitored by virtual machine monitors (VMMs) for security purposes. System calls are frequently used as a monitoring point. To monitor the system calls, the VMM inserts a breakpoint, called a hook point, into the memory of the monitored VM. The hook points are determined based on experimental knowledge. However, reading the source codes of operating systems (OSes) requires specialized knowledge. In addition, the appropriate hook point differs among OSes and OS versions. Analyzing the source code in each OS update is impractical. Searching for the appropriate hook point for various OSes is also difficult. To address these problems, we propose a method for estimating the hook point using a memory analysis technique. The proposed method acquires the memory of the monitored VM and then searches for an appropriate instruction appropriate to hook. The search instructions depend on the processor architecture. In addition, we also proposed a method for searching the appropriate instruction using a single step execution. This version reduces the cost for searching the instructions and improve robustness for various Linux versions. The experimental results showed that the proposed method precisely estimates the hook point for various OS versions and OSes. In addition, the overhead of the proposed method is small, considering the boot time of the monitored VM.

Immunotherapy is a breakthrough in human cancer therapy and has become a major concern in veterinary oncology. However, in cats, many unclear points of the tumor microenvironment exist, including immune checkpoint molecules. A reason is that very few monoclonal antibodies have been proven to react with feline molecules. Therefore, this study investigated whether anti-human programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) monoclonal antibody, clone 28-8, which is currently commercially available, can also recognize feline PD-L1 by flow cytometry, immunoprecipitation, and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. We confirmed that the antibody’s specificity by flow cytometry and immunoprecipitation using NIH3T3 cells transfected with feline PD-L1. Additionally, we revealed that PD-L1 was expressed on the surface of some feline cell lines by flow cytometry and clone 28-8 antibody unbound to the cells where feline PD-L1 was knocked out. Furthermore, IHC analysis revealed that PD-L1 was expressed in macrophages in the spleen and lymph nodes from healthy cats and mast cell tumor cells. Therefore, we indicated that the clone 28-8 antibody is a valuable tool in detecting feline PD-L1, and further analysis of tumor tissues is expected in the future.

Canine lymphoma is the most common cancer in dogs and has a poor prognosis. We recently found that the endocytosis inhibitor dynasore suppresses the viability of human cancer cell lines, especially hematopoietic cancers, by inducing apoptosis. In the present study, we examined the anticancer effects of dynasore on five previously established canine lymphoma cell lines (CLBL-1, Ema, Nody-1, CLC, and GL-1). Dynasore suppressed cell viability in these canine lymphoma cell lines more effectively than in human cancer cell lines. It also induced apoptosis in CLBL-1 and Ema cells but not in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in healthy dogs or in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, suggesting that the ability of dynasore to induce apoptosis is cancer-specific. Furthermore, dynasore induced a DNA damage response in CLBL-1 and Ema cells, suggesting that it acts as a genotoxic agent in canine lymphoma cell lines. These findings suggest that endocytosis inhibitors may provide a new anticancer treatment for canine lymphoma.

Self-incompatibility is the system that inhibits pollen germination and pollen tube growth by self-pollen. This trait is important for the breeding of Brassica and Raphanus species. In these species, self-incompatibility is governed by the S locus, which contains three linked genes (a set called the S haplotype), i.e., S-locus receptor kinase, S-locus cysteine-rich protein/S-locus protein 11, and S-locus glycoprotein. A large number of S haplotypes have been identified in Brassica oleracea, B. rapa, and Raphanus sativus to date, and the nucleotide sequences of their many alleles have also been registered. In this state, it is important to avoid confusion between S haplotypes, i.e., an identical S haplotype with different names and a different S haplotype with an identical S haplotype number. To mitigate this issue, we herein constructed a list of S haplotypes that are easily accessible to the latest nucleotide sequences of S-haplotype genes, together with revisions to and an update of S haplotype information. Furthermore, the histories of the S-haplotype collection in the three species are reviewed, the importance of the collection of S haplotypes as a genetic resource is discussed, and the management of information on S haplotypes is proposed.

Canine lymphoma/leukemia cell lines with p16 protein expressions: high (17-71 and GL-1) and low (CLBL-1, CLC, Nody-1, and UL-1) were treated in vitro with cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) inhibitors, palbociclib or abemaciclib. Cell proliferation decreased as a result, with higher IC50 levels observed in the high p16 (17-71 and GL-1) and one low p16 (UL-1) cell lines compared with the low p16 cells (CLBL-1, CLC, and Nody-1). As expected, palbociclib and abemaciclib treatment reduced pRb phosphorylation in a dose-dependent manner, especially in cells with low p16. These results suggest that CDK4/6 inhibitors have potential as new chemotherapeutic agents for canine lymphoma and high p16 protein expression may be used as a biomarker for resistance to CDK4/6 inhibitor therapy.

We conducted measurements of a butterfly’s motion in forward flight and numerical simulations using a computational model reflecting its motion. We measured the motion of a cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae), and then we constructed a computational model composed of a thorax, an abdomen, and four wings (i.e., left and right wings with fore and hind parts). Furthermore, we calculated the flow field and aerodynamic force and torque generated by the butterfly model using the immersed boundary–lattice Boltzmann method. In this simulation, we considered two types of periodic motions corresponding to slightly-descending and ascending forward flights. As a result, we found that the wing-tip and leading-edge vortices are formed on the wings and then released backward and downward in both flights. The major difference between the two flights is the flapping amplitude, indicating that the butterfly changes the flapping amplitude for each period and increases it to ascend. In addition, we considered a chimera model whose motion is based on the slightly-descending flight but partly given by the ascending flight. As a result, we found that the pitching angle and the angle of attack determine the traveling direction, but simply changing these angles does not achieve the ascending flight due to insufficient lift force. Thus, the butterfly should adjust the flapping and lead–lag angles in response to the pitching angle and the angle of attack to change the flight mode.

In this study, we report a case of catastrophic propeller brain injury with large scalp defect treated with omental flap reconstruction.A 62-year-old man was accidentally caught in a powered paraglider propeller during maintenance. The rotor blades impacted the left part of his head. On arrival at the hospital, he presented with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of E4V1M4. On some areas on his head, skin was noticeably cut off, and the brain tissue out-slipped through an open skull fracture. Continuous bleeding from the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) and the brain surface was observed during emergency surgery. Massive bleeding from the SSS was controlled using a number of tenting sutures and hemostatic agents. We evacuated the crushed brain tissue and coagulated the severed middle cerebral arteries. Dural plasty using the deep fascia of the thigh was performed. The skin defect was closed using an artificial dermis. The administration of high-dose antibiotics has failed to prevent meningitis. Moreover, the severed skin edges and fasciae were necrotic. Plastic surgeons performed debridement and vacuum-assisted closure therapy to promote wound healing. Follow-up head computed tomography revealed hydrocephalus. Lumbar drainage was performed; however, sinking skin flap syndrome was observed. After removing the lumbar drainage, cerebrospinal fluid leakage occurred. We then performed cranioplasty with a titanium mesh and omental flap on day 31. After the surgery, perfect wound healing and infection control were achieved; however, severe disturbance of consciousness remained. The patient was transferred to a nursing home. Primary hemostasis and infection control are mandatory. An omental flap has been determined to be effective in controlling infection by covering the exposed brain tissue.

本論では、ブラム・ストーカー(1847-1912)の初期の小説作品である『蛇峠』(1890)、『ドラキュラ』(1897)、『海の神秘』(1902)における風景描写と、登場人物たちが利用する交通機関との関係性を扱う。鉄道の登場とその速度、および一九世紀半ばのイギリス本土における鉄道網の確立と旅行の大衆化は、ヴィクトリア時代の人々の視覚に重大な変容をもたらし、風景を見る者から隔絶した次々と移り変わる「パノラマ」として捉える感覚を、人々に遍く実装させるに至った。ストーカーの三作品はどれも旅行者を主人公としており、それらの作品における風景描写は、風景とそれをまなさす者との間の断絶と、その断絶を生み出した列車の速度の影響をはっきりと表象している。テクノロジーの発展と人間の知覚の変容との関係性を記録したメディアとして、ストーカーの小説を読み込んでゆくこと。それが本論で試みられているプラクシスである。

Lack of evidence prevents an understanding of how ghost crabs create burrows underground. For the reconstruction of ichnogenetic stages in the burrows of ghost crabs, we report on how the burrows of the ghost crab Ocypode stimpsoni from the foreshore and backshore on Ikarashi beach, Niigata, Japan are created. Plaster casting of the burrows reveals detailed morphology with bioglyphs on the burrow wall. The casts of burrows show a variety of morphologies, such as J- and Y-shapes. Based on the burrow ichnogeny, J-shaped burrows were well constructed at a shallower level of the waterline underneath the beach, occasionally creating a second opening of the burrow. In turn, Y-shaped burrows were constructed at a deeper waterline, thereby recycling and reburrowing the deepest part of the J-shaped burrow. As a result, the total depth of Y-shaped burrows tends to be larger than that of J-shaped burrows. The depth and mean diameter of the burrows range from 3.3–37.6 cm and 9.28–31.54 mm, respectively, and the depths are apparently shorter than those on a Pacific beach. The lines of evidence suggest that the morphological features of burrows in Ikarashi beach are attributed to a smaller difference in tidal level in the Sea of Japan, where the available space for burrows ought to be limited by the waterline under the ground.

The turnabout of air temperature anomalies over East Asia between the first and second halves of winter 2020/21 was examined from a teleconnection perspective with regionally different convective heating anomalies over the Indo-western Pacific sector. In the first half of winter 2020/21, the air temperature over East Asia was lower than normal, accompanied by a pair of anticyclonic and cyclonic anomalies in the upper troposphere southeast of the Tibetan Plateau and north of Japan, respectively. This dipole pattern is newly referred to as Southeast Asia–Japan (SAJ) pattern in this study, indicating the propagation of Rossby waves caused by enhanced tropical convection over the eastern Indian Ocean toward the South China Sea. In the second half of winter 2020/21, the enhanced convection shifted eastward to the Philippine Sea. The subsequent anticyclonic anomaly changed its position to the south of Japan, which was similar to the western Pacific (WP)-like teleconnection pattern, causing warmer conditions over East Asia. The composite analysis indicated that the anomalous anticyclone over the southeastern Tibetan Plateau corresponding to the SAJ pattern emerged simultaneously with intensification of convection over the South China Sea. Half of the cases of the WP-like pattern have been accompanied by enhanced convection over the Philippine Sea. The different circulation patterns were reproduced by prescribing the heat source over the South China Sea and Philippine Sea to the linear baroclinic model. Moreover, the vorticity budget analysis suggested that the presence of upper-tropospheric convergence of winds to the southeast of the Tibetan Plateau seen in the climatology is conceivable for the in situ localized anomalous circulation constituting the SAJ pattern due to vortex stretching effects.

Cyanotoxins produced by blue-green algae in lakes are among the most serious threats to water quality worldwide. As global warming rapidly extends the locations and timing of blue-green algae blooms, a simple and accessible method for the detection and quantification of cyanotoxins in fresh water is increasingly necessary. Here, a quick, simple and accessible simultaneous analytical method for five cyanotoxins (cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a, microcystin-RR, YR and LR) is reported. This method has three advantages. First, it does not require complicated operations, such as a concentration operation. Second, it employs an HPLC column without high pressure. Third, the use of stable isotope-labeled surrogates enables correct identification and precise quantification of cyanotoxins. The method was applied to the lakes of Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan, and four of the five above-named cyanotoxins (i.e., all but cylindrospermopsin) were detected. The limits of quantification were 20–43 ng/L, which were considerably lower than the WHO guideline values. The recovery levels were 97–104%. Microbial flora analysis revealed that the sources of anatoxin-a were Pseudanabaena limnetica and Cuspidothrix issatschenkoi, and the source of microcystins was the group A1 of Microcystis aeruginosa. This study provides a quick, easy and accessible method for the worldwide monitoring of cyanotoxin levels.
